Chapter Index

“You’re not afraid of me? Then give it a try.”

Facing the enraged Lin Xiang, Xu Shaochen remained unusually calm. He looked at him with a smirk that hinted at mockery.

Money gives men courage. When a person has money, they naturally become more confident. Xu Shaochen was a prime example of this—he was so confident now that it bordered on arrogance.

“Young man, judging by your age, you’re probably still in university. The world isn’t as black and white as you think. Are you sure you want to reject my offer?” Zhao Jie, growing impatient with Xu Shaochen’s refusal, spoke with a tone of blatant threat.

Lin Xiang also sneered as he glanced at Xu Shaochen, full of disdain. “Damn, you’re just a broke kid, and now you think you’re hot stuff? How dare you challenge me? You must be dreaming!”

“Threatening me?” Xu Shaochen chuckled lightly and looked at Zhao Jie with an expression that was neither a full smile nor a frown.

Zhao Jie furrowed his brows slightly, then smiled too. “I never said that, but if that’s how you want to see it, I can’t stop you. After all, accidents happen every day. Who’s to say what could happen to you, right?”

“Fine, I’ll make a call.” Xu Shaochen nodded, then took out his phone.

When Zhao Jie saw this, his expression turned serious. He glanced at Lin Xiang with a questioning look.

Lin Xiang sneered again and said contemptuously, “Brother-in-law, this guy’s just pretending. He can’t even scrape together enough for surgery, and you think he has any connections?”

Hearing this, Zhao Jie relaxed, crossing his legs as he leisurely lit a cigarette.

Since Lin Xiang said so, Zhao Jie felt there was nothing to worry about. He thought Xu Shaochen was likely a country bumpkin who thought knowing a few village officials made him important.

“Jenny, right? You mentioned before that I could call this number if I ever ran into trouble?”

Xu Shaochen had dialed the number of Jenny, the professional manager. He couldn’t believe that his grandfather, the world’s richest man, who had business ventures all over the globe, wouldn’t have some connections in the country, even after his passing.

“Yes, Mr. Xu. Are you in some kind of trouble? Could you describe it in detail?”

Xu Shaochen glanced at Zhao Jie, who responded with a disdainful smile, his eyes betraying the look one might give a clown’s performance. He even gestured mockingly, inviting Xu Shaochen to continue.

“Well, it’s like this…” Xu Shaochen briefly explained the situation.

“Understood, Mr. Xu. We’ll resolve this as quickly as possible. Please wait a moment.”

    “Alright.”

Xu Shaochen replied and then hung up the phone.

“So, you made your call. Do you have anything else you want to say?” Zhao Jie looked at Xu Shaochen with a small smile, confident he had the upper hand.

Xu Shaochen shook his head. “No, I just want to see how you two end up.”

“Hmph, arrogant fool.” Zhao Jie nearly laughed out loud in anger. He had never met someone as audacious as Xu Shaochen.

Who did this guy think he was? The grandson of the country’s leader? The grandson of the world’s richest man? How utterly ridiculous.

“Ten minutes. I’ll give you ten minutes to reconsider. Nod your head, take the hundred grand, and leave, or don’t blame me for bullying a kid.” Zhao Jie checked his watch, then held up a finger in Xu Shaochen’s direction.

Xu Shaochen didn’t respond. Instead, he relaxed, leaning back against the sofa.

    “Bang!”

A few minutes later, the office door was forcefully pushed open from the outside. A middle-aged man in his forties, wearing a white lab coat and glasses, hurriedly walked in.

“Dean, why are you here? Don’t worry, I’ll handle this…” Seeing the middle-aged man, Zhao Jie immediately stood up and quickly approached, a smile on his face.

    “Smack!”

Before Zhao Jie could finish his sentence, the man slapped him across the face, his eyes red as he scolded, “Handle this? You can’t handle *anything*!”

“Dean, you…” Zhao Jie was stunned, feeling the burning pain on his face. It took him a moment to realize what had happened.

Lin Xiang also looked like he’d seen a ghost. His brother-in-law had just been slapped by the dean? But the man ignored the two and hurried over to Xu Shaochen, speaking nervously, “Mr. Xu, I deeply apologize. Our hospital has let you down. I guarantee on my honor that this was the fault of a few bad apples at our hospital. I assure you they will be punished severely, and we will give you a satisfactory explanation.”

At this moment, cold sweat was seeping from the dean’s forehead. He was so furious with Zhao Jie and Lin Xiang that he could have killed them. They’d messed with the wrong person! The higher-ups had personally called to demand an internal investigation at the hospital, and they specifically mentioned holding Lin Xiang legally responsible. He was nearly scared to death.

Boom! Zhao Jie and Lin Xiang felt like they’d been struck by lightning. Their minds went blank as they stared in disbelief at the scene before them.

Both their faces turned pale, their bodies trembling uncontrollably. They weren’t idiots; seeing this, they knew they had kicked an iron plate. Maybe even an alloy one.

“Dean, you’re being too kind. I’m just an ordinary person. How you handle this is up to you; it has nothing to do with me.” Xu Shaochen looked at the dean calmly, once again feeling the allure of wealth.

When money reaches a certain level, it causes a qualitative change—this change takes the form of elevated status and power.

    This feeling was truly addictive.

The dean wiped the sweat from his forehead, nodding repeatedly. “Yes, yes, you’re absolutely right, Mr. Xu. We’ll be in contact with the judicial system to handle this case as soon as possible. Also, to thank you for helping us uproot the bad elements in our hospital, we’ve already moved your mother to a VIP ward. It’s Room 102. Her surgery will be scheduled soon.”

    “Thud!”

Hearing this, both Lin Xiang and Zhao Jie felt as if the world had ended. Their legs gave out, and they collapsed to the floor, their faces as pale as death.

“Vice President Zhao, keep your hundred grand. I’m not interested.”

Xu Shaochen stood up and looked down at Zhao Jie and Lin Xiang, smiling coolly. He adjusted his collar and then walked out of the office.

“Dean, please have mercy! I’ve worked diligently at this hospital for years. I may not have great accomplishments, but I’ve worked hard!”

Zhao Jie clung to the dean’s leg, looking up at him pitifully, tears and snot running down his face.

“Hmph! What do you mean by that? Save your excuses for the police.” The dean was already filled with anger at these two, and he gave them no mercy. “And don’t even think about trying to pull strings. The higher-ups themselves made the call. You two screwed up and dragged the hospital down with you. Unbelievable! Hmph!”

With that, the dean stormed out of the office. He still had to deal with the fallout from all of this.

Hearing this, Zhao Jie and Lin Xiang knew they were done for. Despair and regret flooded their hearts. If they had known, they wouldn’t have dared provoke Xu Shaochen, even if they had a hundred times the courage!

Lin Xiang couldn’t help cursing. Why the hell did this guy pretend to be broke if he was so damn powerful? It’s like he was just setting us up to fail!
