Chapter 47: Mei Liangxin’s Business
by xennovel“Now, can you tell me?”
Xu Shaochen was eating grilled skewers as he looked over at Mei Liangxin.
It had to be said, the reason Uncle Li’s grilled skewers were so popular was because he was the only one on this street who used real lamb meat.
“Do you remember I told you I often ended up in the station?” Mei Liangxin took a bite of his chicken wing, feeling like he was biting into his meager savings. The pain was real.
Ugh, this late-night snack alone could have been enough for a more… charitable endeavor with some lovely lady.
Xu Shaochen nodded, “So what happened?”
“I told you before, there’s talent in there. I got this piece of news from one of those talented individuals inside.” Mei Liangxin couldn’t help but lower his voice as he said this.
Xu Shaochen narrowed his eyes, “Can you confirm the source?”
“Heh, that guy was a government official in the city before he went in. This info is solid.” Mei Liangxin chuckled, his eyebrows dancing with excitement.
Xu Shaochen showed a hint of interest, “Go on, tell me more.”
“Wait a minute. To prevent you from ditching me after you get the info, I need some proof.” Mei Liangxin pulled out his phone and activated the recording function.
This was his clever move. He could have recorded secretly, but he chose to do it openly, making him seem trustworthy rather than deceitful.
Xu Shaochen smiled and gestured for him to continue, not saying anything more.
Mei Liangxin looked around and then leaned closer to Xu Shaochen, whispering, “There’s a street in the Old City that’s scheduled for demolition soon. If you can secure it in advance, the compensation will be a massive payout. I only want one percent once everything’s done.”
One percent doesn’t sound like a lot, but don’t forget, it’s the demolition compensation for an entire street— we’re talking billions.
“You want me to undermine the government?” Xu Shaochen said with a half-smile, while mentally taking note. After all, it was practically free money.
However, he still wouldn’t trust it that easily. He’d need Linda to verify further.
Mei Liangxin grinned, “Someone’s going to make that money, why not us? We need to act fast, or someone else will beat us to it.”
“Half a percent.” Xu Shaochen responded calmly. He knew Mei Liangxin would agree because the man was smart.
“Alright, deal!” Mei Liangxin agreed without hesitation. He didn’t really think Xu Shaochen would give him one percent anyway.
Whatever amount he ended up with would still be a fortune for him. Even half a percent would net him millions.
“Cheers.”
Xu Shaochen raised his glass and clinked it against Mei Liangxin’s. Both downed their drinks at the same time and smiled wordlessly.
It had to be said, even though they had only met twice, both felt the other was exactly the kind of person they could get along with.
“Have you pissed off someone?”
Suddenly, Mei Liangxin put his glass down, raising an eyebrow as he looked at Xu Shaochen.
“Oh? What makes you say that?” Xu Shaochen asked with a puzzled look.
Mei Liangxin raised his chin, “Behind you. Four guys are heading this way, and it’s clear they’re here for you.”
“Are you scared?” Xu Shaochen asked without turning around, still analyzing who might have sent the men.
After all, he had indeed pissed off quite a few people.
Mei Liangxin snorted, “Scared? You’re my money-maker. Whoever tries to mess with you, I’ll fight them to the death.”
While they were talking, four young men had already surrounded them.
“You must be Xu Shaochen.”
One of them, a guy with yellow hair, glanced at a photo, then looked at Xu Shaochen and spoke in a cold tone.
“What do you want?” Xu Shaochen asked calmly, not even lifting his head as he continued eating his barbecue.
“Heh, what do we want? You’ve been pissing off anyone and everyone; today, we’ll break your leg to teach you a lesson.” Yellow Hair sneered, an air of superiority in his tone, as if Xu Shaochen was already a piece of meat waiting to be butchered.
Xu Shaochen put down his bamboo skewer and beckoned to Yellow Hair, “Come closer and say that again. I didn’t quite catch what you said.”
“Damn, who do you think you’re fooling? You think I’ll just walk closer so you can eat me or something…” Yellow Hair scoffed, leaning his face toward Xu Shaochen.
“Bang!”
“Aaaah!”
Before Yellow Hair could finish his sentence, a beer bottle shattered on his head, and in an instant, beer and blood mixed as he collapsed to the ground, screaming in pain.
“Damn it, kill him!”
The remaining three were startled and lunged at Xu Shaochen.
“Crash!”
Mei Liangxin, quick as lightning, picked up his chair and smashed it onto one of them.
“You’re all focusing on him like I don’t even exist, huh?” Mei Liangxin grumbled irritably, feeling overlooked and very angry.
The guy who got hit with the chair collapsed, as if his soul had left his body. He spat out blood, purely from feeling so unjustly treated.
“Aaaah, they’re fighting!”
The other customers around them jumped in fright, quickly forming a circle to watch the show.
Xu Shaochen swiftly took down the other two in a matter of moments. A few small-time thugs were no match for him.
“Who sent you?”
Xu Shaochen towered over the four, asking coldly.
“You bastard, you’re dead…” Yellow Hair struggled to lift his head, glaring at Xu Shaochen through gritted teeth, trying to get up.
“Crash!”
Before Yellow Hair could say more, Xu Shaochen grabbed another chair and smashed it down on him, his expression completely unchanged.
“I’ll ask again, who sent you? If you don’t give me the answer I want, I guarantee you won’t see tomorrow’s sun.”
Xu Shaochen pressed his foot down on Yellow Hair’s shoulder, pinning him to the ground with an eerie calm.
Xu Shaochen’s voice was steady, just like his expression, devoid of any emotion, yet everyone couldn’t help but shiver.
At that moment, no one doubted he meant exactly what he said.
Yellow Hair and his friends’ faces turned pale, cold sweat dripping from their foreheads as they clenched their fists in silence.
The entire area was dead silent.
No one even dared to breathe loudly, the entire atmosphere completely under Xu Shaochen’s control.
“Ring, ring, ring…”
Just then, the sound of a phone ringing sliced through the eerie silence.
Everyone’s eyes were drawn to the phone on the ground. It was Yellow Hair’s, and the screen was already cracked.
Seeing the caller ID.
Yellow Hair’s face regained some color as he grabbed the phone and screamed, “Boss Meng! Save me! Please, save me right now!”
A moment later, Yellow Hair hung up and started laughing hysterically. He glared at Xu Shaochen, gritting his teeth as he said:
“You bastard, you’re dead. You’re absolutely dead. Think you won’t let me see tomorrow’s sun? Ha! You better start worrying about your own life, hahahaha…”
