Chapter Index

“Tianwen, Chairman Xu… he’s not that kind of person.”

Hou Xiaoyan responded with some displeasure after hearing Deng Tianwen’s comment.

“Xiaoyan, it’s true that I have a decent relationship with Xu Shaochen from our time in the capital, but just because of that, I can’t keep asking for favors.”

Deng Tianwen asked rhetorically before continuing, not waiting for her to reply: “Even blood brothers still have to keep accounts clear. If I ask for his help over and over, I’ll subconsciously feel indebted in any future interactions with him.”

To Deng Tianwen, his relationship with Xu Shaochen was solid, but it hadn’t reached the point where Xu Shaochen would help him repeatedly without expecting anything in return.

“I think you’re overthinking it! What kind of nonsense logic is that? Relationships between people aren’t always that complicated.”

Hou Xiaoyan angrily tossed out her retort before turning around and heading upstairs.

When she reached the corner of the stairs, she paused, glanced at Deng Tianwen, made a silent decision, and then continued upstairs.

Meanwhile, Deng Tianwen sat in the living room, still looking anxious as he refilled his cup with some strong tea.

    ………………

    Morning came.

Xu Shaochen met with Xu Zhou in his office at the company.

“Mr. Xu, it’s an honor to meet you. I’m Xu Zhou, and this is my resume.”

Xu Zhou stood up and respectfully handed over his prepared resume with a bow.

Xu Shaochen took the resume but immediately tossed it aside, saying, “I don’t need to look at these formalities. I trust that Chen Ji wouldn’t recommend just anyone to me. I hope to see your real abilities in the upcoming work.”

Having reviewed his file last night, Xu Shaochen didn’t need to see the resume again.

“Rest assured, Mr. Xu. They say that a man dies for a confidant. Since you gave me this opportunity, I will definitely seize it well. If I don’t perform within this one-month trial, I will resign of my own accord.”

Xu Zhou spoke with unwavering confidence. Despite his questionable morals, he was certainly capable at his job.

“I wasn’t planning on imposing a probation period on you in the first place.”

Xu Shaochen smiled as he spoke.

Xu Zhou twitched the corner of his mouth but remained silent.

“Go ahead. Do your best. I have high hopes for you.”

Xu Shaochen stood up and patted his shoulder in encouragement.

    “Yes, Chairman Xu.”

Xu Zhou turned to leave, filled with ambition as he secretly vowed to make up for his past mistakes and prove himself.

But can a dog really stop eating poop?

    “Go ahead, speak.”

After watching Xu Zhou leave, Xu Shaochen turned to the little secretary standing nearby, whose wandering gaze made it clear her mind was somewhere else.

    “Ah! Speak… what?”

Startled, the little secretary looked at Xu Shaochen with a confused expression.

Xu Shaochen rolled his eyes. “You might as well write ‘I have something to say’ across your forehead. What is it? Just spit it out!”

“Um… Chairman Xu, last night Lin Wei came to visit me…” At this, she paused and cautiously glanced at Xu Shaochen.

Xu Shaochen nodded. “Go on. Why did he come to see you?”

The secretary pouted. Geez. Hearing that Lin Wei came to see her late at night didn’t make him anxious at all.

The little secretary explained everything Lin Wei had told her the previous night.

“It’s amazing how one type of rice can feed all kinds of people. What kind of extreme personalities can be raised!”

After hearing her out, Xu Shaochen couldn’t help but sigh inwardly. In order to curry his favor, Lin Wei was voluntarily playing the fool. Impressive move, bro.

“Chairman Xu, what do you think?”

Ye Ling was tempted by the proposal, but the final decision was, of course, in Xu Shaochen’s hands.

Xu Shaochen looked at the little secretary. “What do you think?”

“I think it’s great.” The little secretary shared her thoughts and then added playfully, “Besides, Chairman Xu, doesn’t this idea make it feel even more exciting? I mean, officially I’d be someone else’s wife!”

“That jerk Lin Wei actually had the nerve to curse at you the other day. Now you’ll get a chance to sleep with his wife every night. Doesn’t that sound like sweet revenge?”

Xu Shaochen couldn’t help but laugh at her words. What on earth went on in this woman’s head? But why did that idea sound kind of thrilling?

“Since you’re fine with it, I have no objections.”

Xu Shaochen spoke breezily, making it clear his decision was entirely based on Ye Ling’s feelings. It absolutely had nothing to do with her last sentence.

After all, this was also, in a roundabout way, fulfilling Lin Wei’s ambitious dream. How could he crush a young man’s drive to pursue his dreams?

Thinking this, he felt incredibly noble.

“Chairman Xu, I love you to death!”

Hearing Xu Shaochen agree, Ye Ling was overjoyed and immediately threw herself into his arms. Finally, she had a solution to fool her parents.

Throwing herself into his arms was just the first step. There were many steps to follow. After all, since Xu Shaochen’s return, they hadn’t had any intimate moments together yet…

    “Ding ding ding…”

Just as things were heating up, Xu Shaochen’s phone, sitting on the desk, suddenly rang.

“Go get the phone for me.”

Xu Shaochen patted the little secretary.

Reluctantly, she got up, walked over, grabbed the phone, and glanced at the caller ID.

She cursed Hou Xiaoyan’s female ancestors eighteen generations back in her mind.

Seriously, of all the times to call, why now? Couldn’t she tell this was a terrible time for a phone call?

Suddenly, her eyes lit up, and a playful smile formed on the corner of her lips.

    “Hello, Xiaoyan. What’s up?”

Xu Shaochen signaled the little secretary to behave and then answered Hou Xiaoyan’s call with a gentle tone.

“Chairman Xu, I heard you’ve returned to the country. Both Tianwen and I didn’t come to visit, and now I’m calling you… I feel really embarrassed, but I’ve run out of options. Only you can help me and Tianwen.”

Her tone was full of apology and regret, mixed with a hint of pleading.

“Xiaoyan, what are you talking about? No need to be so polite. If you keep speaking like this, don’t call me anymore.” Xu Shaochen pretended to be annoyed for a moment but then softened his voice:

“So, from what you’re saying, Tianwen ran into some trouble. Tell me. As long as I can help, I won’t refuse.”

“Chairman Xu, thank you so much. Here’s what’s been happening. It all started during our time in the capital…”

Hou Xiaoyan recounted everything in detail.

After hearing her out, Xu Shaochen’s expression turned solemn. “So it’s partly my fault, too. But don’t worry, Xiaoyan. I’ll definitely help you with this.”

Seeing his change in expression, the little secretary knew that the “unfinished business” was now off the table. She sensibly picked up Xu Shaochen’s clothes, preparing to help him get dressed.
