Chapter 70: No Way Out
by xennovelIt was clear that the pack of wolves wouldn’t let them off easily. Large wolf packs only appeared during the scarce, cold winter to combine their efforts in catching bigger prey and weather the harsh season. However, due to this, their hunting success rate was lower.
In most people’s minds, the more wolves in a pack, the easier it should be to hunt; but in reality, when wolves hunted alone or in pairs, they targeted smaller animals, which resulted in a higher success rate. Large wolf packs went after bigger prey, such as musk oxen and moose, to save the number of hunting attempts and satisfy their needs for survival. Ironically, this reduced their success rate.
In the natural world, a predator’s failed hunting attempt may not have much impact, but death awaited them after multiple failures. The clearest example was the cheetah; they had only five chances, and after five failures, they would starve to death!
Therefore, the lower success rate made the wolf pack more cautious and prepared. They wouldn’t take action easily. This was why the wolves had spared Bi Fang and his companions twice: The first time they met, both sides were testing each other. The second time, there was internal chaos and the alpha wolf believed that the best hunting opportunity had disappeared.
Bi Fang even felt grateful that he had saved these people. They were so close to the wolves’ territory, and if he had been alone, the wolves wouldn’t have been as cautious.
Indeed, these people were ordinary and held them back, but it was precisely because of these five individuals that Bi Fang had the means to confront the wolves and had two chances to survive.
But there would not be a third time!
Bi Fang didn’t like being passive; he preferred taking the initiative. Humans were much bigger than wolves, and apart from their bite force, their strength was notably different. Wolves appeared terrifying primarily because humans had become so accustomed to comfort that they feared pain.
What humans feared was getting injured, but defeating a wolf unarmed and unscathed was practically impossible. This created a strong misconception of wolves’ capabilities.
In nature, having a larger body size was a significant advantage. As long as humans had long spears or similar weapons and didn’t let the wolves get close, they could potentially face one or even two wolves at a time.
“We have to kill them,” Bi Fang looked up at the stunned crowd and repeated himself. “One at a time, pick off the ones separated from the pack, set traps, prepare spears – anything that can help. Once we reduce the number of wolves to less than ten, they won’t pose a threat, and I’ll have enough confidence to lead you all to safety!”
The spectators felt as if they had been struck by lightning, finding it hard to imagine how to deal with the encircling pack of wolves. However, some old fans were ecstatic to see Bi Fang take action against the wolves, just like how he had dealt with the bear!
“But they might do the same to us!” Zheng Tianfang responded gravely. Growing up in Mohe, he had heard elders speak of the horrors of wolf packs and knew they couldn’t keep running. Doing so would only result in slow death.
Hu Hao and the others were equally shocked and had no idea how to face an entire pack of wolves.
“Then we won’t give them a chance!” Bi Fang declared resolutely without waiting for further response. He stood up and started looking for long, straight branches nearby, using his hunting knife to chop them down. He intended to turn these branches into weapons to fend off the wolf pack!
One, two, three…
Under the clear night with dispersing black clouds, the bright, full moon rose. The burning wood chips splattered, and the firewood crackled.
Five people gathered around the bonfire, four of them trembling as they sat, while one young man stood straight. The firelight cast a long shadow on the youth, his face half-illuminated and half-concealed in darkness.
He threw the long pole on the ground, bringing a bundle of long spears as if preparing for battle with the pack of wolves.
Damn, this scene is breathtaking!
The landscape is incredible!
So strong! Bi Fang is amazing!
Aren’t wolves protected animals? Is this okay?
At a time like this, are you worried about protected animals? Are you kidding me?
Burn the forest instead! Animals can’t communicate with people, and I believe the government would understand.
What a terrible idea; even if the fire kills the wolves, we wouldn’t be safe! Besides, if we leave the forest, the wolves won’t stay here either!
Stretched Bamboo Forest gifts the streamer 100 Wolf Teeth – Awesome move, streamer!
Plant a Big Tree gifts the streamer 1 spaceship – Better be careful. But can’t we stall? Just wait until the rescue team arrives.
Shepherd Master gifts the streamer 1 Cosmic Spaceship – Although it’s better to rely on oneself rather than others, this seems really dangerous. But it’s cool!
“Damn, come on, look!” In the dormitory room, Cao Lifeng excitedly shouted, but the other roommates were puzzled.
“What’s with him these days? Always holding his phone and making a scene,” the dorm leader adjusted his glasses, feeling confused.
None of the roommates knew what was going on either.
“He’s watching live streams!” Cao Lifeng showed his phone to his roommates, excitedly introducing them to the amazing Bi Fang. “This streamer is incredibly badass! I couldn’t help but donate a few tens of yuan to him!”
“Are you crazy? Barely able to afford food yet donating to a streamer?” The dorm leader was shocked; this guy had just asked for money from home and now he was donating it to a streamer?
“Seriously, you wouldn’t understand unless you watch it.”
Cao Lifen handed his phone to the dorm leader, and the others couldn’t help but gather around out of curiosity.
“Langya TV? You’re still using this app to watch livestreams?” Upon receiving the phone, the dorm leader glanced at the small logo in the top-right corner and was surprised. This platform was quite outdated, although it had once been quite popular. However, young people had gradually moved on to platforms like Shark and HuChi. Were there still people using it? Even assuming it was once a major platform, it was now in decline. Could there be any formidable streamers left? If they were really so formidable, why not go to Shark or HuChi instead of Langya? Wasn’t that just sabotaging one’s own career?
While thinking this, the dorm leader couldn’t resist Cao Lifen’s enthusiasm and glanced at the content of the stream. When he saw Bi Fang throwing the long pole to the ground, his curiosity was immediately piqued.
“Huh, this composition feels even more amazing than a movie. This streamer has a bit of flair.”
Cao Lifen looked at the dorm leader’s expression and immediately knew that he had got this right. Initially, it was the unconventional picture quality that attracted him to click on the stream. After learning more about the content, he became so engrossed that he’d even forgotten to eat and sleep. He couldn’t help but donate some money, and he couldn’t believe that the dorm leader wouldn’t be drawn in by it as well.
This scene played out similarly in many places across the country. More and more people were recommended by someone nearby and found their way to Bi Fang’s livestream. Even just a glance of it attracted their curiosity, and after digging deeper, they couldn’t bear to let go. Those who didn’t have Langya TV even downloaded it.
It was the ultimate clash between man and wolf, a direct confrontation between life and life.
Was it the triumph of intelligence? Or the tearing apart of all by sharp claws?
Both sides were experienced, seasoned hunters. Whose skills would come out on top?
Everyone watched intently, extremely excited, as a true confrontation was about to begin!
Under such circumstances, even though Bi Fang had been streaming the previous night with low viewer numbers, he still received a notification from the system.
[Ding! Congratulations to the host for completing the first main mission. Rewards will be settled upon completion of all missions!]
