Chapter Index

“Alright, Uncle Wang, there’s no need to put on an act in front of me anymore. Even if you beat her to death, it won’t change anything. Let’s just talk about breaking off the engagement.”

Chen Ju interrupted Wang Xian, not because he felt sorry for Wang Yao, but because he was getting impatient.

Wang Xian’s expression froze, the raised feather duster stopping in mid-air as he looked at Chen Ju. “Nephew, as long as you don’t break off the engagement, we can discuss anything. How about that?”

“Uncle Wang, as long as we can break off the engagement, I’m willing to discuss anything too,” Chen Ju said.

Xu Shaochen crossed his legs, watching the scene with amusement, quietly being a spectator.

Wang Xian’s face clouded over as he spoke with heartfelt sincerity, “Nephew, if you break off the engagement, our Wang Family will lose all face!”

“Uncle Wang, one shouldn’t be too selfish. So many people have witnessed tonight’s events. If I don’t break off the engagement, it’s our Chen Family who will lose face.”

Chen Ju raised his voice, clearly getting a bit heated.

    “Slam!”

A bald man stood up angrily, glaring at Chen Ju. “Chen Ju! Let me tell you, breaking off the engagement is impossible. Our Wang Family can compensate in other ways, but you’d better forget about breaking it off!”

“Oh? You don’t think that if I’m unwilling, your Wang Family can just tie me up, do you?” Chen Ju sneered, dismissing the threat.

The Wang Family didn’t want to break off the engagement. If they did, they might face an even worse situation than now, becoming the biggest laughingstock in all of Jingcheng.

Chen Ju had to break off the engagement, otherwise the Chen Family would face the same situation as the Wang Family, and he, Chen Ju, would become Jingcheng’s most famous cuckold.

“Alright, Chen Ju, let’s go. We’ve delivered the message, that’s enough. In this situation, even if you unilaterally break off the engagement, no one would blame you. Why bother arguing with them here?”

Watching these people go back and forth like they were haggling over vegetables, Xu Shaochen impatiently picked at his ear. This wasn’t quite the scene he had imagined.

As soon as he finished speaking, everyone from the Wang Family looked at him with murderous glares.

Because what Xu Shaochen said was correct.

Wang Yao’s hair incident came first, so Chen Ju breaking off the engagement was a normal, honorable reaction. Continuing the marriage would be the real joke.

But this didn’t align with the Wang Family’s interests.

“Uncle Wang, you heard what my friend said. So I’m not here to negotiate with you today, I’m just here to inform you.”

“I think it’s time for me to leave, and I won’t be coming back in the future.”

Chen Ju spoke calmly, then stood up to leave as he finished speaking.

Throughout the entire time, he hadn’t spared Wang Yao a single glance.

“Why are you all looking at me like that? I just spoke the truth. Besides, Chen Ju is my friend, of course I’m considering things from his perspective. Did you expect me to help you trick him instead?”

Xu Shaochen looked at the Wang Family members and smiled indifferently, feeling like this was no different from being surrounded by a mob with clubs.

“Kid, the business between our Wang Family and the Chen Family is none of your concern as an outsider. A dog catching mice, meddling in affairs that don’t concern you – be careful, it might shorten your life.”

A young man looked at Xu Shaochen and spoke through gritted teeth, the last four words clearly not hiding his threat.

The others also looked coldly at Xu Shaochen.

“Young Master Xu, let’s go,” Chen Ju said to Xu Shaochen.

“For my friend’s sake, I won’t hold this against you. Otherwise, every single one of you here would have to kneel when speaking to me.”

Xu Shaochen looked around casually, dropping this line nonchalantly before leaving with Chen Ju.

    “Stop right there!”

Just a few steps out, Wang Xian’s cold shout came from behind.

Chen Ju raised an eyebrow, turning back to look coldly at Wang Xian. “Uncle Wang, if you keep causing trouble, it’s going to get tiresome.”

“I’m not talking to you,” Wang Xian looked coldly at Xu Shaochen. “I’m talking to him.”

“Who does he think our Wang Family is? Some wet-behind-the-ears kid dares to offend us so casually. If we let him walk away like this, won’t every Tom, Dick, and Harry think they can ride roughshod over our Wang Family in the future?”

Chen Ju’s brows furrowed into a ‘川’ shape. “Uncle Wang, what do you mean?”

“Nothing much. It’s just that letting him leave like this doesn’t sit well with our Wang Family. Have him kowtow and apologize before leaving, or leave a finger behind to remember this lesson.”

Wang Xian spoke in a cold tone, then shouted, “Come here!”

    “Thump, thump, thump, thump…”

Two tall bodyguards walked in, bowing respectfully to Wang Xian. “Master.”

“Uncle Wang, are you targeting me?” Chen Ju’s face darkened.

Wang Xian replied coolly, “Nephew, I’m afraid you’ve misunderstood. I’m not stopping you from leaving, so how could I be targeting you?”

“Wang Xian, you’re really regressing as you age. He came with me, so he’ll leave with me!” Chen Ju was almost laughing from anger.

Wang Xian revealed his true intentions: “That’s not impossible. As long as you don’t break off the engagement, I’ll politely see your friend out.”

He didn’t dare do anything to Chen Ju because he feared the Chen Family.

But targeting Xu Shaochen didn’t come with as much pressure.

In other words, a nobody like Xu Shaochen was just a tool he was using. His real target had always been Chen Ju.

Xu Shaochen was stunned, not expecting to have become a mere tool. He looked at Wang Xian and said with a half-smile:

“Wang, did you ask for my opinion before using me as a tool?”

“A nobody should know their place. If you don’t have the ability to flip the table, then keep your mouth shut. If it weren’t for Chen Ju, you wouldn’t even qualify to enter our Wang Family’s gate.”

Wang Xian spoke casually, his words carrying a sense of superiority and mockery towards Xu Shaochen.

    “Ha.”

Xu Shaochen laughed, then slowly retracted his smile. Looking at Wang Xian, he said word by word:

“Originally, if you had just let us leave like that, nothing would have happened tonight.”

“Since you insist on running into the gun’s muzzle, I’ll show you my table-flipping skills.”

“Oh, by the way, when I flip tables, I tend to do it with a lot of force. People close to the table usually end up getting crushed to death. Like you, for instance.”

Chen Ju’s face remained expressionless, but he sighed inwardly. The Wang Family really was courting death.

Wang Xian didn’t speak. A young man from the Wang Family stepped forward, looking down his nose at Xu Shaochen and said:

“Utterly ridiculous. Who do you think you are? Just a worm who doesn’t know his place. Don’t think that just because you’ve latched onto a few second-generation rich kids, you have the right to talk to us as equals.”

“Trash like you from the bottom of society should stay in the gutter. Now you dare to threaten our Wang Family? Why don’t you take a look in the mirror? You’re not worthy!”

“Indeed, this is the funniest joke I’ve heard all year. An ant that doesn’t know the height of the sky.”

Others also chimed in, looking at Xu Shaochen with mocking gazes.
