Chapter 93: Unexpected Discussions in the War Room
by xennovelEven though all the warships had their radar, engines and weapons back online, things still weren’t looking good for the Qiongxiao.
After some adjustments the fleet resumed its course.
But Science Officer Luo Xin couldn’t help feeling anxious about the Qiongxiao.
Her main worry was that the meteorite hit had landed dangerously close to the main engine.
Although it hadn’t been a direct blow, which meant the main engine escaped total destruction, the sheer force of the impact had still left tiny cracks on some of the core parts.
According to Luo Xin’s assessment, if the engine kept running at full power, it would only last another three months—then it’d be done for.
No doubt about it.
Yet Commander Lin and Deputy Ye insisted that she make sure the engine held out for the full three months she’d promised—no less.
But…
Wasn’t this just making things impossible for her?
Watching the flood of engine data, Luo Xin let out a troubled sigh.
Just then a hand landed gently on her shoulder from behind.
“Don’t stress yourself out. Just do your best.”
“If it really can’t be fixed, I’ll talk to the Commander and get him to give up on the Qiongxiao.”
Ye Lingwei spoke up, attempting to comfort her.
It might be one of the Federation’s only four Warstars.
It might be the flagship of the Fifth Fleet, and a symbol of hope.
It might be a lot of things…
But when it comes down to it, nothing is irreplaceable.
Ye Lingwei wasn’t about to spout nonsense about going down with the ship, and she was sure Mu Qingxue felt the same.
So in the worst case, they’d just abandon ship.
As for Luo Xin—all she could do was her best. No point piling on the pressure.
After reassuring Luo Xin, Ye Lingwei contacted Lunar Headquarters to give them a status report.
When she heard that although Mu Qingxue was injured, it was only some fractures and external wounds, she finally let out a sigh of relief.
External wounds were nothing—a medbay pod could patch those up in a snap.
Fractures were more troublesome, but not life-threatening. Two or three months of rest and they’d heal.
Finally, Mu Xingchen shared a set of coordinates with Ye Lingwei.
She was told to gradually lure the Klein fleet there over the next three months and arrive right on schedule.
“Commander-in-Chief, is this…”
“That’s right. The final battle—three months from now, right there!”
“Understood, Commander-in-Chief!”
After the call ended,
Mu Xingchen let out a quiet sigh herself.
After this battle it was probably time to think seriously about Qingxue’s marriage.
Even if people got married later these days, Qingxue was already thirty-four…
The real challenge was finding someone actually worthy of her. Ordinary men probably weren’t her type anyway…
“Come on, don’t overthink it. Ye Lingwei said your granddaughter’s not in any real danger, right?”
Vladimir, who’d been sitting nearby with Ryan during the call, tried to comfort her.
Both he and Ryan had been there the whole time.
“No, that’s not what’s on my mind.”
“Then what is it?”
“You both know that thirty years back my son and daughter-in-law died in a shuttle accident…”
Hearing this, both Vladimir and Ryan couldn’t help but feel a pang of sympathy.
It really had been a tragedy.
Back then, Mu Xingchen’s son and daughter-in-law had both been outstanding figures at the pinnacle of humanity.
One had a natural brain domain rating of 24.97%, the other hit 24.95%.
Their union led to the birth of Mu Qingxue, whose innate brain domain reached 27.55%.
Such a pity…
Because of that accident, as their shuttle was docking there was a mishap—it collided with a departing cargo ship.
To make matters worse, that cargo ship was loaded with dangerous chemicals. There was an immediate, massive explosion.
Neither ship had any survivors.
The two highest brain domain humans of their time were lost in an instant.
Now Mu Qingxue was the last of the Mu family. If anything happened to her, their line would end for good.
“So…you’re thinking about your granddaughter’s marriage?”
Catching on, Ryan asked.
“Yeah. It’s just, finding the right match isn’t easy. To be honest, I doubt she’ll even look at an ordinary suitor.”
“Hey old Mu, what about my family?”
“Your family…”
Mu Xingchen tried to recall.
Then his expression suddenly changed—he went from thoughtful to furious.
“Isn’t your grandson already married?”
“Not him! I mean my great-grandson!”
“Great-grandson? Didn’t you just brag about having a great-grandson last year?”
Mu Xingchen’s anger spiked.
How old was this great-grandson anyway?
Just turned one!
Mu Xingchen didn’t mind the idea of Mu Qingxue marrying a younger man but…
This was taking it a bit far—even he had to draw the line somewhere.
He rolled up his sleeves, ready to throw down with Ryan right then and there.
It was at that moment Vladimir spoke up.
“Old Mu, I actually do know someone worthy of your Qingxue.”
“Vladimir, don’t tell me you’re about to suggest your great-grandson. If I remember right, he’s even younger than Ryan’s, only three months old.”
Mu Xingchen paused, but looked even more wary.
“No, I’m not that kind of person!”
“What do you mean by that, Vladimir?”
That set Ryan off. He leapt to his feet, pointing across the table and shouting at Vladimir.
For a while the meeting room was pure chaos.
As for the soldiers standing outside the room, they were all sweating bullets, but nobody dared step in to break things up.
Five minutes later, the three had finally calmed down.
“Old Mu, I was actually being serious!”
“Fine. If it’s not your three-month-old great-grandson, then who do you mean?”
“Lin Yu! Lin Yu!”
…….
……
Mu Xingchen blinked in surprise.
Ryan looked equally stunned.
And then—
“Lin Yu?” they said together.
“That’s right. Look, they’re both gifted—one has a natural brain domain over 27%, the other is past 32%. If those two had a child…it could spark a whole new stage of human evolution!”
The words hung in the air.
Mu Xingchen and Ryan just stared, dumbfounded.
But as they thought about it, it really did seem possible.
“But…Qingxue is fourteen years older than Lin Yu!”
“Don’t you Chinese have a saying—’three years older, a golden treasure’? Fourteen is just four golden treasures and then some.”
“Exactly! With our average life span and how long we stay young these days, a fourteen-year age gap is nothing. In a hundred years, they’ll barely notice the difference.”
Vladimir and Ryan chimed in, both eager to convince him.
Mu Xingchen was clearly starting to consider it.
This proposal…
Maybe it was worth thinking about…
At that moment, no one could have imagined
that the Federation’s top three leaders were in the middle of a war meeting, plotting Mu Qingxue’s marriage prospects.
