Chapter Index

The wind whimpered mournfully as Yenir silently watched Wang Tian’s hurried departure, his face expressionless.

Next, he was about to do something that, since his rebirth, had little to do with the apocalypse.

If possible, he wasn’t going to waste his time and energy on this.

But before the catastrophe fully erupted, his greatest obstacle wasn’t the monsters, high-level mutants, or even hordes of corpses.

    It was…

    People.

The cruelty of men—relentless and unforgiving.

    …………

“Yenir, are you alright?! Do you need me?”

In an office in the Capital Zone, Zhao Long stared with a hint of shock at the private message from Yenir, immediately asking with concern.

After all, the notorious Yenir was someone he had been specially told to watch over—a dear friend.

Of course, he was no longer really in a position to ‘take care’ of Yenir.

“Uncle Zhao, do you know who is targeting me in the East Sea this time?”

“I need to know who opposes me.”

Yenir asked calmly, already preparing to note down the names.

Although Zhao Long’s rank wasn’t high, he was indispensable in Yenir’s current world—in fact, even outside these circles he played a pivotal role.

Years of accumulated intel and connections meant he always knew something. Otherwise, Chen Kailai wouldn’t have arranged for him to manage Yenir’s life in the Capital.

Reading Yenir’s message, Zhao Long’s heart skipped a beat as a strange glimmer flashed in his eyes.

What did Yenir mean by asking in that manner?

After a brief hesitation, he couldn’t help but counter:

“Yenir, is something wrong? Do you think someone in the Military is after you?”

“Actually, no… Your actions this time really caught us off guard.”

Zhao Long gave a bitter chuckle. As a member of the Military, he couldn’t stop himself from defending them.

Yet, almost immediately, Yenir’s message came through again.

“Uncle Zhao, tell me—I need your help.”

“I’ve already checked with Zhao Hongtu’s side; initially it was Lu Tianming who started it against me, wasn’t it?”

    “Who else followed?”

Unable to see Yenir’s expression, Zhao Long froze for a moment, picturing the look of disappointment in his eyes.

Does this kid really want to know who resents him?

    Indeed…

It’s hard not to feel the sting when, despite being right about the looming disaster, you’re met with distrust.

If Zhao Hongtu’s been interrogated already, then there’s nothing left to hide.

After a brief pause, Zhao Long, thinking little of it, reluctantly sent further details:

“There’s also Wang Chu—Wang Kai’s father, the man who once competed with you in the lineup. He’s from the logistics department.”

“Committee Member Lu’s against you mainly because his department has always been at odds with the Special Operations Group, which has led to some ‘grudges’ against you.”

“Their circle is tight-knit. Besides them, there might also be some conservatives, like General Wang Shouren…”

“They’re sensitive about certain matters… it isn’t that they’re deliberately targeting you.”

Word by word, Zhao Long carefully crafted his message, inwardly sighing at the turn of events.

Wherever there are people, there are struggles. As Yenir was exalted by one faction, he naturally became a thorn in another’s side. Perhaps restrained by orders from above, they wouldn’t go too far—but by the rules, Yenir was caught in a vortex.

As long as he remained in the Capital, attacks and slander were inevitable.

Especially since Yenir was so conspicuous and aggressive—it had deeply irked some of the ‘old-timers.’

    “Alright.”

After noting the names, Yenir replied succinctly.

Two individuals with the surname Wang plus Lu Tianming?

In truth, he didn’t recall ever hearing these names; it seemed they had died before he commanded the Military in his previous life.

    So in this lifetime…

Just as Yenir nodded slightly, about to end the call, Zhao Long, as if suddenly remembering something, hesitated and spoke:

    “Yenir…”

“Your little sister and your mother…”

    “They…”

Yenir’s expression darkened instantly. His usually unflappable heart skipped a beat.

    “What happened to them?!”

A rare surge of emotion—his only beloved family, Little Sister and his mother, were his Achilles’ heel. Anyone who touched them was finished!

Even without seeing Yenir’s sudden barrage, Zhao Long gave a bitter chuckle and finally, hesitantly replied:

    “They’re in the Hospital now.”

    “Of course! It’s nothing serious—just a scare.”

“Apparently, before you returned, the Military might have mistakenly thought you were in trouble, and then some people…”

    ……..

A minute later, Yenir gripped his Elemental Blade tightly, his eyes turning icy as he gazed toward the distant horizon.

    “Lu Tianming…!!”

Earlier, when he had decided to deal with the parasites, he felt little emotion—let alone anger.

But now, an overwhelming, chilling killing intent exploded from within him.

He never expected that while he was fighting for his life in the dungeon, the ‘opposition’ behind him would not only seize the rest of his supplies but also intimidate Little Sister by saying she was dead!

He could only shudder at the thought of the despair Little Sister and his mother must have felt upon hearing the news a few days ago.

Both were ordinary people, not Awakeners. Naturally, they couldn’t use the system’s communication. Ye Xiaoan knew he was on a mission and wisely didn’t disturb him! And while he was busy with matters over the East Sea, he subconsciously overlooked their situation!

He had even planned to surprise them!

He had originally thought that by settling them in the Capital, the Military would undoubtedly protect them.

    But who would have thought…

Moments later, Yenir slowly levitated off the ground; his original plan was utterly scrapped.

    “You should never…”

    “lay a hand on them…”

Holding back the urge to storm back to the Capital and execute everyone, Yenir clutched his Elemental Blade tightly as a brand-new plan began to form.

If he had initially intended to eliminate a few parasites, now he wouldn’t spare anyone.

He could understand the Military’s suspicion and mistrust—after all, times had changed and too many meddlesome individuals were involved. Strictly speaking, the Military had cooperated later on, simply unwilling to bear losses; such is human nature.

    Therefore…

Killing Fang Teng alone was serious enough. He couldn’t risk striking at the true high-ups.

At least not before reaching Peak Third-Stage—there were people he simply couldn’t kill.

The lower-level parasites meant nothing; these were merely subordinate managers in the Battle Zone. Their sensitivity over casualties was nothing compared to that of the true high command—they even had the nerve to warn those idiots to count their remaining heads.

    But at this moment…

Those worthless scum? If they dare steal from him, they’d pay with their lives!

Suppressing his murderous intent, Yenir dialed the communication number Zhao Long had given him.

It belonged to an Awakener, assigned by the Military to care for Ye Xiaoan in the Hospital.

Yes, after his triumphant return, the tardy Military had scrambled, as if trying to make up for their mistake, and hastily sent someone over…

After all, as long as someone’s alive, they weren’t seen as a major issue.

A few seconds later, the call connected and a startled, anxious female voice burst through.

    …..

Capital Military District, First Guard Hospital.

In a white Hospital Room, Ye Xiaoan sat silently hugging her knees.

Her vacant eyes stared at the white walls like that of a forsaken creature.

Rapid footsteps echoed outside the room.

A short-haired female soldier in uniform rushed in from the guards at the doorway, her face a mix of surprise and unease as she looked at the girl on the bed.

    “Xiaoan!”

    “Your brother sent a message!”

    Her heart pounded wildly.

As the soldier called out, both Ye Xiaoan in bed and the soldiers outside turned their eyes in unison toward the tablet she quickly retrieved.

Meanwhile, at the far end of the corridor, a three-star general assigned by the Military to specifically guard Ye Xiaoan felt his heart skip a beat.

Yenir… has he found out about this?!

Wasn’t he busy commanding the battles over the East Sea? How could he suddenly contact his family?!

    The atmosphere immediately turned solemn.

It was no wonder everyone was on edge.

In fact, after Yenir emerged from the dungeon, the Military suddenly realized not only had he survived, but he had achieved such great feats. Their earlier oversight was undoubtedly a grave dereliction of duty.

    Waving his arms wildly.

A Military general who had rushed over to the soldier said in a measured tone, as the satellite transfer hadn’t yet begun, every word deliberate:

“You must thoroughly explain what happened!”

“We cannot let Committee Member Yenir misunderstand us!”
