Chapter 647: That’s Just How Shameless I Am
by xennovelHearing Mei Liangxin say that.
Xu Shaochen thought of the person who sent the coffin to him.
If it’s revenge on him, they might really start with the people close to him.
After all, if the goal was just to kill him, there wouldn’t be any need to send a coffin and startle him.
Xu Shaochen hadn’t taken this matter to heart at first because he wasn’t afraid of anyone targeting him.
But if they went after the people around him, he truly couldn’t account for everything.
It seems like this trouble needs to be solved first.
Thinking this, Xu Shaochen looked at Mei Liangxin.
“Why… why are you looking at me like that? Let me tell you, I absolutely refuse to be bait!”
Mei Liangxin shivered, crossing his arms, and resolutely rejected Xu Shaochen.
Bait missions were always the most dangerous—the bait often gets swallowed by the prey, and then the prey escapes.
Xu Shaochen shrugged when he heard that: “Okay, in that case, never mind.”
“Phew~” Mei Liangxin let out a long sigh, smiling at Xu Shaochen while saying, “I knew you wouldn’t be cruel enough to risk my life.”
“But, maybe those people really were watching you last night. What if one day you’re walking down the street and get run over, or someone shoots you dead? The only thing I could do then is take care of Liu Ying for you.”
Xu Shaochen seemed to be talking to himself, but with each word, Mei Liangxin’s expression grew darker.
Xu Shaochen gave him a sidelong glance and continued musing: “How should I take care of Liu Ying? Should I find her a good man to marry? Or maybe I’ll send her home and let her family arrange a high-status rich man for her?”
“Shut up! Alright, damn it, I’ll be the bait, okay?!”
Mei Liangxin scowled, a look of irritation on his face as he conceded.
“Sigh, no, I still need to think of another way. How can I let a brother risk his life?”
Xu Shaochen shook his head, firmly rejecting Mei Liangxin’s offer.
“Big Brother, I’m begging you! This is what I’m supposed to do. I volunteer. I actually like being bait.”
Mei Liangxin looked at Xu Shaochen, nearly on the verge of tears.
Damn, are those people brain-damaged? If it’s revenge against Xu Shaochen, just go after him—why target innocent bystanders like us?!
Xu Shaochen said incredulously: “Volunteer to be bait? Impossible. There’s no one that shameless in society today.”
“Wrong! There is! I’m that shameless. Satisfied now?” Mei Liangxin gritted his teeth like he wanted to bite straight through them.
“Sigh… since you’ve gone this far, if I were to refuse, it’d just seem inhumane of me. I’ll reluctantly accept.”
Xu Shaochen wore a deeply conflicted expression, eventually letting out a hopeless sigh.
Mei Liangxin’s lips twitched. This guy is such an actor—his entire being is a drama performance.
But when he remembered he’d be the bait, his face immediately turned gloomy.
Not being the bait is dangerous, but being the bait is dangerous too!
Make one wrong move, and you’re just offering yourself to the enemy on a silver platter.
“Don’t worry, I’ve got it all planned out. With me here, nothing will go wrong.”
Xu Shaochen stood up, sidestepped his desk, and walked over to Mei Liangxin, giving him a reassuring pat on the shoulder.
Mei Liangxin looked up at him, his eyes pleading: “How are you going to prepare? Give me some reassurance.”
“Hmm…” Xu Shaochen was silent momentarily before saying, “At the very least, I’ll get you a nice coffin, made from premium golden silkwood. Not too shabby, right?”
“Get lost!”
Mei Liangxin’s face darkened to the color of charcoal, spewing curses.
“If those people really were following you last night, and they didn’t make their move then, they’re definitely going to act again today.”
“The reason they didn’t take action last night is probably because they didn’t expect you to go to the hospital. They wouldn’t dare make a move inside the hospital unless they’re ready to die with you.”
“Here’s what we’ll do: Zhang Wei and Zhao Qing will stay in the hospital. That way, the enemy will focus on you and prioritize targeting you first.”
Hearing this, Mei Liangxin rolled his eyes: “Well, I guess I should consider myself honored then.”
“If you need to see it that way, then sure, it’s no problem.” Xu Shaochen nodded, continuing: “Today, I’ll have people secretly protecting you. As soon as the enemy shows themselves, we’ll wrap the whole thing up.”
“I’m telling you, I’m only agreeing to be the bait because I trust you. Don’t screw it up—I don’t even have a son yet!”
Mei Liangxin’s face showed genuine concern. After all, the unknown factors were just too many.
“Don’t worry, I’d never joke around with your life.” Xu Shaochen looked at him seriously, clearly trying to give him some confidence.
Mei Liangxin, however, only felt more uneasy: “You saying that just makes me even more nervous.”
………………
At the apartment.
“Continue with last night’s mission tonight. If they have no sickness or injury, they won’t stay in the hospital forever. Once they’re alone, take the shot.”
Zhou Yun addressed eight blond, blue-eyed foreigners standing in front of him.
He had hired three mercenary teams, each consisting of eight men, totaling twenty-four people.
This apartment, with his current room as the center, was entirely rented out for safety reasons, including the floors above and below.
The other two teams were scattered across the two floors, primarily responsible for his protection.
Only this team was currently tasked with offensive action.
“OK, you’re the boss. Whatever you say.”
The squad leader didn’t reject the order. They were mercenaries making money—they had to follow Zhou Yun’s commands to earn the rest of their payment.
“Try not to use guns. If you can eliminate them without making a sound, that’s best.”
Zhou Yun emphasized once more. After all, gunfire was too loud, and criminal investigations involving firearms were far more thorough than regular homicide investigations.
“Boss, we’re mercenaries, not assassins. If you want silent kills, you should hire hitmen instead.”
The squad leader made what he thought was a clever joke. After all, many foreigners liked to think they were humorous but often couldn’t read the room.
Zhou Yun shot him a blank look: “Really? Then maybe I should just kick you guys to the curb and hire some hitmen instead.”
Of course, Zhou Yun was just retorting; he had no intention of hiring hitmen.
Hitmen had laughably poor combat abilities. How could they possibly offer him adequate protection?
After all, this wasn’t some TV drama. Hitmen couldn’t fly through the air or fight ten men at once.
The squad leader gave a sheepish laugh and shrugged, deciding to keep quiet. Inwardly, however, he muttered about how humorless their employer was.
Little did he know, Zhou Yun was in no mood to joke around—he was entirely focused on making Xu Shaochen suffer.
“Alright, get going and get the job done. Don’t lose track of them. Have the second team leader come in here.”
Zhou Yun waved his hand, dismissing them.
