Chapter 91: A Hasty Escape
by xennovelInside this cozy little house, the atmosphere suddenly turned tense, the air thick with the smell of conflict.
Xie Jinxuan stood stark naked, feeling a chilly breeze drift in from the doorway that made him shiver uncontrollably.
He hugged himself tight, shuddering, and looked plaintively at the six arguing Su sisters, his eyes full of innocence and a silent plea.
“Ladies, could you please give me my clothes back? It’s freezing in here and being shirtless is killing me,” Xie Jinxuan asked earnestly, glancing between the girls.
All six Su sisters turned their icy stares on him.
“Shut up! If you’re cold, use a blanket. It’s not your turn to speak!” Su Wan snapped, hands on her hips, shooting a frosty glare at Xie Jinxuan.
“Brother Xiaoyao, why do these girls suddenly seem like completely different people? So cold… Are you cold too?” Xie Jinxuan, startled by Su Wan’s sudden chilliness, edged closer to Gu Xiaoyao, looking utterly miserable.
“They’re handling family matters and you, a man, just barged in. Of course they won’t be nice to you. If you’re cold, use this blanket.” Gu Xiaoyao rolled his eyes and tossed a spare blanket Xie Jinxuan’s way.
“You’re the best, Brother Xiaoyao. Should we take this chance and sneak out while they’re distracted?” Xie Jinxuan clutched the blanket, practically weeping with relief.
“Didn’t you say you wanted to help these girls? Having second thoughts already?” Gu Xiaoyao turned around, giving Xie Jinxuan a look of disbelief like he couldn’t believe what he was hearing.
“The past is the past, now is now. Look at this atmosphere! Something’s off,” Xie Jinxuan said, hugging himself tighter, eyes filled with resistance.
He frowned anxiously. “If these five sisters need yin and yang balance, won’t I be completely drained? My little body can’t take losing so much yang energy at once. I’ll be bedridden for days!”
“You really are something. You’re never this timid normally, but now you look like a quail who’s been scared out of his wits.” Gu Xiaoyao couldn’t help but laugh at the sight of Xie Jinxuan’s pitiful expression.
“I’m not joking, Brother Xiaoyao. My body really can’t handle this…” Xie Jinxuan protested, looking even more woeful.
“Don’t worry, I’m here. I’ll protect you.” Gu Xiaoyao gave his shoulder a reassuring pat.
“Brother Xiaoyao, you’re a true friend. Once this is over, drinks are on me.” Xie Jinxuan shot him a grateful look.
“Deal. You said it.” Gu Xiaoyao smiled back.
Just then, a sharp scream rang out, followed by the sounds of a fight.
…………….
Gu Xiaoyao and Xie Jinxuan exchanged glances.
“Jinxuan, let’s sneak out of here quietly.” Gu Xiaoyao rubbed his forehead, looking helpless at the chaotic scene.
The two immediately agreed. They crept off the bed, seizing the moment while the sisters argued to try slipping out unnoticed.
They tiptoed to the door. Seeing the freedom outside, their faces lit up—they thought they were home free.
But before they could make a move, a petite figure darted in front of the door, arms stretched wide to block their escape.
“Sisters, stop fighting! They’re trying to get away!” Su Xiaoxiao called out, her tone icy as she physically barred the door and yelled into the room.
Realizing they’d been caught, the two made a split-second decision.
“Run, Jinxuan!” Gu Xiaoyao shouted, instantly casting a binding spell to freeze Su Xiaoxiao in place.
They bolted, running for their lives with every ounce of strength, desperate to leave the Su sisters far behind.
Inside, the sisters stopped arguing the moment they heard Su Xiaoxiao’s cry.
They sprang up, expressions shifting sharply.
All eyes shot to the bed—Gu Xiaoyao and Xie Jinxuan were nowhere to be seen. Next they spotted Su Xiaoxiao frozen at the door.
A sense of dread crept into everyone’s hearts.
Su Yao dashed to Su Xiaoxiao’s side, quickly undoing the binding spell and steadying her just as she started to slump.
Su Xiaoxiao looked anxiously up at Su Yao. “Sister, it’s bad! Gu and Xie ditched us while you were all fighting!”
With almost no demon power left, Su Xiaoxiao’s human form faded away—she turned back into a tiny, feeble white fox, collapsing weakly in Su Yao’s arms.
“Don’t worry, Xiaoxiao. They can’t get far. I’ll bring them back, and make sure you get your strength back.” Su Yao’s eyes flashed coldly. She stroked Su Xiaoxiao’s fur, her tone ice cold.
Su Yao stood and handed Su Xiaoxiao to Su Xue, instructing, “Fifth Sister, I’m leaving Xiaoxiao to you. Nothing can happen to her until we’re back!”
“Don’t worry, Sisters—I’ll keep an eye on Sixth Sister. Nothing will go wrong.” Su Xue promised, taking Xiaoxiao and nodding firmly.
“Alright, if that’s settled, everyone else comes with me. Those two aren’t getting far!” Su Yao said, voice urgent.
With a swish, the sisters all rushed out.
………………
Gu Xiaoyao and Xie Jinxuan, still shirtless, sprinted for their lives. When no one chased after them, both let out a deep breath.
Gu Xiaoyao had never imagined his luck would be this bad—there really was a mid-sixth rank Celestial Fox Demon here. Not to mention a whole bunch of fifth rank ones. Fighting was out of the question. Demon beasts outclass human cultivators in every way, and there were so many of them.
A beautiful rose, delicate as it is, hides sharp thorns that can prick your finger in an instant—beauty and danger in one.
That was the Su sisters: pretty as flowers and harmless at first glance, their sweet smiles like sunlight, making people want to get close.
But beneath that beauty lay power—fearsome power, far beyond ordinary mortals.
They were demon beasts in human form, each with strength and abilities beyond belief.
…………………
In a dense forest, sunshine trickled through the leafy canopy, scattering patches of light on the ground.
It was peaceful—only birdsong and the trickle of a stream could be heard.
Towering trees reached skyward, their trunks so thick it would take several people linking arms to encircle them.
The canopy spread wide like an enormous parasol, casting cool shade over the earth below.
The leaves were lush and green, painting a vibrant scene that filled the heart with calm.
Wildflowers and grasses grew everywhere among the trees,
Splashes of color sparkled in the grass like stars, each flower more brilliant than the last.
The air was rich with the scent of flowers and fresh greenery, clearing the mind and refreshing the spirit.
Xie Jinxuan sat alone on a boulder, shivering as a chill wind cut through him. He hugged himself tight, trying in vain to find a bit of warmth.
But the wind wouldn’t relent, and he sneezed again and again.
“Strange, I’m usually never sick. How could a few gusts of wind give me a cold? Maybe it’s just exhaustion?” Xie Jinxuan wiped his nose, looked around, and muttered to himself.
