Chapter Index

“Sorry, I’m not one to easily believe others, let alone trust some bullshit oath. So, let’s do something more practical.”

Xu Shaochen looked at Liang Huan with disdain.

“You… What do you want?” Zhao Li stammered.

Xu Shaochen smiled and spat the half-burnt cigar from his mouth onto the ground. “You’re both big shots from Jingcheng. I can let you go, but for my own sake, I need a little insurance.”

“What kind of insurance do you want?” Liang Huan asked, his face pale.

Xu Shaochen waved, and Long Yi quickly stepped forward to hand him a camera.

Xu Shaochen pointed the camera at the two of them and switched it to recording mode. “Why don’t you both tell me about the shady deeds your families have done over the years? I’d love to hear the glorious history behind your family fortunes.”

“Remember, I’m talking about your families, not you personally. Got it?”

These two wouldn’t be sent to handle the gold mine unless they held some significant status in their respective families.

You could compare them to Chen Ju, or rather, the eldest Young Master of the Chen Family, who’s the legitimate successor.

Even if these two aren’t as highly ranked as Chen Ju in the Chen Family, they can’t be far off, which means they must know a few family secrets or taboos.

Mei Liangxin finally understood. So this is what Xu Shaochen meant by a better solution.

And indeed, exposing their families’ dirty laundry would be far more valuable than airing their own.

If the video went public, the first thing their families would do is silence them for leaking the information.

    “This… This is impossible!”

Both Zhao Li and Liang Huan’s faces changed dramatically when they heard this. If they did as Xu Shaochen asked, wouldn’t he have a hold over their families forever? Plus, if this got out, their families would never let them off the hook.

“Judging by your expressions, it seems you know something. That makes me feel better. Go on, speak.”

Xu Shaochen’s smile grew even brighter.

“No way. Pick another condition. I can tell you about our own affairs…”

    “Bang!”

Before Zhao Li could finish speaking, Xu Shaochen kicked him in the face. “Do you think you’re in a position to negotiate? You have two choices: do as I say, or get fed to the fish.”

Both Zhao Li and Liang Huan hesitated. They didn’t want to betray their families, but they didn’t want to die either.

“Fourth Young Master Zhao, Second Young Master Liang. There’s no guarantee you’ll inherit your family’s legacy, but your lives are your own. Shouldn’t you at least think of yourselves?”

“Oh, and maybe I’m underestimating your positions. But think about it. If you die, there’s no chance you’ll ever be the family head. Why bother?”

“As long as you cooperate and give me some insurance, I’ll even apologize for tonight’s events. Who knows, we might even become friends. I could lend a hand in your fight for the family head position.”

Xu Shaochen softened his tone, fearing that pushing too hard could backfire.

Hearing this, the two men looked at him suspiciously, clearly not believing a word of it.

The battle for family headship was vicious. What could a local from Jiangzhou like Xu Shaochen possibly do to help?

Ruthless and cunning? Who cares? Competing for the family headship is about money, connections, and which candidate can bring the most value to the family. It’s not about who can pull off some assassinations.

Noticing their expressions, Xu Shaochen chuckled. “You two don’t know my full name yet, do you? Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Xu Shaochen.”

    “Xu Shaochen!”

Liang Huan and Zhao Li both turned pale, looking at him in disbelief. “The same Xu Shaochen from the Xu Corporation?!”

“That’s right. To be honest, if I weren’t caught up in some trouble with the Kong Family recently, I wouldn’t even bother with you two.”

“At worst, I could kill you both and flee abroad. After all, the Xu Corporation’s headquarters is overseas.”

“You might have some power here in the Mainland, but can you chase me across the globe? The moment I’m abroad, it’s the Xu Corporation’s domain.”

Xu Shaochen casually said, but this was all just a bluff to scare them.

If it weren’t absolutely necessary, he had no plans of leaving his home to live overseas.

But Zhao Li and Liang Huan didn’t know that.

All they knew was that what Xu Shaochen said was true. Many of their family elders held government posts and often spoke about how powerful the Xu Corporation’s influence abroad was.

So, if Xu Shaochen did kill them and escape, they would be as good as dead.

And now, after learning Xu Shaochen’s identity, his earlier proposal suddenly seemed much more tempting.

Xu Shaochen had money and plenty of ways to make more.

If Xu Shaochen really helped, they just might have a shot at competing for the family headship.

Most importantly, they wouldn’t have to die.

For a moment, their expressions fluctuated between uncertainty and temptation.

“Well, gentlemen, have you made up your minds? Chen Ju is a close friend of mine. Think about it. With my backing, and Chen Ju’s support, wouldn’t that make your fight for the family headship a piece of cake?”

“All I’m asking for is a little insurance. In fact, this would only deepen our friendship, don’t you think?”

Xu Shaochen threw out Chen Ju’s name. Although he’d only met him a handful of times, that didn’t stop him from using it to boost his image.

On the ground, Liang Huan and Zhao Li exchanged glances. They could see the ambition in each other’s eyes.

Clearly, both were tempted. After all, becoming the head of the family was no small feat. Many direct descendants had their eyes on that spot.

    “Alright, we agree.”

After their initial struggles, the two reluctantly agreed.

They both thought Xu Shaochen made a valid point.

If they died today, their families’ success would mean nothing to them.

But if they managed to become the family head, things would be different.

Their lives were their own, but their families might not be. However, if they agreed to Xu Shaochen’s terms,

Not only would their lives be their own, but perhaps their families would be too. How could they resist that temptation?

Xu Shaochen smiled slightly and restarted the camera, pointing it at the two. “Gentlemen, please begin your performance. This is the first step in securing our friendship.”

    Chapter Summary

Xu Shaochen threatens Zhao Li and Liang Huan, demanding they expose their families' dirty secrets as insurance for their release. The men are hesitant, fearing family retribution but not wanting to die. Eventually, after learning Xu Shaochen’s identity and his ties to the Xu Corporation, they reluctantly agree. Xu Shaochen sweetens the deal by suggesting that aiding him might help them in their quest for their family’s headship, further manipulating them into complying.
