Chapter Index

    Back from the lab.

Lin Yu used his clearance to pull up Su He’s full records, all the way from childhood.

It didn’t take long for something odd to jump out.

See, Su He had applied for the Fleet Command Department at Mars Advanced Military Academy, and with her top-tier grades, nothing should have stood in her way.

But in the end, what happened was nothing short of bizarre.

The file showed that Su He did get into Mars Advanced Military Academy, but not the Fleet Command Department—instead, she landed in the Flight Department.

Pilots for spacefighters, mechs and even warships all came from that department.

Sure, it was a popular field, but compared to Fleet Command, its future prospects just didn’t measure up.

Each year, the Fleet Command Department at Mars Advanced Military Academy only accepted around seventy to eighty students.

    What about the Flight Department?

    A whopping three thousand spots!

Of course, the Federation had nine top military academies. Mars’s was even called the Federation’s First Advanced Military Academy, and if you added all nine together, you’d get about five hundred Fleet Command students a year. The Flight Department? Almost ten thousand.

Still, based on Su He’s credentials and her performance at the time—

There was zero doubt she qualified for Fleet Command. She’d applied for it, too.

So how on earth did she end up in Flight Department instead?

Lin Yu could see something was off in the records, but the real reason—

Only the person herself could say.

    ——

    Two hours later.

    The last soldier woke.

    The official testing finally began.

And after a whole string of tests, the data from Su He left everyone stunned.

First off, as Lin Yun had said, the higher a person’s innate brain development, the better their efficiency using the Gene Enhancer—and the final results would always be the best.

You could see the difference clear as day by looking at everyone’s data before and after the enhancement.

For example, the three with innate brain development above 19 but under 20 percent—they saw increases of six to seven times in stats like strength, speed, endurance and reflexes.

The six who broke 20 percent saw gains between eight and ten times.

Their ultimate rank depended completely on how high their innate brain development was.

And last was Su He—the exception.

She’d jumped an unbelievable fifteenfold. It was absolutely wild.

As for how their acquired brain development would improve, since that happens over time instead of all at once, they’d have to keep watching for a while.

But at least for the first batch of ten, nothing unexpected had happened.

Lin Yun turned to Lin Yu.

    He gave a small nod.

“No problem. I approve testing the next batch of one hundred.”

According to the plan, there would be three rounds of Gene Enhancement tests: first ten people, then one hundred and finally a thousand.

The next round couldn’t start unless the previous batch had a perfect success rate. Even one mishap would halt the entire experiment on the spot.

    “Yes!”

As soon as Lin Yu agreed, Lin Yun jumped up in delight.

All that stern, scientific seriousness was nowhere to be found.

    ——

    Ten minutes later.

Su He was brought to a small side room next to the lab.

Two soldiers motioned for her to go in.

Still looking completely lost, she glanced uncertainly at the two soldiers—armed to the teeth, standing motionless like guardians—then nervously pushed open the door.

She understood: if they’re posting heavy orbital paratroopers as guards, whatever’s inside must not be simple.

But even knowing that, she froze the second she walked through the door.

Snapping to attention, she raised her hand in a crisp salute.

    “Commander!”

    “Mm. Close the door.”

    “Yes, sir!”

She pivoted and closed the door, then turned smartly again.

It was like a textbook drill—every movement sharp as if she were in basic training.

    “Relax. Take a seat.”

Lin Yu gestured to the chair across from him.

Su He answered with a quick ‘Yes’ and sat where he’d indicated.

Technically she was sitting, but her posture stayed ramrod straight. Lin Yu didn’t press—he’d been the same way, once.

“Do you know why I called you in today?”

    “No, Commander!”

“Let me jog your memory then. Five years ago, when you took the innate brain development test—what was your result?”

    “Uh…”

Su He’s heart skipped a beat.

    Is this…

Has that thing from back then been discovered?

    “What’s wrong? Can’t say?”

    “It was 18.5%, Commander!”

“Did you know? Now, with the latest technology, we can not only measure your acquired brain development—we can even check your innate value, no matter how many decades have passed.”

Lin Yu’s words left Su He completely stunned.

Just two hours ago—right after she’d woken up—she’d been hooked up to every instrument under the sun by those scientists in white coats.

Could one of those machines have actually tested her brain development level?

Honestly, Su He had thought about this before joining the experiment, but she hadn’t really cared.

After all, she was already twenty-three. Even if she scored a twenty-one or twenty-two, so what?

At best, people would think she was an oddball whose brain kept developing years after age eighteen.

Rare, sure, but Federation history had a few cases—some people gained an extra year’s worth, maybe two, of brain development past adulthood.

But if this new tech really could confirm her innate brain state at eighteen, that would be a huge problem.

She almost regretted ever volunteering for this trial.

If that secret from back then got out—

“From your look, you seem a little afraid of being found out.”

“So maybe things aren’t exactly like I first thought.”

Every tiny shift in Su He’s expression over these past few seconds didn’t slip past Lin Yu.

It was like his brain ran calculations on everything she did.

And in the end, his analysis lined up exactly with what he’d just said.

    “Take a look for yourself…”

Without wasting words, Lin Yu pulled up her test report and flicked it across the holo-display so she could see.

The next second—after just a single glance—Su He froze, speechless.

It was right there: her acquired brain development was now 27.5%. As for her innate stat—

    An unbelievable 26.8%.

Did that make her the first theoretical ‘superhuman’ in human history?

With credentials like that, did she really need to make whatever deal she did back then?

    There was absolutely no need!

So, back then, what on earth…

How could she have done something so incredibly foolish?

    Chapter Summary

Lin Yu investigates Su He's history and uncovers a puzzling switch in her academy records—from the prestigious Fleet Command Department to the less competitive Flight Department, despite her outstanding qualifications. As genetic enhancement experiments progress, Su He stuns everyone with unprecedented results, revealing her as a theoretical superhuman. Summoned by Lin Yu, Su He is confronted with the truth of her test results and is left reeling, questioning the choices that led her here and the secret she kept hidden all these years.
