Chapter Index

After Xu Shaochen walked out of the Principal’s office, he subconsciously took out his phone and glanced at it.

This was a habit. Many people do this—after completing something, they can’t help but take out their phone for a quick look.

Xu Shaochen noticed that his WeChat friend request had been accepted. Judging by the profile picture, it was indeed the same as the photo Mei Liangxin had shown him. The WeChat username was ‘Shadow’.

    Shadow: ‘Who is this?’

Xu Shaochen chuckled. This woman was indeed straightforward.

“Hello, I’m the person introduced by your brother.” Xu Shaochen replied. He was an upright person, so he responded politely.

Quite a while passed without a reply, so Xu Shaochen sent another message, only to receive a notice that he had been deleted as a friend.

In that instant, a storm of expletives ran through his mind.

“Interesting… A challenge makes it all the more fun.”

Xu Shaochen muttered to himself, putting away his phone, feeling a bit lost after being blocked.

At noon, Xu Shaochen had lunch with Xie Wei. Afterward, he went to the Company to meet Liu Rushuang, then to the bank in the afternoon to see Liu Ruxu. In the evening, he had dinner with Song Xinran.

The day passed by busily yet fulfillingly.

Tonight, Xu Shaochen went to bed early, ignoring Linda’s attempts to seduce him. To prevent any midnight ambush, he even locked his bedroom door.

He needed a good night’s sleep tonight because tomorrow morning was Du Feng and Du Jun’s memorial service. Xu Shaochen definitely had to attend to assist Du Ruyan.

After all, they were his father-in-law and brother-in-law, so he should see them off one last time.

    ………

    Morning.

Xu Shaochen got up early, washed up, put on a deep black suit, and left the house with Long San and Long Si, heading to the Du Family Residence.

Side note: Xu Shaochen and Du Ruyan selected Du Feng and Du Jun’s graves themselves—two prime locations costing over a million yuan.

That’s right. If you don’t strive for success, not only can you not afford a house while alive, you won’t be able to afford one after death either.

    Just that harsh.

The Du Family Residence, from the front gate to the main hall, was draped in white as a somber mourning tune played, casting a heavy mood over every visitor.

Those attending the memorial service were all reputable figures from Jiangzhou, such as Ye Huaiyuan and Sun Hai, as well as some of Du Feng’s friends or business partners who had traveled from out of town.

In summary, it was a grand and solemn memorial service. The outside of the Du Family Residence was lined with luxury cars, and a sea of black-clad people flowed in and out.

Du Feng and Du Jun’s coffins were placed in the center of the mourning hall.

Xu Shaochen, with a white flower pinned to his chest, stood beside Du Ruyan, who was dressed in a black evening dress. Du Ruyan’s face was streaked with tears, while Xu Shaochen’s expression was equally solemn.

    “My condolences.”

“Bow once. Bow twice. Bow thrice. The family will now return the courtesy.”

Du Ruyan appeared pale, as if she could faint at any moment. She was entirely leaning on Xu Shaochen’s shoulder, otherwise, she would have collapsed to the ground.

“Brother, your death is so tragic… Brother, how could you leave us like this?”

“Wuwuwu… Ah Feng, my nephew… How could you leave, just like that?”

At that moment, a commotion erupted. A group of people rushed in and immediately began wailing at the coffins.

Everyone was stunned by the sudden scene but quickly understood, assuming that the members of Du Feng’s family were simply very emotionally attached.

However, Xu Shaochen and Du Ruyan’s faces turned ugly, for these people were the very same who had tried to claim the inheritance the other night and had been driven away by Xu Shaochen. Du Ruyan’s aunt and her kin.

They didn’t believe for a second that these people were here to mourn. They could only imagine what trouble they would cause now.

Du Ruyan, who had been on the verge of collapsing, instantly stiffened with tension, anxious that her father and brother’s memorial service would be ruined by these people.

Xu Shaochen grasped Du Ruyan’s delicate hand to calm her down.

After several moments of hypocritical crying, Du Ruyan’s aunt wiped her tears and choked out: “Ruyan, I know this might not be the right time to say this, but I have to speak up. Look at all these friends of Du Feng gathered here today. Everyone is a witness. Let’s distribute Du Feng’s possessions now, and avoid any disputes later that might harm our family ties.”

“To be honest, I don’t actually care about the inheritance. But this was something my brother left behind. We’re all relatives, so everyone should get a share, if only as a memento. I’m sure Du Feng, knowing this from the afterlife, would be happy that his earnings are helping out his family members. Don’t you think?”

That was the exact plan she had suggested the other night. By bringing it up in public like this, she wanted to see how Du Ruyan would handle it.

She didn’t believe Xu Shaochen would dare to have her shot in front of everyone in such a setting.

Wow! The moment her words fell, the crowd erupted into an uproar.

Though she spoke eloquently, no one in the room was foolish enough to misunderstand her true intentions.

The underlying message was clear: The inheritance must be split, and it should happen now.

“You… you shameless people! Get out of here! You’re not welcome here!”

Du Ruyan’s face turned pale with anger as she pointed at her aunt and scolded.

She never imagined these people could stoop so low, to the point of disturbing the peace of her father and brother in front of their coffins. It was outrageous.

“Ruyan, that’s not fair. Yes, you’re Du Feng’s daughter, but the inheritance shouldn’t all belong to you alone. Why shouldn’t we get a share?”

“Exactly, Ruyan. Don’t be so selfish. I’m sure your father in heaven wouldn’t want you to behave like this.”

“Ruyan, we don’t want to cause a scene at your father’s memorial, but you can’t bully us either. How can you not give us a single cent?”

One by one, those relatives of Du Ruyan began to denounce her as if she were some villain.

“Get out! All of you, get out! You people forced my mother to her death, and forced my father to sever ties with the Du Family. Now you have the gall to say such things? It’s laughable to the extreme! Get out! Don’t stand here and dirty the path my father and brother are taking to heaven!”

Du Ruyan snapped. It wasn’t about the money; she just didn’t want to give a single penny to these people.

Because even when her father was alive, he wouldn’t have spared them a glance.

Everyone gasped again. They hadn’t realized there was such a dramatic backstory. It seemed that these relatives were truly beyond shameless.

“Alright, don’t get upset. Let me handle this.”

Xu Shaochen pulled the agitated Du Ruyan behind him and said softly.
