Chapter 35: The Early Bird Catches the Worm
by xennovel“The organizers, to thank us for our contribution to this event, have given us ten concert tickets. If anyone is interested, you can draw for a chance. These tickets are gifts and are non-transferable.” When Yang Bo arrived at the company, he was surprised to see more than twenty people gathered.
“Boss, do you think we’re that inadequate? Our family already bought our tickets!”
“Yeah, yeah, we’ve already got ours.”
Some who had already purchased tickets spoke up, but quite a few who hadn’t managed to secure tickets remained silent.
“How’s your work going?” Liu Zhijie dismissed the others but kept Yang Bo around, asking in a low voice.
“Thank you, boss. Things are going well,” Yang Bo replied. In his earlier impressions, Liu Zhijie had seemed like just a small-time entrepreneur, but now Yang realized this man was far more dangerous than he previously thought.
As Yang Bo spoke, the sound of his voice reverberated back at him, revealing that the energy field around Liu Zhijie was immensely strong, making his figure appear distorted.
Now, as a Genetic Evolver who could even recharge his own body, Yang Bo noticed that the capabilities for this so-called gene evolution seemed somewhat off. Could he still be considered human? Sure, he was, but it seemed beyond human too. How could anyone explain it?
The concert lasted for five days, from 8 p.m. to midnight each night. Yang Bo had tickets for the third night.
“Good, keep it up. The company will consider your next training schedule soon,” Liu Zhijie said, visibly satisfied.
“Thank you, boss.” Yang Bo had no intention of leaving An Zhijie Corporation at the moment. Though the company dealt with dirty work, as long as he could live well, that was enough.
Besides, this kind of company was perfect for him to hide his identity. Nobody would investigate a company like this. No one could guarantee that by snooping around, they wouldn’t run into trouble at the top.
Lately, Yang Bo had also realized how deeply entrenched this world’s hierarchy had become. The top 500 companies in the Alliance hadn’t changed positions in the last 500 years. That alone spoke volumes.
As for the political families, they were constantly swapping power among themselves, but Yang Bo had no intention of rebelling.
With money in his pocket now, Yang Bo realized he could get married anytime he wanted. Some companies even handled the tech part, ensuring the health of offspring. They even sold eggs from female Genetic Evolvers, meaning with enough money, nothing was impossible. These eggs carried a chance of having naturally awakened Genetic Evolver offspring.
As to how much this gene evolution could be passed down through marriage between Genetic Evolvers—well, the data wasn’t public, but Yang Bo had his own ideas.
Though marriage was an option, Yang Bo wasn’t planning on it just yet. Too many complexities and secrets still lingered in his life. That redhead who had been following him lately, for example.
During his night shift, Yang Bo seemed distracted. Only after work did he smack his head, realizing: “How could I be so dumb? The redhead showed up around here, meaning he must live in the community!”
Yang Bo figured he often overcomplicated things. But this community was really big, covering at least a hundred acres.
He couldn’t just ask around about where others lived, so there was only one dumb method left—wait.
Yang Bo returned home and headed to the rooftop garden. This was the dormitory for An Zhijie Corporation employees, and though he had access to the rooftop garden, he’d never been there before.
Yang Bo expected it would take time to find anything of interest, but the moment he stepped onto the garden, he spotted—on the far end of another building’s rooftop—a blonde man standing beside a redhead.
The redhead, sensing someone staring at him, glanced over casually before turning to his companion: “After we complete the job and make our move the day after tomorrow, that resident on the rooftop there is worth three million credits.”
“Three million… a resident?” The blonde seemed surprised but kept his expression calm.
“Yeah, probably some hidden secret. Let’s take care of the person first and find out what’s what.” The redhead replied, unconcerned.
“Are the preparations ready?”
“Of course. Once the banquet starts, after hundreds of years in the shadows, it’s time the world remembered us again.” The red-haired youth stood tall, filled with confidence.
From afar, Yang Bo furrowed his brow but quietly walked back down the stairs without confrontation.
“Should I use Invisibility to check up on them?” Yang Bo muttered to himself.
Yang Bo still wasn’t completely sure how effective his Invisibility skill was, but after considering it briefly, he exchanged some game tokens to generate three million credits and bought a detection device.
In his understanding, if something was called Invisibility, it shouldn’t be easy to detect. Otherwise, it would just be Camouflage.
The device was a small, standalone detector capable of multiple scan modes, mainly used for places with heavy shielding like security agencies or laboratories.
It looked similar to a handheld metal detector from Earth. After reading the manual, Yang Bo took it to the bathroom.
Switching to standard mode, he watched himself disappear in the mirror. Even to his own eyes, he was gone.
The detector remained silent, only reacting when Yang Bo deactivated his Invisibility and illuminated his finger momentarily.
Beep beep beep! The device emitted a sharp sound.
But ultimately, Yang Bo felt it was better to deal with these enemies openly.
So, without resting, Yang Bo finished recharging and headed straight for SkyDome Amusement Park.
“These thugs wouldn’t be here just for fun, not in a group like that. Let’s see what I can find out.” Yang Bo chose a quiet tea lounge with a good vantage point, allowing him to keep an eye on the direction of his community.
“What amateur Camouflage.” Yang Bo’s eyes landed on a blonde man, instantly recognizing a familiar aura shared by these ‘guys’.
Sure, there were plenty of blondes around—great looking ones too—but this group gave off an unmistakably false impression. Their smiles? Fake. Even their gait seemed forced.
“One!”
“Two!”
“Here comes the redhead.”
Yang Bo watched as three of them arrived before shifting to a different location, determined to figure out what they were here for.
There were a lot of people around, but Yang Bo wore special energy-resistant glasses to avoid detection, and sure enough, they didn’t notice him.
“This Camouflage is fantastic!” Yang Bo thought, feeling pleased with the skill. In this high-tech world, passive abilities like Camouflage were highly valuable for seeing through surface appearances.
“The control center?” Yang Bo wandered for hours, observing these individuals as they loitered like tourists.
Yet there was one area they frequented more than others—the control center. Yang knew because there was signage indicating a restricted zone.
“They’re not targeting me?”
“But is it possible to breach the control center that easily?” His suspicions flared.
“I’ll return to the community, check how many of them are staying there, and after they leave, I’ll sneak in to investigate.” Yang Bo figured he needed to go on the offensive, given how bold their plans were.
