Chapter Index

“Sister-in-law, what’s there to talk about with him for so long?”

Seeing An Miaozhu come out, the already impatient Han Chen grumbled.

An Miaozhu frowned. “It’s because of your mess. Do you even know who he is? How dare you provoke him? Don’t you know that your father works for him?”

“Impossible!” Han Chen scoffed. His father was the chairman of the Xu Corporation’s Stick Nation branch.

An Miaozhu sneered. “He’s the young chairman of Xu Corporation.”

Han Chen’s face froze. He swallowed hard. “Sister-in-law, please don’t tell my dad or my brother about this, or I’m done for.”

“Your dad won’t find out, but I can’t hide it from your brother. After all, 50 million U.S. dollars can’t just disappear.”

An Miaozhu said indifferently, thinking to herself, ‘This fool. Not only did you lose 50 million U.S. dollars, but even your sister-in-law was played by him.’

And played not just once, but several times.

Han Chen sighed. “I’ll talk to my brother myself. Just make sure my dad doesn’t find out, or I’ll be skinned alive.”

Although he still harbored some resentment towards Xu Shaochen, there was nothing he could do. After all, he was up against someone far more powerful.

He was even somewhat relieved that Xu Shaochen didn’t know who he was. Otherwise, his dad would be in real trouble.

“By the way, why are you holding that worthless cup? Throw it away.”

Seeing the teacup in Han Chen’s hand, An Miaozhu frowned.

“No way. I spent 50 million U.S. dollars on this cup. At least it’s a memento, some form of consolation.”

Han Chen stroked the teacup, speaking miserably as if it were a cherished treasure.

    An Miaozhu: “…”

Doesn’t he realize that keeping the cup only makes things more aggravating?

That cup is a constant reminder of losing 50 million U.S. dollars.

    Evening.

Lin Kai was discharged from the hospital and introduced his girlfriend Shanshan to his acquaintances and friends.

He made sure that everyone knew Shanshan was his girlfriend.

Everyone was surprised. Since when did Lin Kai become so eager to make his relationship public?

Meanwhile, the conflict between the Zheng family and the Lin family was growing increasingly tense. The two families had already started clashing in business.

Lin Yao was still in prison and would at least stay there until the end of the week, waiting for things to cool down before being released.

In short, the Lin family was currently going through a tough time.

    The next day.

    Xu Shaochen was having breakfast.

The food had been specifically ordered by his bodyguard from outside.

Suddenly, Long Yi ran in to tell him that Ye Zhaoyun wanted to invite him for morning tea.

“That old fox must be eager to press me on the investment matter.”

Xu Shaochen wiped his mouth, looked at the few steamed buns left on the table, and then got up, ready to go to Ye Zhaoyun’s place for something better.

As the chief executive of Hong Kong, even a simple morning tea hosted by Ye Zhaoyun wouldn’t be lacking in quality, right?

He took a car and headed straight to Ye Zhaoyun’s home.

“Mr. Xu, the master has instructed that you can go straight in when you arrive, no need to announce your presence.”

The servant at Ye Zhaoyun’s home warmly and courteously led Xu Shaochen inside.

When Xu Shaochen arrived at the dining room, he was surprised to find that only Ye Zhaoyun was there.

“Mr. Xu, you’re here! Please, have a seat. If you don’t eat these soon, they’ll get cold. Business, like eating, should be dealt with while it’s hot.”

Ye Zhaoyun spoke with a double meaning, subtly reminding Xu Shaochen about the investment he mentioned a few days ago.

“You wanted the authorities cracked down on. I took care of it. Now, it’s time to talk about the investment, isn’t it?”

“Mr. Ye, is it just you at home today? Where are your wife and son?”

Xu Shaochen sat down without hesitation, asking out of curiosity.

“My wife is out, and as for that worthless son of mine, he’s still lazing around. No need to bother with him.”

When mentioning his son, it was clear that Ye Zhaoyun wasn’t in high spirits—evidently, another failed project.

Xu Shaochen nodded and didn’t ask further, instead turning his attention to the morning tea on the table.

“Mr. Ye, you seem to live quite a frugal life.”

Looking at the food on the table, Xu Shaochen smirked. In retrospect, he should have finished those crab roe steamed buns back home.

After all, they were made with crab roe!

But here? Only fried dough sticks, soy milk, and a couple of plates of pickled vegetables. They dare call this morning tea?

Ye Zhaoyun sighed. “You may not know this, but even the wealthiest households sometimes stretch their supplies. I’m afraid today’s meal won’t be as satisfying as what you’re used to at home, so please bear with it.”

Xu Shaochen was speechless. “You’re kidding me, right? If you’ve never taken a bribe, I’ll take your last name.”

Of course, though he was cursing in his heart, Xu Shaochen maintained a respectful expression. “Mr. Ye, your dedication is commendable. Our nation needs more officials like you who work for the people.”

In truth, that statement was nonsense. If every official was like Ye Zhaoyun, the country would be in chaos.

“No, no, it’s nothing. I’m just doing my duty, not letting down the party and the people’s trust.”

Ye Zhaoyun responded in bureaucratic terms. Anyone who didn’t know better might really think he was upstanding and incorruptible.

Xu Shaochen didn’t want to continue the small talk and got straight to the point. “Mr. Ye, I recently invested in establishing a company called Kai Ge in Hong Kong. It deals in food and internet services. I hope Mr. Ye can look after it.”

In other words, I’ve already invested. You don’t need to remind me anymore.

Ye Zhaoyun laughed. “Rest assured, Chairman Xu. We will give your investments all the favorable policies they deserve in Hong Kong.”

    “Ring ring ring…”

Suddenly, Ye Zhaoyun’s phone rang. Glancing at it, his expression changed. He then said to Xu Shaochen, “Chairman Xu, please continue eating. I need to take this call.”

With that said, before Xu Shaochen could respond, Ye Zhaoyun quickly left with his phone.

Watching Ye Zhaoyun rush out, Xu Shaochen smirked. In that much of a hurry? Is his mistress about to give birth?

Xu Shaochen lost interest in nibbling on the unappealing food. He moved to the living room, sat down on the sofa, and picked up a newspaper to read.

“Who gave you permission to touch my things?”

At that moment, a voice belligerently entered his ears. Xu Shaochen looked up to see a young man in pajamas lazily walking down the stairs.

He must be the so-called worthless son of Ye Zhaoyun.

    “I’m waiting for Mr. Ye.”

Out of courtesy, Xu Shaochen explained, flashing a smile at him before continuing to read the newspaper.

“Damn it! Can’t you understand plain words? People like you come begging my dad for favors all the time! What makes you think you can just touch my family’s newspaper?”

The young man hurried down the stairs, snatched the newspaper out of Xu Shaochen’s hands, and arrogantly glared at him, eyebrows furrowed.
