Chapter Index

“Immediately secure all highway exits, the airport, and train stations within Changfei City. Conduct thorough inspections of non-locals!”

“Everyone coming from Jiangzhou or heading back to Jiangzhou must be checked!”

    Huo Shen roared hysterically.

The person had been dead for less than thirty minutes.

In such a short time, leaving Changfei City after committing murder wasn’t realistic.

The intersection where Xu Zhou was killed was during rush hour. It would take at least an hour to reach the highway exits from there.

So, it was still possible to intercept them.

Moreover, Huo Shen had a great deal of influence. It was fair to say that, in Changfei City, his status was similar to Xu Shaochen’s in Jiangzhou.

When Huo Shen gave the order, the entire city mobilized.

    Attentive people would notice.

At the train stations and highway exits, not only were the police setting up checkpoints, but there were also many suspicious strangers lingering about.

The police wanted to catch the murderer, and so did Huo Shen. It was a clear case of civilian-police cooperation.

Due to the checkpoints, the highway exits were severely congested.

In a black Lavida sedan, two middle-aged men in tracksuits slowed the car’s speed.

    “Honk—honk—”

A horn blared from behind, urging them forward.

    “What should we do?”

The man in the driver’s seat looked at his companion in the passenger seat.

These two were the very bodyguards who had killed Xu Zhou.

Following their original plan, they had changed appearances and avoided surveillance as they headed for the highway.

However, the traffic was unimaginable. What should have been a 40-minute drive had stretched to nearly an hour, and they were just now reaching the toll gate.

By this time, the police were already stationed at the toll gate, and Huo Shen’s men had also arrived.

“What’s that car doing? Move forward and submit to inspection.”

A police officer shouted at them from afar with a loudspeaker.

    “Ram through!”

The companion in the passenger seat said calmly.

The driver said nothing. He pressed the gas pedal, ready to break through the checkpoint.

But as fate would have it.

Just as he stepped on the gas, an impatient Toyota from behind couldn’t wait any longer and tried to pass them on the side.

    And then, it was T-boned.

    “Clang!”

The Toyota was hit with immense force, sent flying and skidding several meters.

    “Damn!”

Both middle-aged men in the Lavida cursed simultaneously.

Then, without hesitation, they grabbed their knives, got out of the car, and fled.

They had already missed the best opportunity to break through; staying in the car now meant certain death.

“There’s something wrong with them! Catch them! Mr. Huo said there’s a one-million reward for capturing the killer!”

While the police rushed to check on the injured in the Toyota, Huo Shen’s men quickly charged at Xu Shaochen’s two bodyguards.

Whether these two men were the culprits or not, they had to be caught. After all, it was better to wrongfully catch someone than let them slip away.

    “Bunch of trash!”

Seeing that more than 20 thugs were rushing at them from all directions, the two bodyguards sneered and, instead of retreating, advanced and launched their attack.

    “Aah! My head!”

    “Aah!”

In no time, horrified screams filled the air. Out of the 20 plus people blinded by greed, half were down within minutes.

The remaining dozen or so hesitated, exchanging uncertain glances. None dared step forward.

“These two must be enhanced humans. Let us brothers handle this!”

Two young men in their twenties shouted and stepped forward to confront the bodyguards.

“I’ve been waiting to fight for real. Let’s see if you can live up to my expectations.”

One of the young men sneered at the bodyguards, then charged at them together with his companion.

    The result…

Before they could even get close, they were both kicked away.

    “Ugh!”

They spat out blood in unison, slamming hard into a car, shattering its windshield.

    “This… how is this possible…”

Clutching their chests, the two young men were dumbstruck. Why was there such a huge gap between them and these bodyguards, even though they were all enhanced humans?

They didn’t expect an even match, but surely, they shouldn’t have been kicked away that easily.

Could it be that the Genetic Serum they had injected was a fake?

Ever since Xu Shaochen mentioned the term ‘Genetic Serum’ during an interview, everyone had started calling the old nutrient liquid by that name.

“Freeze! Hands over your heads! Get on the ground!”

“Freeze! This is your last warning! We will open fire!”

In the end, a group of armed police officers surrounded the two bodyguards.

The two men exchanged glances, both feeling helpless. After all, they couldn’t harm the police.

Once they fought back, the situation would change entirely.

Moreover, they hadn’t brought guns with them this time; there was no way they’d pass security checks with one.

The first generation Genetic Serum hadn’t advanced to the point where they were immune to bullets and knives.

Thus, they had no choice but to surrender and be arrested.

“Damn, enhanced humans or not, I thought they could conquer the world!”

“You killed my man on my turf and think you can walk away? Such delusional arrogance!”

When Huo Shen received word that the two had been captured, he was ecstatic. The anger in his heart finally subsided a little.

He was bent on retaliating against Xu Shaochen, teaching that young heir a lesson and showing him how formidable he was.

Half an hour later, he met the two bodyguards in prison.

“Do you know who I am?”

Huo Shen looked at the two men and asked.

They snorted in contempt and looked away, unwilling to answer.

Huo Shen didn’t get angry. He continued stating his purpose: “If you testify that Xu Shaochen ordered you to kill, I can arrange for a reduced sentence. Once you’re out, I’ll give you a bright future. How about that?”

That was his plan. He didn’t believe their testimony alone would bring Xu Shaochen down.

But at least it would cause a lot of trouble for him, and that was enough.

    The two remained silent.

Huo Shen’s face darkened: “A wise man knows when to submit. Don’t push your luck!”

“How much can you offer us?” one bodyguard asked.

Huo Shen’s face lit up: “Ten million.”

To him, this was a sizable amount for ordinary people.

The bodyguard who had spoken sneered: “Your poverty limits your imagination.”

Xu Shaochen’s payment for this job had been one billion yuan per person.

Of course, he wasn’t about to mention that or Xu Shaochen’s name.

It would only cause unnecessary trouble for Xu Shaochen.

But it didn’t stop him from looking down on this over-ambitious upstart in front of him.

    “You’re courting death!”

Huo Shen flew into a rage, his pride wounded by the body guard’s mocking smile and disdainful gaze.

The two bodyguards chuckled softly and shook their heads in indifference.

    Were they afraid of death?

No, they weren’t afraid. They only feared not making enough money.

Now that they had earned their money and their families were taken care of, what did death matter?
