Chapter Index

The middle-aged man’s pleas were growing weaker.

Until finally, they became inaudible. Then, after a brief moment, a sharp scream echoed, and everything returned to silence.

    The morgue was eerily quiet.

Song Fei and Cai Yuanlin felt a profound sense of unease.

“If Qier hadn’t sought out Xu Shaochen, hadn’t been beaten by Xu Shaochen, he wouldn’t have lost control and run into the street. Then he wouldn’t have been hit by the car and killed.”

    Guo Zhenting muttered to himself.

When Song Fei and Cai Yuanlin heard this, they exchanged confused glances. What? Is he blaming Xu Shaochen for Guo Qi’s death?

What is he planning? This guy’s gone insane.

“Guo… Vice Leader Guo, I know you’re devastated by your son’s death, but I hope you calm down and don’t do anything irrational.”

Song Fei cautiously advised, knowing that if Guo Zhenting lost control, he could drag the whole of Hongmen down with him.

This guy’s brain is really twisted. Guo Qi was an idiot, and he ran into a drunk driver. What does Xu Shaochen have to do with it?

    “Calm down? Hahaha, calm down?”

“How do you expect me to calm down? My son is dead, my only son is dead! What do I have to fear anymore? What the hell do I have left to be scared of?”

Guo Zhenting burst into manic laughter, as if he’d just heard the funniest joke. His eyes were red with rage, filled with hatred and anger.

He didn’t just hate Xu Shaochen, he blamed Song Yuzhi and Gao Tian too.

Why were all three of them together, yet only his son ended up dead? Why were the other two still alive?

Why didn’t they all die together!

Song Fei wanted to say something more, but Cai Yuanlin tugged at his sleeve and shook his head, signaling him to stay quiet.

A few minutes later, Guo Zhenting left wordlessly, taking his people with him.

“What should we do? From the look of things, he’s planning to go after Xu Shaochen. This maniac is going to drag us all down with him!”

“He’s a madman. His son was an idiot, and now he’s trying to blame it on someone else.”

Watching Guo Zhenting leave, Song Fei anxiously turned to Cai Yuanlin.

“Let’s just wait and see. He’s just seen his son’s body, of course he’s emotional. Maybe he’ll calm down by tomorrow.”

Cai Yuanlin sighed, but even he knew that was a slim hope.

    “I hope so.”

Song Fei sighed as well, feeling helpless.

    ……

    The next day.

    Early morning.

Xu Shaochen and the others started their journey home.

“How was last night? Sleep well?”

Jenny, holding a cup of milk, looked at Xu Shaochen with a playful smile.

“I slept fine. But I think we should ask you. Did Aunt sleep well last night?”

Xu Shaochen said with a meaningful look as he hugged Tang Silin.

He’d noticed that the ring on Jenny’s finger was gone. She was still wearing it when she visited him last night.

Jenny’s face blushed slightly. Avoiding eye contact with Xu Shaochen, she shifted her gaze unsurely. “Uh-huh, I slept well enough. Why wouldn’t I?”

“Women always deceive themselves like this. Stubborn to the end. Why bother? You’ll only make trouble for yourself later.”

    Xu Shaochen shook his head.

“Get lost! Nothing good ever comes out of your mouth. If you can’t speak like a human, just keep it shut.”

Jenny glared at him angrily, clearly embarrassed.

As they bantered, three hours quickly passed, and by noon, the yacht had docked.

After Chen Dongqiu left, Sun Hai no longer stayed at the Xu residence and had rented a room at a hotel.

He said it was too boring living alone, so he decided to stay a few days in New York before returning to China.

    “Home or the company?”

Xu Shaochen asked as they got into the car and looked at Jenny.

“I’ll go to the company. You can head home yourself.”

Jenny thought for a moment before responding.

    “Ugh, could’ve said so earlier.”

Xu Shaochen clicked his tongue in frustration before getting out of the car and switching to another one to head home with Tang Silin.

“You’re back, Sister Silin. How’s it going?”

As the two entered the house, Li Qianya and Xie Wei lifted their heads from the sofa to greet them.

    “It’s fine.”

Tang Silin simply replied, walking over to pour herself a glass of water. After a brief pause, she poured a glass for Xu Shaochen as well.

Li Qianya and Xie Wei noticed this small gesture and exchanged a look of disbelief.

Since when did Tang Silin treat Xu Shaochen so well?

Tang Silin blushed slightly. “What are you staring at me for?”

    “N-nothing.”

Li Qianya and Xie Wei shook their heads like rattles, but their eyes remained glued to Tang Silin.

“Weiwei, do you think Sister Silin’s been possessed?”

Li Qianya whispered to Xie Wei, her eyes full of suspicion.

    “It’s possible.”

    Xie Wei nodded in agreement.

    “I’m going upstairs.”

Unable to take the tension anymore, Tang Silin quickly fled upstairs.

    Thud, thud, thud, thud…

“Young Master, someone is here to visit. He’s claiming to be Guo Zhenting, the Vice Leader of Hongmen.”

A bodyguard entered respectfully to inform Xu Shaochen.

Xu Shaochen frowned. The son had come last night, and now the father arrived today.

What is this? The son couldn’t handle me, so now the father is coming to try?

    “Let him in.”

    Xu Shaochen said.

    “Understood.”

The bodyguard nodded and left to carry out the order.

A few minutes later, the bodyguard returned with Guo Zhenting.

This was the first time Xu Shaochen had seen Guo Zhenting. He had short hair, was tall and thin. He was still somewhat good-looking for his age, but he seemed mentally exhausted.

“Mr. Xu, I apologize for intruding. I hope you don’t mind.”

Guo Zhenting spoke with a slight stiffness in his voice as he looked at Xu Shaochen.

Xu Shaochen frowned. What’s going on? I haven’t offended this old guy, have I?

Did Guo Qi complain to him, and now he’s here to hold me accountable?

“Weiwei, bring some tea for Vice Leader Guo.”

Xu Shaochen was puzzled, but he maintained a calm expression and spoke politely: “Vice Leader Guo, please take a seat. To what do I owe the honor of your visit today?”

“Mr. Xu, please, there’s no need for tea. I came today to deliver one brief message.”

Guo Zhenting paused before speaking again: “Xu Shaochen, my son is dead.”

Xu Shaochen’s expression froze. “Dead?” he asked in disbelief.

He couldn’t hide his shock. No matter what, he hadn’t expected Guo Qi to die so soon.

“He died last night. After his conflict with you, he became emotionally unstable and was hit by a car as soon as he left the building.”

Guo Zhenting continued, his tone flat and emotionless.

Upon hearing this, Xu Shaochen realized something was off. His expression darkened as he looked at Guo Zhenting. “Vice Leader Guo, are you implying that I’m somehow responsible for your son’s death?”
