Chapter 181: Not Doing Tasks? Then Dahuang Takes Over!
by xennovelDahuang lifted its head with a bitter expression, glancing at the Enlightenment Tree above before cautiously stepping toward the rocking chair.
Looking at Gu Qingyi lounging on the chair, Dahuang wrestled with its thoughts for a moment before finally speaking up.
“So… um, Host Daddy, any chance you could do a task or two? Don’t worry, there are some juicy rewards waiting!”
Gu Qingyi, still rocking lazily, cracked open his eyes to glance at Dahuang, noting the eager look on the creature’s face.
He paused for a beat, then said flatly, “Not interested!”
With that, he rolled over and shut his eyes again.
“Huh?” Dahuang blinked, half-convinced its ears were playing tricks on it, conjuring up some wild hallucination.
“Host Daddy, are you really not gonna do it?” Dahuang pressed, refusing to give up just yet.
Gu Qingyi turned his head, letting out a cold huff. “I’m already invincible. I’ve got resources and techniques for days. Why would I bother with tasks?”
“And what could you possibly offer that I don’t already have? If you’ve got nothing, then quit disturbing my nap!”
Dahuang froze at his words. Gu Qingyi wasn’t wrong—right now, Dahuang didn’t have a single thing to its name, not even a stray hair to offer…
But if the host kept refusing tasks, Dahuang would be done for—kaput on the spot.
With a helpless sigh, Dahuang resigned itself to issuing a few small tasks, just to get through this immediate crisis for now.
“Ding~ Random task triggered: Host must lie down in any spot for more than three seconds.”
“Task reward: Three delicious and juicy Heavenly Spirit Fruits to satisfy your hunger!”
“Ding~ Host has been detected to have completed this task. Three Heavenly Spirit Fruits are hereby awarded.”
“Ding~ Random task triggered: Host must close their eyes for more than five seconds.”
“Task reward: An Enchanted Broom infused with spiritual energy that cleans on its own!”
“Ding~ Host has been detected to have completed this task. One Enchanted Broom is hereby awarded.”
“Ding~ Random task triggered: Host must breathe for more than three seconds.”
“Task reward: A Spirit-Infused Hoe brimming with spiritual energy!”
“Ding~ Host has been detected to have completed this task. One Spirit-Infused Hoe is hereby awarded.”
After issuing these three tiny tasks, the energy Dahuang had burned crossing the Void recovered by a mere fraction—one-thousandth, to be exact. But at least it was no longer in immediate danger…
A wave of relief washed over it.
Dahuang eyed the Enchanted Broom, Spirit-Infused Hoe, and the tantalizing Heavenly Spirit Fruits on the ground. Its mouth watered uncontrollably as it struggled to hold itself back.
Taking a step forward, it couldn’t resist any longer and wolfed down the three glistening Heavenly Spirit Fruits in a frenzy.
“No surprise there—these Heavenly Spirit Fruits are on another level. So tasty, never gets old!” Dahuang licked its lips, savoring the lingering flavor.
After finishing its snack, Dahuang’s scheming little mind turned back to Gu Qingyi. That’s right—it planned to keep issuing tasks, especially ones with edible rewards.
That way, it could feast to its heart’s content. Not only would it fill its belly, but it’d also restore its core energy and complete tasks in the process. A triple win—where else could you find such a sweet deal?
Lost in its daydreams, saliva dribbled from the corner of Dahuang’s mouth as a creepy, mischievous chuckle escaped its lips.
That eerie laugh jolted Gu Qingyi awake. He raised his head in confusion, only to see Dahuang standing nearby, giggling like a fool.
Barely containing his irritation, he roared, “Dahuang, you dumb mutt, what are you snickering about over there? You’re so loud—can’t you go laugh somewhere else?”
“Ah?” Dahuang snapped out of its daze.
It wiped the drool from its mouth, suddenly realizing how ridiculous it must’ve looked. At the same time, it worried whether Gu Qingyi had overheard any of its scheming…
Clearing its throat, Dahuang forced a calm demeanor. “Right away, Host Daddy. I’ll get out of your hair and won’t disturb your rest!”
“Scram already!” Gu Qingyi shot a sideways glance at Dahuang.
“On it!” Dahuang replied sheepishly before slinking off to hide behind the Enlightenment Tree.
“Still early. Might as well sleep a bit more.” Gu Qingyi stretched with a yawn, then settled back into his chair.
From its hiding spot behind the Enlightenment Tree, Dahuang watched Gu Qingyi lie down again. A sly smirk curled at the corner of its mouth.
That’s right—Dahuang could keep using Gu Qingyi as a tool to farm rewards!
“Ding~ Temporary task triggered: Host must remain completely still for more than thirty seconds.”
“Task reward: Thirty immortal-grade Peach Tree Seeds and one Peach of Immortality!”
“Ding~ Host has been detected to have successfully completed this task. Thirty seeds and one ripe Peach of Immortality are hereby awarded.”
Dahuang’s eyes lit up as the Peach of Immortality appeared beside it. With both paws, it pinned the fruit down and started devouring it with gusto.
“Burp!”
Dahuang patted its doggy belly with a paw.
“This Peach of Immortality is just divine. Too bad the host didn’t get to enjoy it. As for these seeds, though… not much use for them. Guess I’ll hang onto them for now.”
Dahuang paused its actions, glancing over at the neatly arranged seeds on the ground nearby.
Looking at its slightly bulging belly, Dahuang hesitated. Should it keep milking this opportunity?
It didn’t take long to decide. After all, the more treasures, the better. Who’d turn down a tool that endlessly churns out goodies?
With that thought, Dahuang got to work, immediately issuing a big task—one that directly involved itself.
“Ding~ Emergency task triggered: Within one hour, Dahuang must land a solid slap on the host.”
“Task reward: Ten Enlightenment Fruits, three Heaven-Tier Manuals, and a wisp of World Origin!”
Dahuang’s heart skipped a beat as it reviewed the task it had just issued. This was practically a death wish.
It wavered, torn by doubt. If it actually gave Gu Qingyi a resounding slap, there’d only be two possible outcomes.
First: Instant death!
Second: Death after a world of pain!
But fortune favors the bold. Even as a system, Dahuang couldn’t help but drool over those rewards.
Rolling up the fur on its arm, Dahuang steeled itself and decided to go all in for the big prize!
No sooner said than done—it lunged toward Gu Qingyi on the rocking chair with the speed of a lightning bolt.
“Take this!” Dahuang raised its paw and delivered a heavy smack right across Gu Qingyi’s left cheek.
“Smack!”
A crisp sound echoed through the air.
“Ding~ Congratulations to Dahuang for completing this task. Ten Enlightenment Fruits, three Heaven-Tier Manuals, and a wisp of World Origin are hereby awarded.”
Dahuang stared at the pile of rewards beneath it. The nervous tension from moments ago melted away, replaced by a rush of joy as it broke into a goofy grin right there on the spot.
Gu Qingyi’s eyes snapped open in pain. He locked onto the culprit—Dahuang—and fury surged through him. Grabbing Dahuang by the neck, he glared.
“You idiot dog, what are you up to now? If you don’t give me a good reason this instant, I might just change my mind about something!”
“Like butchering you on the spot and enjoying a nice dog meat feast. Doesn’t sound half bad!”
Gu Qingyi’s eyes darkened as he spoke, a chilling half-smile playing on his lips while he stared at Dahuang.
A shiver ran through Dahuang as an icy dread gripped it. Stammering pitifully, it rushed to explain.
“Host Daddy, I swear it’s a misunderstanding! I just saw a blasted mosquito sucking your blood. How could I stand by and let that happen?”
“So I threw an uppercut, followed by a perfect slap. And, well, this is the result…”
As it spoke, Dahuang held out its paw for emphasis. Sure enough, there on its pad was a squashed, very dead mosquito.
