Chapter Index

Each class was fifty minutes long.

As soon as it ended, Xu Shaochen left. After all, a top student has the privilege of being willful. He only attended one class a day, just enough to avoid failing.

“Hey, Shaochen, wait for me. Can you go to the movies with me tonight?”

As he stepped out of the classroom, a sweet fragrance followed him. Xie Wei caught up with him, smiling brightly.

“I have plans tonight. Let’s do it another day.” Xu Shaochen had just agreed to take his three buddies to a club tonight. Women were always around, but brothers weren’t.

Xie Wei was speechless after hearing this. No wonder he had been single for two years in college. Are there really men like this?

“Alright then, how about I treat you to lunch?” Xu Shaochen suggested, looking at Xie Wei. After all, he didn’t want to miss out on this beauty; he hadn’t even had a taste yet.

Xie Wei nodded, knowing that pushing too hard could be off-putting. “Okay, I’ll treat you next time.”

As Xie Wei left, Xu Shaochen decided to go to the hospital to check on his mom.

    “Ring ring ring ring…”

His phone suddenly rang. He took it out and saw it was an unknown number.

    “Hello, who’s this?”

“Are you Mr. Xu Shaochen? I’m Dean Fu from the City Hospital.”

“Dean Fu, did something happen to my mom?” Upon hearing it was the hospital dean, Xu Shaochen’s heart immediately leaped to his throat.

“No, Mr. Xu, please don’t worry. Your mother is currently safe. However, today someone tried to bribe our hospital staff to use the excuse of unpaid medical bills to kick your mother out. But rest assured, our hospital always puts people first and would never let that happen. However, for safety reasons, I felt it was necessary to inform you.”

“Where is that person?” Xu Shaochen’s anger flared instantly, and he squeezed out his words through gritted teeth.

“The person is still here. Our staff is holding him up. Will you…”

    “I’ll be right there!”

Before the other person could finish speaking, Xu Shaochen hung up the phone. He then walked out of the teaching building, got in his car, and sped toward the hospital.

Anyone who dared mess with his mom was someone he’d dare to kill.

    ………

Twenty minutes later, he reached his destination.

“Mr. Xu, you’re here. The person is inside.”

Dean Fu, dressed in a black suit, personally stood at the entrance to greet Xu Shaochen. Seeing him get out of the car, the dean quickly approached.

“Dean Fu, thank you for informing me.” Xu Shaochen looked at the dean and added a word of thanks, his expression so dark it could drip water.

Upon hearing this, Dean Fu replied righteously, “Mr. Xu, you’re too polite. If such a thing occurred, our hospital’s reputation would be tarnished. Had we not needed to inform you, we would’ve already taken that person to the police.”

Xu Shaochen merely nodded at this bureaucratic response, not taking it to heart, and instinctively quickened his pace.

With Dean Fu leading the way, they reached an office. Xu Shaochen pushed the door open and walked in.

Inside the office, a young man was discussing something with a doctor. This young man, of course, was the one sent by Liu Hui.

    “You… why are you here!”

Upon seeing Xu Shaochen, the young man’s face immediately changed, and he stood up. He now realized the doctor had merely been stalling him.

Damn, since when was this hospital so principled that they’d give a damn about a pauper?

Sensing the situation was wrong, he immediately tried to bolt.

    “Bang!”

Xu Shaochen, in a fit of rage, lifted his foot and kicked out.

    “Ah!”

The young man let out a cry of pain and crashed to the ground from the kick.

Back when Xu Shaochen’s father was still alive, he had practiced boxing under his father’s guidance and had kept up with it all these years. That kick was not something an average person could withstand.

    “Bang!”

Just as the young man tried to get up, Xu Shaochen stomped him back down, gritting his teeth as he spoke. “Talk. Who sent you?”

“No one sent me! I don’t even understand what you’re saying. Let me go! I’m calling the cops!”

The young man thought he might still have a chance and struggled desperately on the ground, adamantly denying his purpose.

“Uh, Brother Qing, sorry, but I just recorded everything.”

The doctor who had been stalling the young man earlier awkwardly waved his phone, feeling a bit guilty.

“You *&^$! You tricked me, and we’re even from the same village!”

Zhao Qing’s face twisted with anger. He couldn’t believe someone from his own village had set him up.

“Brother Qing, what you said is wrong. I’m a doctor, naturally I stand by the patient’s side.” The doctor, known as Er Gouzi, defended himself righteously and then threw Xu Shaochen a fawning smile.

By now, from the dean down to the nurses, everyone in the City Hospital knew that an assistant hospital director had been fired for crossing Xu Shaochen. This man was someone not to be trifled with.

Between offending a fellow villager and offending someone powerful, there’s no contest.

Xu Shaochen looked down at Zhao Qing and sneered, “You don’t have to tell me. You can wait to rot in jail. Is it worth it?”

“It was Mr. Liu, Liu Hui, the boss of Dahui Demolition Company,” Zhao Qing hesitated, but eventually spilled the beans.

Xu Shaochen frowned, “Why did he do this?”

    “Yesterday… at the 4S store…”

Before Zhao Qing could finish speaking, Xu Shaochen suddenly remembered. It was that fat pig. A sharp, cold glint flashed in his eyes.

    That guy deserved to die.

“Leave your contact info, then get lost. You’re smart, so I trust you understand what I mean.” Xu Shaochen tucked away the coldness in his eyes and spoke coldly to Zhao Qing, who was still on the floor.

“Got it. Mr. Xu, don’t worry. I understand.” Zhao Qing immediately nodded, left his number, and scrambled to his feet, fleeing in panic.

Without needing a reminder from Xu Shaochen, he already knew this was something he couldn’t tell Liu Hui about. After all, he had just betrayed Liu Hui, and someone as ruthless as Liu Hui wouldn’t let him live for that.

Moreover, he was now in Xu Shaochen’s grasp. If he ever disobeyed, Xu Shaochen could either call the cops or tell Liu Hui about the betrayal. Either way, he was as good as dead.

“Mr. Xu, is there anything we can help with?” Dean Fu tentatively asked, watching Xu Shaochen.

Xu Shaochen shook his head, “No need. I’ll handle it myself. Send me the recording, and let’s pretend today never happened.”

“Yes, yes, of course, Mr. Xu. You can count on us; we know what should and shouldn’t be said.”

Both Dean Fu and the doctor known as Er Gouzi nodded quickly in agreement. After all, in these times, it’s okay to eat recklessly, but reckless words can get you killed.

“How can you be like this? My brother got beaten up because of you, and now you’re here at the hospital just to break up and demand money?”

“What did I do wrong? Can’t I break up with him? He borrowed 1,000 yuan from me, and now that we’re breaking up, shouldn’t he pay it back?”

Just as Xu Shaochen stepped out of the office, he heard an argument nearby.

One of the voices sounded familiar; it was Zhao Qingyu’s. She had mentioned that her brother was hospitalized here yesterday. How did she end up arguing with someone?

Xu Shaochen frowned and quickened his pace towards the ward where the voices were coming from. Seeing this, Dean Fu hurried to follow.
