Chapter 56: Metal Control
by xennovelA piercing alarm suddenly blared inside the control room of Base 16. Without the commander’s input, the large screen flickered to life.
Eight Mechas stood tall on the ridge, when suddenly, shadows lunged at them. The massive impact forced the eight high-level Mechas to tumble down into the adjacent valley.
The shadows followed relentlessly. The alert system constantly tried to lock onto them, but they were too close to the Mechas.
“What are we waiting for? Attack! Exchanging these Mutants for eight high-level Mechas is worth it!” someone in the control room shouted anxiously.
“That’s a planetary railgun. We don’t have the authority for that,” the base commander replied, shaking his head.
“Damn it…”
The grumbling stopped abruptly. In just a few seconds, the eight Mechas had already been destroyed. The shadows tore apart the Mechas, scavenging parts, before disappearing into the caves in the valley.
The base personnel frowned. The commander spoke: “Why hasn’t the fleet commander intervened? The Razor Mechas were destroyed twice already.”
“Captain, could it be that these high-class Mecha pilots have some big background?”
“That shouldn’t be…”
While they were all puzzled, a violent energy wave suddenly surged from numerous caves in the valley. Though it was soundless, the shaking ground signaled that something major was happening.
Then, a familiar Razor Mecha shot out of one of the caves… The base commander was dumbfounded: “Replay the footage?”
“Sorry, this is a non-sensitive zone. No recordings available.”
Meanwhile, Yang Bo saw the metallic rhino and knew he couldn’t escape by flying. He dove into a nearby cave, leaving behind a Mini Hydrogen Bomb at the entrance in an attempt to block off any pursuit.
This silver-armored rhino was a Grade B mutated beast, extremely formidable. It could metalize its body and its horn released a strange energy ray that enhanced metal fatigue. It was one of the most dangerous mutants in the area. The beast usually resided underground, only occasionally surfacing for a wander.
The reason it was still alive was due to the game’s official demand for it to be captured alive. Killing it would yield no game points. From Yang Bo’s understanding, this particular mutant was exceptionally rare, likely intended for military experiments.
Yang Bo knew that this planet could be annihilated by warships or orbital railguns. Since it hadn’t been, the precious resources must be fought for with Mechas.
Before coming here, Yang Bo had done his research. The strange ray emitted by the silver-armored rhino was terrifyingly effective against Mechas.
In the virtual cockpit, the sharp blare of the alarm rang in Yang Bo’s ears. A massive explosion echoed behind him, prompting him to dash forward.
However, his Mecha was large. Wherever it could move, the armored rhino could follow. Upon entering, Yang Bo quickly threw two Shockwave Bombs.
Boom! In the confined space of the cave, the two Shockwave Bombs were like tossing a bundle of flashbangs inside a small room! Though Mechas were soundproof, the over hundred-ton vehicle was shaking violently as the piercing alarms rang even louder.
Through the virtual screen, Yang Bo saw the dust and rocks flying everywhere.
Roar! The silver-armored rhino behind him roared angrily. The two Shockwave Bombs had enraged the beast, making its body glow with bright silver. It ignored the obstacles like stalactites in the cave, rapidly accelerating.
Everything in its way was shattered into countless fragments.
“Danger! Danger!” The Mecha’s sensors detected the huge energy fluctuation behind, issuing a warning.
Though it seemed like a long time, only a few seconds had passed. Yang Bo pushed the left control lever, activating the Jetpack, darting sideways into another tunnel.
As soon as he rushed into the passage, the radar showed a dangerous red blast skimming his Mecha’s surface. Looking through his rear camera, Yang Bo saw the silver-armored rhino, its body coated in silvery energy as it charged at him. If he hadn’t activated the Jetpack at that moment, he would’ve been flattened like a bowling pin.
Run! There’s no way my Mecha can defeat this Grade B mutant! Not even the hydrogen bombs work.
With his left hand controlling the Jetpack’s output and his right hand gripping two hydrogen bombs, Yang Bo pressed on.
The next second, the Mecha’s piercing alarm went off again, signaling high-energy activity ahead.
“Damn! So soon!” Without enough time to figure out what lay ahead, Yang Bo tossed the two hydrogen bombs and quickly darted into another tunnel.
Boom! Boom! The entire cave seemed on the verge of collapse. Two Mini Hydrogen Bombs were just that powerful.
“Damn it!” Yang Bo was ready to self-destruct. He still had two Shockwave Bombs and one Mini Hydrogen Bomb left.
The next second, a flash of light caught Yang Bo’s eye as he activated the Jetpack.
Midway, the Mecha seemed to have collided with a shadow. Due to the dust kicked up by the hydrogen explosions and the energy pulses, Yang Bo’s radar was briefly jammed. The Mecha’s visuals were unclear amidst the flying sand and stones.
Metal Superpower +8!
As the Mecha flew out of the cave entrance and emerged into the open, a new message flashed across Yang Bo’s mind.
Floating in mid-air, Yang Bo spotted what seemed to be a puddle of mush in front of his Mecha. He reached out with the Mecha’s hand, discovering that it was the body of a Mutant.
“This… this…” Yang Bo was still in shock as his gaze fell towards the wreckage of Mechas down in the valley.
Yang Bo was dumbstruck. How did these Mechas get wrecked? One could tell they weren’t cheap just by looking at the remains.
Metal Superpower +8!
Metal Superpower +8! Controlling the Razor Mecha, Yang Bo stood on the mountain ridge, his mind a mess. He hadn’t provoked anyone, right? At the same time, those at Base 16 stared, dumbfounded, watching as Yang Bo’s Razor Mecha appeared on the mountaintop.
The Tiger-Faced King was just as stunned. Moments ago, it had been fuming after watching its neighbor ambush eight high-level Mechas.
This neighbor had a metalized body and absorbed different metals to expand its own power.
It had watched as the neighbor took away rare metal components from the Mechas, and now, the Tiger-Faced King cursed loudly.
Without any further ado, the Razor Mecha shot out of the caves. It seemed that a minion of its neighbor had been crushed into mush by the Mecha.
“What!?” The Tiger-Faced King was equally dumbfounded. How had this disaster managed to escape the silver-armored rhino, one of the most dangerous creatures that even it hesitated to fight?
“My King, do you think our neighbor encountered the silver-armored rhino while underground?” one of the Tiger-Faced King’s subordinates speculated.
Hearing this, the Tiger-Faced King glanced at the image of the Razor Mecha. “Heh. If our neighbor ran into the silver-armored rhino, things must be looking grim. That rhino can age metal. Our neighbor… Come, let’s go offer our condolences.”
