Chapter Index

    The Li family.

    In the Living Room.

All of the Li family’s uncles were gathered here.

Li Tianming was frowning deeply as if he had encountered some difficult problem.

“Big Brother, this isn’t just my opinion. This is everyone’s opinion.”

Watching Li Tianming’s tightly furrowed brows, Li Tianrun raised the corner of his lips in a smug smile.

“Yes, Tianming. Of all the families in Jingcheng, only our Li family has yet to decide on the position of heir. This is causing instability.”

“Exactly, Big Brother. This matter needs to be settled as soon as possible. It’s always better to settle things sooner than later.”

“I agree with Second Brother. Choosing an heir is crucial to the future of the family.”

The others nodded in agreement with Li Tianrun.

Li Tianming’s fingers, gripping the sofa arm, whitened slightly, though he said calmly, “In my opinion, we should wait a little longer to see which junior is the most suitable.”

This was the disadvantage of not having a son. Who told him, the head of the Li family, to only have a daughter?

Li Tianrun signaled to the person on his left and raised his teacup to drink.

“Big Brother, I think Qiancheng is a good choice. That kid was raised under our eyes; he’s smart. With the right training, he could do great things.”

Seeing Li Tianrun’s signal, the middle-aged man on his left quickly added.

“Big Brother, I think Qiancheng is perfect for the role. In just three to five years, he could definitely take on the Li family’s responsibilities.”

“Exactly, Big Brother. Among the younger generation, Qiancheng is the eldest, and he’s the most mature and reliable.”

As the others nodded along, their words suggested they had thoroughly thought it through.

Li Tianrun covered the smile on his face with his teacup. All his efforts had been worthwhile. He had to get this matter resolved in the next few days.

After all, Qiancheng had a point. Right now, that brat Xiao Ya was tangled up with Xu Shaochen. If Xu Shaochen had designs on the Li family, things would get tricky.

He had to settle this matter soon. The longer it dragged on, the more complications would arise.

He hadn’t told Li Qiancheng this because he didn’t want any slip-ups. Plus, it would be a nice surprise for him.

What he didn’t know was that Li Qiancheng had picked an even stupider way to handle this situation, which ultimately led to his death.

Li Tianming suppressed the rage in his heart and looked at Li Tianrun: “Tianrun, Qiancheng is your son. You know him best. Tell me your thoughts.”

“Big Brother, because he’s my son, I don’t feel right saying too much in this matter.” Li Tianrun pretended to avoid bias but then quickly added, “However, if you really want my opinion, I would say choosing the worthy should come before avoiding favoritism. After all, we’re all doing this for the family. Considering the current situation, Qiancheng really is the most suitable choice.”

He didn’t dare suggest Qiancheng wasn’t suitable; otherwise, what if Li Tianming used his words to veto it outright?

Li Tianming’s face remained impassive, though fury raged within him. ‘I’m not even dead yet, and you’re already in such a hurry?’

“This matter can be discussed again. Qiancheng is still a bit too young. Let’s talk about it in two years.”

    Li Tianming said coldly.

“Big Brother, this isn’t the first time we’ve brought this up. Every time, you just say to discuss it later. How long are you planning to drag this out?”

A middle-aged man stood up, clearly dissatisfied with Li Tianming’s delay. He had accepted ten million from Li Tianrun.

“Yes, Big Brother. I only recognize Qiancheng as the next heir. No one else.”

“Me too. Qiancheng respects his elders and unites his brothers. He’s the backbone our Li family needs for the future!”

Everyone stood up, opposing Li Tianming and demanding a conclusion today.

“Everyone calm down. I’m deeply grateful that you all think so highly of my son. Truly, it’s a blessing. But Big Brother has a point, Qiancheng is still young.”

Li Tianrun feigned humility: “Why don’t I propose a balanced solution? Let’s allow Qiancheng to temporarily take on the role of young family head while we continue to observe. What do you think?”

This was his backup plan. If Li Tianming pushed back too hard, he’d suggest this alternative.

If Li Tianming rejected it, he’d be seen as unreasonable.

Though it was temporary, Li Tianrun was confident he could ensure his son remained in the role ‘temporarily for life’.

“There’s no need to complicate things. Li Qiancheng is unfit to be the young family head. You should start considering a new candidate right away.”

At that moment, Xu Shaochen entered the room, speaking casually.

In an instant, everyone’s gaze fell on him.

“Xiao Xu, you’re here. Please, have a seat.”

Seeing Xu Shaochen, Li Tianming breathed a sigh of relief. No matter what, he had been given a way out.

“Young Master Xu, what did you mean by your earlier statement?”

Li Tianrun frowned at Xu Shaochen, a sense of dread rising within him.

    “Li Qiancheng is dead.”

    Xu Shaochen glanced at him.

    “Boom!”

The entire living room erupted in an uproar. The place was in chaos.

“Dead? How could he be dead?”

“Yeah, wasn’t he perfectly fine this afternoon?”

Li Tianrun’s face was livid as he yelled, “Impossible! Stop talking nonsense! There’s no way my son is dead!”

“Why wouldn’t it be possible? I personally had someone take him out. Don’t I already know?”

Xu Shaochen sneered, speaking calmly as if discussing something insignificant.

To him, Li Tianrun was just a bug, oblivious to how insignificant his life was.

The crowd was shocked again, staring at Xu Shaochen in disbelief.

“You… you… you killed my son!”

Li Tianrun’s eyes turned bloodshot, and he looked at Xu Shaochen as if he wanted to devour him.

Li Tianming’s expression was also grim as he stared at Xu Shaochen.

Li Qiancheng might have been one of the Li family’s inner members, but Xu Shaochen needed to explain himself.

Otherwise, no matter what, marriage with Li Qianya was off the table.

Everyone in the Li family looked at Xu Shaochen with hostility. For now, they were united against him.

“Li Qiancheng tried to kill me. Should I not be allowed to kill him? What kind of reasoning is that? Do the members of your Li family think they’re naturally superior?”

Xu Shaochen remained calm, his gaze mocking as it rested on Li Tianrun.

    “Impossible!”

Li Tianrun roared angrily, though panic flashed in his heart. “Impossible! There’s no way Qiancheng would do something like that! He would never try to kill you!”

Though he said this, a chilling thought stirred in his mind—’Could that fool Qiancheng really have done something this stupid?’

Xu Shaochen’s expression grew cold as he looked at Li Tianrun as if he were a dead man: “Why he tried to kill me is a question you should’ve asked your short-lived son. I’m just informing you of the fact. Explaining it isn’t my obligation.”

“You clueless fool. Make sure you know your place.”
