Chapter Index

Du Qiu had seen many beautiful women, and both of his ex-girlfriends were above average in looks.

However, the woman who rushed out of the elevator in front of him he thought was the prettiest.

The woman, upon seeing the bloodstains on Du Qiu, immediately tensed with anxiety and nervously asked, “Du Qiu, have you been injured? Where did you get hurt?”

As she spoke, she reached out to inspect his wounds.

From being awestruck to confused and then snapping back to reality, Du Qiu quickly called out, “Who…who are you? Stop touching randomly!”

While they spoke, more people had already rushed out of the elevator.

They quickly handcuffed that fake woman, and rapidly took her away.

“You’re not injured?” The beautiful woman had stepped back several paces when Du Qiu yelled out, and her face and neck were slightly flushed.

The woman in front of Du Qiu had short hair, a melon-seed-shaped face, delicate and pretty features, wheat-colored skin that was enviable, and eyes that were like deep pools, tempting one to explore further.

“I’m not injured. The blood on me is from that fake woman.”

After Du Qiu responded, he asked tentatively, “Are… are you with the Criminal Police Brigade? How come I’ve never seen you before?”

The woman’s face regained its calm, the tension and anxiety from when she exited the elevator gone.

“Let me introduce myself. My name is Ning Shuangshuang, and I am in charge of this case.”

Du Qiu immediately shook the hand the woman extended.

It was silky yet a bit rough and prickly to the touch.

“Officer Ning, hello. What’s the situation with the case?”

Du Qiu let go of her hand, feeling a bit surprised by the roughness.

Ning Shuangshuang did not answer Du Qiu’s question but instead looked toward the wide-open door of Du Qiu’s home and asked, “Did you lose anything at home?”

Du Qiu then realized his front door was still open.

“There’s nothing missing. I had just opened the door when that fake woman burst out, then she attacked me, and I fought back. By the way, that counts as self-defense, right?”

Ning Shuangshuang looked at the door and asked, deliberately not answering his question, “May I take a look inside your house?”

“Oh, how rude of me. Please come in. No need to change your shoes.”

Du Qiu led Ning Shuangshuang inside.

Ning Shuangshuang glanced around the living room and the dining room and asked, “Do you live alone?”

“Yes, this is the house my grandparents left me.”

“May I take a look around? Oh, it’s just routine procedure to check if the thief entered the room.”

“Go ahead, I know the drill. I’ll go wash up.”

Du Qiu entered the bathroom, took off his bloodstained jacket, washed his face and hands, and made sure there were no bloodstains left on him before stepping out.

Then, Du Qiu saw Ning Shuangshuang standing with her back to him, looking at a family photo on the corner cabinet in the living room.

    “That’s a family portrait I took when I was 12.”

After Du Qiu spoke, he suddenly felt a bit uncomfortable and turned to pour some water.

Carrying a glass of water, he returned and offered it to Ning Shuangshuang, “Officer Ning, please have some water.”

Ning Shuangshuang turned around, took the glass, and said, “Thank you.”

But Du Qiu noticed that her eyes were slightly red, as if she had cried.

This female police officer is a bit strange.

She didn’t tell me which unit she belonged to and didn’t discuss the case details.

She wanted to touch me as soon as she got out of the elevator, and now she’s shedding tears looking at my family’s photo.

I’ve never heard of any lost sisters, and I am the sole heir of the Du family.

“Officer Ning, what exactly is this case about?”

“Oh, it’s not clear at this moment. We need to interrogate the criminal first to understand the whole story,” Ning Shuangshuang replied, then seemed to remember something and asked, “Were you involved in a car accident on Tianshan Road the night before last?”

“Yes, there was a criminal being chased by the police, and they nearly crashed into my car. Fortunately, I braked in time.”

Du Qiu paused, then began to assess Ning Shuangshuang with a new interest.

“Were you there that night? Were those policemen your subordinates?”

Ning Shuangshuang frowned and asked, “Did you see me?”

“Oh, I saw a silhouette in the rearview mirror. If you hadn’t mentioned it, I wouldn’t have remembered,” Du Qiu replied.

“Can you tell me why you were there at that time?”

Startled, Du Qiu said, “My ex-girlfriend called me for help. She said someone was following her, so I rushed over. The place of the accident was not far from her apartment.”

    “Ex-girlfriend?” Ning Shuangshuang repeated softly.

Suddenly she reached out and said, “Give me your phone.”

Du Qiu, puzzled, unlocked his phone and handed it over.

Ning Shuangshuang took the phone and started fiddling with it for a while before handing it back to Du Qiu.

“I’ve left my phone number with you and added you on WeChat. If anything unusual or strange happens in the near future, please report to me immediately.”

Du Qiu took back his phone and nodded, “Sure, it’s certainly better to be able to ask for your help directly. It’s been somewhat embarrassing always bothering Officer Su.”

Ning Shuangshuang’s eyes flickered, and she said, “I think you’ve never felt embarrassed asking him.”

“Oh…” Du Qiu scratched his head, “Actually, it’s mainly because Officer Su often asks me to help out as an adjunct, and I’ve gotten used to consulting him after doing it voluntarily for so long. Oh, are you familiar with Officer Su?”

“Not really, don’t worry. Whatever bad things you say about him, I definitely won’t tell him.”

Du Qiu was taken aback, not having said anything yet.

“Officer Su and I go way back, we’re old buddies; nothing is off the table.”

Ning Shuangshuang set the glass on the coffee table and then said, “Thank you for helping us catch another criminal today.”

“No problem, it’s expected. The criminal targeted me, helping the police is a citizen’s duty, after all.”

    “Good, I’ll be leaving then.”

    “Take care.”

Standing in front of the elevator, Du Qiu waved as Ning Shuangshuang entered the lift.

“Du Qiu, remember to report any unusual incidents to me every day.”

The elevator door closed, leaving only the sound of Ning Shuangshuang’s pleasant voice echoing in Du Qiu’s ears.

What does it mean? Report every day? What kind of case is this?

    Du Qiu was utterly bewildered.

At the entrance of the apartment building, Ning Shuangshuang encountered a middle-aged police officer with an anxious expression.

Upon seeing Ning Shuangshuang, he immediately asked, “Team Leader Ning, is Xiao Qiu alright?”

“Don’t worry, Chief Tang. He’s skilled. He subdued that guy.”

“That’s good.” Police Chief Tang breathed a sigh of relief and then asked, “How come these people are targeting Xiao Qiu?”

Ning Shuangshuang replied, “The criminal we caught the night before last has not confessed until now. Today’s individual also looked fierce, truly worthy of someone from ‘Wolf’s Kiss.’

We originally thought they were aiming for Qin Yun and the shipyard, but now it seems that we might have judged incorrectly. We need to wait for the interrogation results to understand the situation better.”

“Then… are Xiao Qiu and the others still in danger?”

“It’s not clear if there are any remaining members of their group, but I’ve arranged for 24-hour surveillance.”

“That’s good. Du Qiu is the only hope for the Du family. If anything were to happen to him, I wouldn’t be able to face my teacher down below,” Chief Tang said, relieved.

“I’ve left my contact information with him. He will notify me if there’s any trouble.”

“Okay, if anything comes up that needs the police’s assistance, just let us know.”
