Chapter Index

“Xiaoyao, don’t you think this wind is a bit too chilly? Did we come to the wrong place or something? The air feels freezing!” Xie Jinxuan sneaked a glance at Gu Xiaoyao standing beside him.

Unfazed, Gu Xiaoyao stood shirtless at the mountain peak, letting the wind whip past him. His expression never wavered as he replied calmly, “Jinxuan, something feels off about this place.”

The peaceful valley was thick with the scent of fresh grass. Every now and then, a bird’s call cut through the stillness.

Sunlight from the afternoon filtered through the treetops, scattering dappled patterns across them.

The two of them sat down beneath a big tree.

Xie Jinxuan glanced up at the sky, noticing it was getting late. He turned to Gu Xiaoyao and said, “Xiaoyao, we should get out of these woods before night falls.”

“You’re right, Jinxuan. Let’s get moving.” Gu Xiaoyao gave Xie Jinxuan a nod, stood up, and dusted off his clothes.

Just as they were about to leave, a sudden rustling came from a nearby thicket.

Both men snapped their heads toward the sound. The grass was shaking wildly, as if something big was hiding in there.

Gu Xiaoyao’s eyes turned cold. He shaped his fingers like a sword, sending a flash of light straight into the brush. With a sharp yell he demanded, “Who’s sneaking around? Get out here now!”

    ……………

The rustling stopped at once. A moment later, a small white rabbit darted out.

“Just a little bunny? For a second I thought something scary was lurking in there.” Xie Jinxuan let out a relieved sigh.

“Jinxuan, that’s no ordinary bunny—there’s something else here.” Gu Xiaoyao crept closer, scanning the area warily.

“Not a bunny? Then what is it?” Xie Jinxuan looked at Gu Xiaoyao, a little confused.

Gu Xiaoyao didn’t answer. Instead, he carefully pulled apart the grass.

Suddenly, several enormous, pitch-black pig demons with long tusks—third-rank monsters—locked eyes with Gu Xiaoyao as he approached. Unable to hold back anymore, they lunged out.

“Damn humans! How dare you trespass on our territory? Today will be your last!” the lead pig demon roared in fury.

Red-eyed and bristling with raw power, the pig demons charged straight for Gu Xiaoyao, hoping to take him out in one brutal hit.

Gu Xiaoyao watched them barrel forward, a look of disdain flickering across his face.

In the blink of an eye, his figure vanished from sight.

The pig demons barely registered a blur before Gu Xiaoyao disappeared right in front of them.

“Not good!” One pig demon froze in shock, desperately trying to dodge.

But it was too late. Gu Xiaoyao reappeared in their midst, his longsword flashing like lightning as he slashed through their throats.

The pig demons’ bodies went rigid instantly, blood spurting from their necks before they collapsed to the ground.

Their eyes burned with unwillingness and despair, but there was nothing they could do.

“So that’s all? Just a few measly third-rank pig demons?” Gu Xiaoyao sneered at their lifeless bodies.

The surviving pig demons collapsed to their knees, sniffling and sobbing, pleading, “Mighty human, we’re the ones who offended you. Please, show mercy! Spare our lives—we’ll leave right away!”

They stared at Gu Xiaoyao, hoping against hope he’d let them go, and scampered for their lives the second he didn’t move.

But that flicker of hope was quickly snuffed out.

Gu Xiaoyao formed a sword with his fingers, unleashing blades of sword qi that sliced through the pig demons’ massive heads, sending them tumbling to the ground in a spray of blood.

“Did I say you could leave? Actually, I’m starving. Consider your meat payment for scaring us.” Gu Xiaoyao nudged a pig demon’s corpse with his foot and strode over, expression unreadable.

Without breaking a sweat, Gu Xiaoyao hoisted the pig demons’ carcasses over his head and swaggered off as if carrying nothing at all.

His stride was steady and strong—these monstrous bodies seemed like nothing but feathers to him.

When the noise behind him vanished, Xie Jinxuan didn’t think much of it and was about to take a nap. Then came a heavy thud—more than one. The ground shook beneath him and his eyes flew open as he spun around.

To his shock, he saw Gu Xiaoyao tossing several massive pig demons onto the ground.

Each one weighed at least five or six hundred pounds, their thick black fur bristling and tusks jutting out like swords—downright menacing.

“Xiaoyao, impressive work! You were only gone a minute and already brought back monsters this big.” Xie Jinxuan sprang to his feet, dusting off, and hurried over.

“Looks like today’s dinner is finally sorted,” Xie Jinxuan said excitedly, circling the pig demons and sizing them up.

Gu Xiaoyao smiled. “I just ran into them—perfect for topping up our supplies.”

“Your skills keep getting sharper, Xiaoyao. These pig demons look vicious, but you took them out like it was nothing!” Xie Jinxuan clapped Gu Xiaoyao on the shoulder in admiration.

Gu Xiaoyao just chuckled, keeping quiet. Inside, he knew: These pig demons were fierce, but they were no match for him. His martial arts had reached a level where ordinary monsters posed no threat.

“But Xiaoyao, they’re so huge. Won’t they be a pain to process? I don’t even see any nearby water, and barbecuing them would take extra effort,” Xie Jinxuan said, shooting Gu Xiaoyao a questioning look.

Gu Xiaoyao shook his head and gestured off to the side. “No need to worry. There’s a little river right over there, just checked it out. Cleaning these pig demons will be quick—let’s get started before the meat loses its flavor.”

“Well, if you say so, Xiaoyao, let me lend a hand!” Xie Jinxuan replied with a laugh.

Working together, the two easily hoisted the pig demon corpses and made their way toward the river.

Down by the water, they set to work processing the corpses.

Their movements were swift and methodical, as if they’d handled butchering and blood before.

In no time, the pig demons were split and cleaned until nothing was left but fine cuts.

Once they finished, they gathered dry branches and leaves to start a fire for roasting.

Gu Xiaoyao deftly built a simple spit near the riverbank.

Drawing on memories from his past life, Gu Xiaoyao hunted down some seasonings: pepper, cumin, wild ginger, bay leaves, and evodia.

Once everything was ready, their eyes lit up—they rubbed the seasonings all over the pig demons, then speared each one on a long stick.

They set the carcasses over the makeshift grill they’d prepared earlier.

Flicking his fingers, Gu Xiaoyao sparked a little flame in the pile of dry twigs and leaves, which quickly roared to life.

The pig demons sizzled on the fire, fat crackling and dripping.

Soon, golden skins blistered to perfection, the aroma of roasted meat drifting everywhere and setting their mouths watering.

Watching the feast, Xie Jinxuan’s stomach rumbled. He tore off a leg and dug in.

Eyes sparkling, he ate with pure delight, thumb raised in constant praise.

He devoured piece after piece, savoring every bite.

Gu Xiaoyao couldn’t help but laugh at Xie Jinxuan’s ravenous pace.

He grabbed a leg for himself, eating slowly and enjoying the flavor.

The roast was unbelievably tasty, the aftertaste lingering. As they ate and laughed, all their worries faded away.

    ………….

“You have a real eye for spices, Xiaoyao. Who would’ve thought we’d find this many flavors in the middle of nowhere?” Xie Jinxuan said with satisfaction, gnawing his pig leg to the bone.

“The meat is delicious, but honestly, it gets a bit greasy after a while. What a shame we don’t have any wine. If we did, we could really cut loose!” he said with a sigh, setting aside the last scraps.

“No worries—even without wine, we can eat our fill today. There are still more pig demons left for later. No need to hold back!” Gu Xiaoyao threw an arm around Xie Jinxuan and grinned.

The giant pig demon was soon picked clean, laughter and chatter filling the air.
