Chapter Index

“Don’t push me too far! I’ve already knelt down, what more do you want?!”

Liu Wenbiao glared angrily at Xu Shaochen. Today, he had suffered extreme humiliation. He hadn’t expected Xu Shaochen to show no mercy, making him all the more furious.

    “Bang!”

Xu Shaochen lifted his foot and kicked him to the ground, saying coldly, “Just because you kneel, I must go easy on you? Who do you think you are? God?”

    “Damn…”

    “Slap!”

Just as Liu Wenbiao was about to swear, Liu Zhong slapped him hard across the face. “Shut your mouth, you useless brat!”

Liu Wenbiao was disgruntled, but he swallowed his words. He didn’t dare anger his father any further.

After all, today he had really stirred up big trouble.

“Sir, my son acted foolishly and offended you. He deserves this, and we accept it.”

Liu Zhong respectfully said to Xu Shaochen before turning and walking away.

It seemed clear to him now that the factory would have to be reformed. If everything wasn’t fully brought up to standard, no department in Haiwen County would dare approve its reopening.

This time, they really hit an iron wall!

Harbor a grudge against Xu Shaochen?

Heh, he didn’t have the guts for that.

The most important thing in life is to know one’s limits.

Isn’t it better to live well? Why dig your own grave?

Although Liu Wenbiao was unwilling, he realized that continuing to fight would only make things worse, so he slunk away in defeat.

“Come back and take your trash with you.”

Xu Shaochen called out after Liu Wenbiao as the latter walked away.

Liu Wenbiao hurriedly turned back, picking up the five-shot revolver off the ground before leaving.

    “Shaochen, thank you so much.”

Wan Liang and Luo Juan both raised a glass of alcohol, toasting Xu Shaochen.

No one else disturbed them after that. The group continued eating and chatting, enjoying themselves immensely.

After the meal and a short sit of around twenty minutes, Xu Shaochen took his leave.

“Remember to visit again when you return to Jiangzhou. I’ll prepare some of my best dishes for you,” Wan Liang said.

Wan Liang and Luo Juan escorted Xu Shaochen all the way to the door.

As they watched the powerful Mercedes G-Class drive away, their expressions were complex.

Xu Shaochen really had made it big. He was wealthy and influential—he had reached a level they could only dream of.

But what reassured them was that Xu Shaochen was still the same Xu Shaochen. He hadn’t become arrogant because of his newfound wealth.

“Xiao Wan, who were those people just now? I didn’t know you had such connections.”

“Yeah, you’ve been keeping this under wraps. Liu Zhong even knelt to him!”

“Incredible! How come we never heard you mention such amazing friends before?”

The people who had been gathered outside, gossiping, rushed over, bombarding Wan Liang and Luo Juan with questions.

After all, to them, Liu Zhong and his son were already powerful figures in the county, practically local tyrants.

But now, the pair of local tyrants had actually knelt before someone else, leaving everyone in shock.

What shocked them even more was that Wan Liang and Luo Juan knew someone like Xu Shaochen. To them, this was astonishing.

Everyone’s eyes were filled with envy. To know such influential people could invite all sorts of benefits! “Ah, why can’t my friends be so impressive? Now I can’t even find someone to latch onto.”

Feeling the envious stares, Wan Liang and Luo Juan both experienced an inexplicable sense of satisfaction.

“Did you see? One of my old classmates is that powerful guy.”

The road from Haiwen County to Nanshan Town was a national highway, with Nanshan Town sitting right beside it. Half an hour’s drive would take you there.

However, the road from Nanshan Town to Xu Family Village was much tougher. Full of potholes and with landslides often occurring on rainy days.

This stretch was rough and long, taking over an hour to traverse.

It was also one of the reasons Xu Family Village remained poor. After all, there’s a saying: if you want to get rich, you first have to build roads.

The poor condition of the road ensured that Xu Family Village remained underdeveloped.

Even traveling in the powerful Mercedes G-Class, Xu Shaochen and Song Xinran had a tough time with the journey.

Long Yi and Long Er didn’t seem to mind though, having experienced much harsher environments before.

“This time, I’m going to have this road fixed.”

Xu Shaochen said. To him, fixing the road was the best gift he could give to his village. With money, he believed it was time to benefit his hometown.

“That would be wonderful! If the road is fixed, coming back for the New Year will be so much easier,” Song Xinran agreed.

Finally, after a bumpy ride, they arrived at the entrance of Xu Family Village.

The villagers who saw the car were puzzled.

After all, their village was so remote that they rarely had visitors, especially in such a fancy car.

They didn’t know how much the car cost, but they recognized the Mercedes-Benz logo.

    “Third Uncle!”

Xu Shaochen rolled down the window and called out to a shirtless middle-aged man.

    “Is that… Shaochen?”

The shirtless man hesitated, not quite sure. How could Xu Shaochen possibly be coming back in such a nice car?

“It’s me! Heading to work in the fields?” Xu Shaochen smiled as he got out of the car and handed out a cigarette.

“Oh my God, it really is Shaochen! He’s changed so much, I almost didn’t recognize him.”

“Yeah, Shaochen must have struck it rich!”

“College students really do have a bright future. No wonder people say you have to go to college…”

The other villagers were amazed, staring at Xu Shaochen with wide eyes.

“How’s your mother’s condition?” Third Uncle quickly took the cigarette and asked.

Xu Shaochen smiled and said, “Pretty good. The surgery’s already been completed.”

    “That’s great! That’s great news!”

“Third Uncle!” Song Xinran also got out of the car.

    “Is this…?”

When everyone saw Song Xinran, none of them recognized her. After all, she hadn’t come back for years and had changed too much.

“It’s me, Xinran!” Song Xinran said, smiling.

“Good heavens, this girl is Xinran? She’s grown into such a young lady!”

“Yeah, we even talked about arranging a marriage with my son back then. But now, looking at her, my brat isn’t worthy.”

“Xinran is probably dating Shaochen now…”

Everyone started discussing it excitedly, showering Song Xinran with praise, making her feel embarrassed.

“Third Uncle, uncles and aunts, I’ll head home first and visit you all another day.”

Xu Shaochen said to the crowd.

Upon hearing this, the previously lively atmosphere instantly fell silent, and everyone’s expressions changed.

Witnessing this, Xu Shaochen realized something might be wrong. He furrowed his brows. “Third Uncle, what’s going on? Did something happen to my family?”
