Chapter Index

Beside a field on the back mountain of Liushu Township.

The graves of Liu Ruxu’s parents are here at the head of the field with several cypress trees planted in front.

    “Crackle…”

The sound of firecrackers startled a flock of birds.

Fireworks and firecrackers aren’t allowed in the city now, but there’s no such restriction in this remote area.

After lighting the firecrackers, the sisters knelt in front of the graves burning paper, chatting as they did.

“Dad, Mom, can you see? Xiaoxue and I are both pregnant. You’ll be grandparents…”

They talked about everyday matters, avoiding mentioning any hardships from the past years to not worry their parents.

Xu Shaochen stood nearby leaning against a cypress, quietly watching without impatience.

In some places, pregnant women shouldn’t visit graves, but young people now don’t adhere to such taboos.

“Have we waited too long? Let’s head back.”

After a while, Liu Ruxu and Liu Ruxue stood, wiping their tear-streaked faces, giving Xu Shaochen a smile.

“Wait a moment. Since we’re here, let me pay my respects to my parents-in-law.”

Xu Shaochen said, bowing several times before Liu Ruxu’s parents’ graves.

“Dad, Mom, don’t worry. I’ll take good care of Ruxu and Xiaoxue, won’t let them suffer or be bullied.”

After speaking, Xu Shaochen stood, brushing leaves and dust from his knees, leading the sisters away.

Frankly, if Liu Ruxu’s parents were alive,

knowing Xu Shaochen had wronged both their daughters, they might fight him.

Returning to the village, they saw a crowd gathered around the car discussing something.

Seeing Xu Shaochen and the others,

the crowd smiled warmly, quickly approaching them.

“Ruxu, Xiaoxue, you’re back. Why not come in for some water? You two have grown into fine young ladies.”

Leading them was a man in his fifties, smiling like a blooming chrysanthemum.

“Uncle Wang, you haven’t changed a bit over the years.”

“Changed, changed… grown old,” Uncle Wang remarked with a hearty laugh.

Liu Ruxu clearly knew this man, introducing him to Xu Shaochen: “This is Uncle Wang, our village head.”

    “Hello.”

Xu Shaochen nodded, extending his hand to Uncle Wang.

Uncle Wang was flattered, quickly clasping it with both hands: “You must be Ruxu’s husband. Such a fine and handsome man.”

Xu Shaochen chuckled, suspecting an ulterior motive.

“Uncle Wang, we’re in a hurry, so we won’t delay you further.”

    Liu Ruxue told Uncle Wang.

Uncle Wang’s expression changed, feigning displeasure: “Xiaoxue, what do you mean by ‘delay’? It’s not often you visit, and now you won’t even enter my home?”

He turned, smiling at Xu Shaochen: “Young man, it’s almost time for a meal. Why not join us?”

“Uncle Wang, you might as well say what you need.” Xu Shaochen said straightforwardly.

Uncle Wang’s smile froze, sighing after a moment: “Since that’s the case, I won’t mince words. Nephew, knowing you’re successful, I hope for your help, for Ruxu’s and Xiaoxue’s sake.”

Gesturing around, he continued: “As you can see, our place is poor. Many successful young people have left, never returning, let alone helping the village.”

“Last year, I led the village to grow strawberries. They’re doing well but can’t find a market, so…”

He didn’t need to finish. Xu Shaochen understood.

They wanted help finding a market for the strawberries.

Uncle Wang, fearing refusal, quickly added: “Even at lower prices, they can’t go to waste with us.”

Others, knowing the sisters had a wealthy boyfriend, joined in the commotion.

But as the village head, upon hearing of the capable boyfriend, he immediately thought of his dilemma.

Wealthy people know wealthy people, probably some in the fruit trade. Finding a market should be easy.

“Yes, young man, please help us. You must know many people who can connect us.”

“Ruxu, Xiaoxue, you must help! My family’s money is tied up in this.”

Others pleaded, with a tone of helplessness.

In Liushu Township, investing in strawberries isn’t insignificant for them.

If unsold, they’d be financially ruined.

“Shaochen, if you can help, please do.”

Liu Ruxue tugged Xu Shaochen’s sleeve.

Many she knew since childhood, shared meals with, and the request wasn’t excessive.

Xu Shaochen nodded, telling Uncle Wang: “Leave a phone number. I’ll contact you first thing when arranged.”

“Thank you, young man. How should I address you?”

Uncle Wang’s joy was overwhelming, and others smiled as well.

    “My surname is Xu.”

Seeing their smiles, Xu Shaochen couldn’t help but smile too.

“Mr. Xu, thank you. You’re a great benefactor to Liushu Township.”

Uncle Wang held Xu Shaochen’s hand tightly, face full of gratitude and excitement.

Declining Uncle Wang’s invitation, Xu Shaochen left with Liu Ruxu and Liu Ruxue for the County Town.

“He won’t just be polite and forget about it, right?”

Watching the car leave, excitement waned, and worry crept in.

“He’s a big boss; with so much on his plate, he could forget about our little issue.”

    Some agreed, filled with unease.

“Enough! Keep quiet. The boss keeps his word. Besides, there’s Ruxu and Xiaoxue. He won’t forget.”

Uncle Wang snapped, though he too worried internally, needing to calm the villagers.

Thinking to himself, he resolved to call in a few days. If forgotten, they’d be in trouble.
