Chapter Index

    Ten minutes later.

    Police Station.

    “Name.”

    “Xu Shaochen.”

    “Age.”

    “Twenty-one.”

    “Occupation.”

“Chairman of Chen Yu Group, Chairman of Lotus Charity, Director of Tianfeng Group, Director of Zheng Group, Junior Director of Xu Corporation…”

Hearing this long list of prestigious titles, the two young police officers taking Xu Shaochen’s statement exchanged puzzled looks, each gulping nervously.

The two exchanged another glance, then one of them calmly walked out of the interrogation room.

Once outside the interrogation room, the officer’s calm demeanor instantly disappeared as his face turned pale and sweat dripped from his forehead. He hurriedly sprinted towards his superior’s office.

    Bang!

Without waiting to knock, he burst into the office: “Chief Zhao, we have a problem! We just brought in someone really important. The guy in the fight is named Xu Shaochen.”

“Xu Shao-what? You didn’t even knock before coming in?” Chief Zhao frowned, clearly displeased.

The officer didn’t respond and just handed his phone over, showing the news articles and Baidu page about Xu Shaochen.

Chief Zhao took the phone, his expression shifting slightly before returning to calm. He handed the phone back: “So what? Stay calm. Don’t panic. Just follow the normal protocol and continue with the interrogation.”

    “Yes, Chief Zhao.”

As the officer left the office, he was filled with admiration for his chief. No wonder he was the chief — his composure was truly impressive.

But as soon as the officer exited, the previously composed Chief Zhao immediately broke into a cold sweat. Grabbing his phone with trembling hands, he dialed a number.

“Chief Ye, I need to report something…”

Meanwhile, in the hallway of the police station.

Liu Rushuang was anxiously waiting for Xu Shaochen. The middle-aged woman was there too, along with her husband.

“You little slut, your boyfriend is doomed. Get ready to see him rot in jail!”

The middle-aged woman sneered at Liu Rushuang, clearly confident in her words.

Liu Rushuang ignored her, knowing that exchanging insults at a place like this would do no good.

“Husband, look at how badly I got beaten. You can’t let him get away with this.”

Seeing that Liu Rushuang didn’t retort, the middle-aged woman continued to whine to her husband.

Her husband’s face darkened: “Don’t worry. I’ve already made arrangements. Once he’s in jail, he’ll suffer.”

“Hmph! Did you hear that, you little slut? Do you even know who my husband is? One call from him and your boyfriend will be done for!”

Puffed up with pride, the middle-aged woman glared at Liu Rushuang, already imagining the terrible fate that awaited Xu Shaochen.

But in the next moment, the couple was stunned.

Chief Zhao, with utmost politeness, escorted Xu Shaochen out, apologizing all the way: “Mr. Xu, I sincerely apologize. We’ve thoroughly investigated the matter, and it’s clear that the fault lies with the dog owner. Sorry for the trouble we caused.”

“Chief Zhao… What’s going on? How could you just let him go?”

Seeing this, the middle-aged couple was instantly alarmed. If Xu Shaochen was let go, had the middle-aged woman taken that beating for nothing?

    “Shut up!”

Chief Zhao snapped, glaring coldly at the middle-aged woman: “You let your dog injure someone first, and that someone was a pregnant woman. You’re lucky they aren’t pressing charges.”

“Also, the ordinance banning large and medium-sized dogs in urban areas had been in place for over a year, and you still broke it. What do you take us law enforcers for, decorations?”

He was furious with the middle-aged woman. When he reported the case, he got a severe scolding from his superiors.

The main issue was that large black dog. The regulation had been issued so long ago, and yet people in his jurisdiction were still keeping such dangerous dogs. This clearly showed his poor management and failure to enforce orders strictly. Moreover, if Xu Shaochen’s pregnant girlfriend had been injured, it could have caused serious trouble for the entire city of Yijing.

Recalling how he had just been berated like a lowly subordinate, Chief Zhao now desperately wanted to slap the woman across the face.

If it weren’t for her breaking the law and keeping a large dog, none of this would have happened. “I…” The woman wanted to say something, but her husband, realizing the seriousness of the situation, grabbed her arm and offered an apologetic smile to Chief Zhao:

“Chief Zhao, I’m so sorry. It’s my fault for not keeping an eye on my wife. I’m often away on business, so I didn’t know she had such a big dog at home. We’ll pay whatever fine is required. Really sorry about all this.”

Chief Zhao’s face remained stern as he nodded, but then he turned with a smile towards Xu Shaochen: “Mr. Xu, I hope this small incident won’t affect your perception of Yijing. I also hope it won’t dampen your mood during your visit.”

“Chief Zhao, I sincerely hope there won’t be a next time. My girlfriend is pregnant, and if something had happened today… even I don’t know what I would’ve done.”

Xu Shaochen said this impassively, holding Liu Rushuang’s hand as they left the police station briskly.

Watching Xu Shaochen walk away, Chief Zhao let out a long sigh of relief, his back drenched in cold sweat.

“Chief Zhao, if I may ask, who exactly is that guy?”

The middle-aged woman’s husband timidly approached Chief Zhao, offering him a cigarette.

“Heh, you should be glad that he didn’t hold a grudge against you. If he did, you wouldn’t stand a chance.”

    “His name is Xu Shaochen.”

Chief Zhao gave him a once-over, smiling without warmth before turning and walking away.

“Xu Shaochen? Xu Shaochen… Xu Shaochen!”

The middle-aged woman’s husband stood frozen, repeating the name over and over until it suddenly clicked. His face turned pale, fear and relief washing over him.

“Husband, are we just going to let this slide? Didn’t I take that beating for nothing? No, we can’t let him get away with this!”

Completely unaware of her husband’s change in demeanor, the middle-aged woman wasn’t ready to let Xu Shaochen go.

    Slap!

Her husband immediately slapped her across the face, speaking coldly: “Shut up! I’m telling you, today’s matter ends here. If you ever see him again, avoid him. If something like this happens again, we’re getting a divorce. I’m not dying because of you!”

    “You… you hit me?”

The middle-aged woman clutched her face, staring at her husband in disbelief.

“If I don’t hit you, you won’t learn.”

With those cold words, her husband stormed out of the police station without looking back.
