Chapter Index

“Seeing how shocked you are, I clearly guessed right.”

“Qiu, how… did you guess? This… it’s simply impossible.” Gilt felt a chill in his heart.

How did this Easterner guess such a secret matter?

Seeing Gilt’s changing expressions and his deep contemplations, Du Qiu smiled and said: “I’m a hacker, and I planted a small program into the casino network…”

“I see now, the roulette bets you won twice must have been with the help of your program,” Gilt cut in hurriedly.

“Gilt, you really are clever. If you can’t cheat, going to a casino is basically just giving away money.”

“Was it your program that found… artificial intelligence?” When Gilt reached the end of his question, his voice suddenly became lower and at the same time, he looked around cautiously.

“Why are you so nervous?” Du Qiu asked curiously. “You should be excited if artificial intelligence is willing to help you.”

Gilt shook his head and said: “You’re mistaken. If it truly is artificial intelligence, I’ll be the first target it wants to deal with.”

“Why? Has this artificial intelligence escaped human control?”

“I can’t be certain right now.”

“Why can’t you be sure? Isn’t it helping you win money? Well, it’s helping you for some reason, could it be that you created it?”

Gilt looked at Du Qiu in astonishment again, saying, “Can you… read minds? How can you guess my affairs so accurately?”

“Wow, you really wrote an artificial intelligence program, then you might become the greatest programmer in the world,” Du Qiu exclaimed in admiration.

Du Qiu spoke from the heart.

He himself had created the artificial intelligence Star Ocean, but it was a transformation from a Custodian intelligence program, not his original creation.

Moreover, to get this artificial intelligence program to run, he had to copy a whole new hardware system.

Even so, the hardware level just barely met the requirements.

But now, this person named Gilt, had somehow written a strong artificial intelligence that operates on existing computer hardware.

Although, according to Star Ocean, this artificial intelligence was just barely reaching the level of strong AI and had many shortcomings.

In other words, this AI had just begun to develop a sense of self-awareness and it needed time to grow, or maybe it needed hardware support.

Gilt waved his hands in denial, “No, no, no, it wasn’t written by me alone. I just wrote its most basic core algorithm, which was an algorithm I created myself.”

“Oh? What kind of algorithm is it?” Du Qiu was even more interested.

“I call it the Evolutionary Algorithm,” Gilt said, and surprisingly used the Tang language when he mentioned the word ‘Evolutionary’.

“Evolutionary Algorithm? Interesting, you even used our Tang language vocabulary to name it,” Du Qiu became even more curious.

Gilt’s complexion suddenly turned somewhat unsightly, “Qiu, thanks for saving me tonight. I must be going now.”

“Hey, I was just about to discuss the Evolutionary Algorithm with you. Do you have contact information? Online is fine too,” Du Qiu said, somewhat regretfully.

“I must go back now. If I’m out past ten o’clock, I may never be able to leave again. Moreover, the place I’m in doesn’t have internet access.”

Du Qiu became even more curious, Gilt seemed to have escaped from somewhere but it appeared he could only leave on schedule, almost like a prisoner out for air who had to return at a set time.

“What will happen if you don’t go back?” Du Qiu blurted out.

“That’s not possible, if I don’t go back, my family will be harmed,” after saying this, Gilt turned to leave, but Du Qiu grabbed him.

“Wait a moment, I’ll leave a website address for you. If you can get online, you can visit this website and leave me a message.”

As he spoke, Du Qiu took out a pen he carried with him, picked up a piece of scrap newspaper from the side of the road, tore off a strip, wrote down a website address, and gave it to Gilt.

“Gilt, being able to write the underlying Evolutionary Algorithm for artificial intelligence, you’re definitely a genius. Maybe we will have a chance to meet again in the future, and I hope we can collaborate then.”

Although Du Qiu didn’t get to learn about Gilt’s Evolutionary Algorithm, just from the term alone, he knew it wouldn’t be simple.

With that algorithm as the core foundation, a nearly strong AI was created; such an algorithm was definitely of immense value.

“Qiu, your ability to hack into the firewall created by K also shows you’re a software expert. But we’re short on time tonight, let’s meet another day.”

Gilt pocketed the note. Waving to Du Qiu, he then hurriedly left.

The voice of Star Ocean sounded in Du Qiu’s ears, “Sir, I just checked. There is no information about Gilt online, not even in the United States’ identity system. Gilt does not exist.”

“En? Is he undocumented?” Du Qiu was a bit shocked.

How could such a software genius be undocumented?

Considering what he had said, maybe he was controlled by some force using his relatives as hostages because he was undocumented.

“Not sure, I can’t find any information, so I can’t determine if he’s undocumented. Also, Gilt doesn’t have a cell phone, so I can’t track his location.”

“You can access those satellite systems, can’t you monitor his whereabouts?”

“I can follow him for now, but without a positioning mark, I could easily lose the target.”

    “Where is he heading now?”

“He just got in a car. Okay, I can track the GPS signal of the car. The car is now heading northwest out of the city, it looks like it’s leaving the city.”

“Then keep an eye on it. If you find out where he’s headed, it’ll be easier to find him in the future.”

    “Understood, Sir.”

Du Qiu talked with Star Ocean while walking back to the hotel where he was staying.

Before returning to the hotel, Du Qiu found a quiet place without cameras to remove his face mask.

Then he leisurely walked into the hotel.

It was then that he noticed many people in the hotel lobby, many of them carrying cameras, which made them look like journalists.

Du Qiu glanced over and realized that these people were probably all interviewing one person.

Then he smiled, quickly walked around them, and headed to the elevator.

The one being interviewed turned out to be the marketing department supervisor, Zhang Wenliang. He was fluently introducing “Xiaobai” in English, answering the journalists’ questions.

Du Qiu was a bit puzzled – didn’t Zhang Wenliang hold a press conference just before the exhibition closed today? Why were there still so many journalists wanting to interview?

He took the elevator to his floor, and right as he got out, he ran into Lin Siyu.

“Director Du, you’re back. Zhang Wenliang is downstairs entertaining journalists. I was just about to go help him, thinking about renting a temporary meeting room from the hotel. It’s not quite proper to block their lobby.”

“Weren’t they already provided with a press conference this afternoon?”

“Ah, these are the ones who learned about it later. They started to gather after they had dinner, and after a discussion with me, Zhang Wenliang went down to face the media crowd.”

“Then you’d better hurry down and give a hand.”

“Ah, Director Du, considering how things are going, our booth is definitely going to be swamped tomorrow. When will the security personnel you hired arrive? I’m worried something might happen.”

Du Qiu was startled. To make things more convenient for himself, he had not let the security personnel he had hired come over.

Now that everything was settled, considering tonight’s event, Gilt probably wouldn’t go back to the casino, and the artificial intelligence might have been spooked and wouldn’t dare to show up again.

Thinking about Lin Siyu’s worries, Du Qiu nodded, “Alright, I’ll have them send people to the exhibition booth tomorrow morning to meet with you. They’re from Green Field Security.”

“Okay, Director Du.” Lin Siyu agreed and then asked, “Won’t you meet with the journalists?”

“No need, you guys handle it.”

With that, Du Qiu walked towards his room.

Lin Siyu sighed softly as she watched Du Qiu’s retreating figure. The boss truly was a typical engineer, showing little interest in fame or interviews with the press.

Thinking about how Zhang Wenliang was still fighting the battle alone, she pressed the elevator button and hurriedly went downstairs to help.

Du Qiu got back to his room, called the contact at Green Field Security, and asked them to send six security personnel to the hotel tomorrow to meet with Lin Siyu and follow her arrangements.

After the call, he checked the time and saw it was already past nine in the evening. He decided to take a quick shower.

When he first arrived in the United States the previous night, he had tested and confirmed that the crystal pillow was still effective there, and he could only connect to it at night.

Back in Tang Country on the other half of Blue Star, it was daytime.

There must be a mystery to this.

But he didn’t have time to delve into it tonight since he needed to continue his journey through the dreamland, learning from the vast database of the Custodian.

Didn’t you guys like this segment? Why did so many people drop out yesterday? It feels quite disheartening! The burning zeal felt like it got doused with a bucket of cold water emmmm…
