Chapter Index

    Midnight.

    Time moved into winter.

Because of Jiangzhou’s geographical location daytime temperatures remain high but nights are cool with changing temperature variations.

Zhang Yuan wearing a coat and a baseball cap hurried out of the bar towards the parking lot.

After coming into money, he fell in love with the lavish allure of bars.

Here, money allowed him to feel superior.

    That feeling was intoxicating.

He became attached to this lifestyle not wanting to die and sought Xu Shaochen for help.

For some reason his right eyelid twitched continuously tonight, leaving him uneasy.

This discomfort made him leave the bar early planning to rest at his temporary home.

To bar patrons, midnight seemed early.

His pace quickened as he scanned his surroundings feeling watched.

    “Clang!”

Without noticing, he kicked over a beggar’s tin scattering money everywhere.

“Are you blind? Can’t you see?”

The beggar with a supposedly broken leg stood and yelled at Zhang Yuan.

Apparently, Zhang Yuan was a miracle worker, healing the beggar instantly.

“Sorry, sorry, I didn’t see it.”

Stunned by the beggar’s sudden mobility, he apologized and hurried to the parking lot even faster.

“Why are you in such a rush to die? Afraid to miss the last ride to the underworld?”

The beggar cursed watching Zhang Yuan’s retreating figure before collecting the scattered money.

Counting the money, he shook his head muttering,

“Business is slow income poor. Only 1,000 so far this year. Time to move.”

The beggar’s voice wasn’t quiet and Zhang Yuan heard it.

Normally, he’d retaliate but his unease was strong today.

Usually not superstitious, career change to assassin made him start believing.

He now gave incense daily to a Buddhist statue.

Finally reaching his car just as he was about to open the car door he found it slightly ajar.

    “Bang!”

A hand suddenly emerged closing the door shut again.

Zhang Yuan’s face changed looking up seeing three people blocking his way.

Terror seized him realizing he’d overlooked them.

“Which faction do you belong to?”

Suppressing shock, one hand subtly reached for a knife at his waist.

Being new, he hadn’t acquired a gun yet.

    “Click!”

Just touching his waist a gun was pointed at his head.

“Zhang Yuan? We advise against futile resistance. No harm intended. Someone wants to see you. Come with us.”

The leader said coolly to Zhang Yuan. They were sent by Zhao Chen.

Unaware Zhao Chen and Xie Ru were detained, they’d tracked Zhang Yuan.

“Okay, okay, don’t hurt me. I’ll go with you.”

Raising his hands, Zhang Yuan backed down.

    “Get in the car.”

They pushed him into a nearby car.

Realizing their plan he knew they’d watched his car, waiting.

What about those watching him moments before?

Was it just nerves? Taken away, they drove to their hideout.

Inside, the leader attempted to call Zhao Chen.

Calls failed to connect stirring unease within him.

    “Clatter!”

Reaching an intersection, a white Toyota abruptly crashed into their car.

Three more vehicles approached blocking avenues.

Four cars in total, fifteen people surrounded Zhang Yuan’s vehicle.

Amidst the crash, Zhang Yuan lucked out exiting through a window.

Relieved by this turn of luck.

Timing couldn’t be better saving him.

But he was instantly cornered again by a gun.

    Stiff, he felt blood freeze.

For the second time tonight, a gun touched his head.

    “B-brother, don’t shoot.”

He dared not glance up stammering.

    “Take him.”

The cold voice ordered and Zhang Yuan was once more pushed into a car.

    Cars quickly departed.

The white Toyota however rammed into their overturned car again.

His boss insisted that Xu Sir’s orders were to silence them.

Meanwhile, someone dazed crawled out wreckage.

Head peeking out saw the Toyota rushing terrifying him.

    “Boom!”

Another strike compacting the car, ensured unlikely survival.

    Toyota’s frontend deformed finally departed.

    Driver glanced up.

Intersection cameras were long removed leaving cables.

“Who are you? Where are you taking me? Want money? I’ve only 300,000 left take it and release me.”

In the car, Zhang Yuan stammered sweating.

Originally having 2 million spending left him with only 300,000.

Zhang Yuan lavishly burned through riches wanting to prolong his life.
