Chapter Index

Little Fox spoke up on purpose.

Lin Zheng Ran looked into the fox’s eyes and realized what she meant, then raised his hand and gave her a swift knock on the head.

    Little Fox yelped in pain.

Lin Zheng Ran said, “Read too many novels, have you? Where’d you pick up all this nonsense?”

Han Wenwen clutched her head with one hand, turned away with a light huff, and sat on the bed, keeping a body’s distance from Lin Zheng Ran.

She avoided looking at him, rubbing her head with one hand while the other rested on her smooth, pale thigh.

“Don’t novels always say that? A guy and a girl spend the night together with nothing to say, and you know what that implies.”

Lin Zheng Ran felt embarrassed. No wonder Heqing said Wenwen always chatted with her about weird stuff.

No doubt about it—he could confirm that most of the inappropriate thoughts in Heqing’s mind came from this fox’s subtle influence.

Just then, Lin Zheng Ran’s phone rang. He pulled it out and saw it was Mom calling.

Han Wenwen didn’t know who it was; she just glanced back at him.

Lin Zheng Ran answered, “Hey, Mom? What’s up?”

Lin Xiao Li asked on the phone, since her son was always out, “Ranran, are you coming home for dinner tonight?”

Little Fox’s eyebrows twitched slightly as she placed a jade-like hand on Lin Zheng Ran’s leg, as if trying to convey something.

Lin Zheng Ran caught her meaningful look and knew what she wanted. “I won’t be back for dinner tonight. I’ll eat out and head home later.”

Lin Xiao Li was used to it by now. “Not coming back again? Alright then. Your dad and I won’t wait. Stay safe out there, Ranran.”

    “Got it, Mom.”

Little Fox heard the call end and couldn’t help but smile, but she turned away and asked innocently,

“So, Brother Zheng Ran isn’t going home—planning to eat out with who tonight?”

Lin Zheng Ran teased her straight-faced. “I set up a meet with a friend this afternoon. After I leave here, I’ll grab dinner with them, so I can’t stay long.”

Han Wenwen spun around, confused. “A friend? Aren’t you eating here?!”

Seeing his playful eyes, Han Wenwen realized he was just messing with her. She glared at him, a mix of anger, helplessness, and shy affection. “Brother Zheng Ran, you’re such a tease. You weren’t like this before.”

Han Wenwen insisted stubbornly, “And I don’t care if you really set something up—you just got here, and you’re not leaving.”

Lin Zheng Ran checked his phone as another message popped up; it was from Lily, asking if he’d gotten home.

While replying, he answered Han Wenwen, “Don’t worry, I’m not going anywhere. But what are we eating tonight? Besides that burnt chicken you made, is there anything else?”

“Of course there is.” Han Wenwen leaned in curiously to peek at who he was messaging. “Who’s that now?”

“Lily, asking if I’ve gotten home.”

    “Lily? Are you done replying?”

“Yeah, done. She said she’s starting dinner and wants me to rest early tonight.”

The clever Little Fox knew exactly what Lily meant by that. Clearly, something had happened between Brother Zheng Ran and Lily these past couple of days.

So, she suddenly blocked his phone screen with her hand, a sly smile on her face,

“Since you’re done, no need to chat more. And Brother Zheng Ran, what’s with calling her Lily now? You used to say her full name.”

Lin Zheng Ran looked up casually. “Just changed it, that’s all.”

Han Wenwen snatched his phone and set it aside, propping herself up on the bed with both hands and leaning in close, staring at him intently as if demanding answers.

“Why? You can’t just change it out of nowhere without a reason, right?”

“What reason could there be? If I want to change it, I change it.”

“Does she know she’s your girlfriend now?”

    “Yeah, you’re pretty sharp.”

Han Wenwen’s eyes filled with jealousy; she huffed and sat there pouting, her cheeks puffed up.

“I knew it! You showed up so late today for a reason. I messaged you around three this afternoon, and now…” She checked the time on her phone,

“It’s past six! I got dressed and waited at home for you the whole time. But you weren’t in any hurry to come, like you didn’t miss me at all.”

Lin Zheng Ran noticed a red mark on Han Wenwen’s ring finger. “The competition held me up, not anything else.” He glanced at her hand.

It looked like she’d scraped it on something.

“What happened to your hand?” he asked.

Han Wenwen looked at her finger, not even aware of it. “I don’t know. Maybe I scraped it while messing with clothes this afternoon. I didn’t even feel it.”

Lin Zheng Ran held out his hand. “Let me see.”

Though jealous, Han Wenwen obediently gave him her hand, and he gently took hold of the fox’s paw.

Her hand was long, fair, and delicate, different from the others—more tender. Lin Zheng Ran lightly touched the small wound.

Han Wenwen furrowed her brow and pursed her lips.

Lin Zheng Ran glanced at her. “Hurts?”

    Little Fox nodded.

    “A little bit.”

“Do you have any band-aids at home?” he asked.

Han Wenwen pointed to the nightstand drawer. “I think there are a few in there. I bought some before.”

Lin Zheng Ran rummaged through it and found one, then opened it and wrapped it around her finger.

Han Wenwen watched his gentle movements, her jealousy and irritation fading; she could never stay mad at Lin Zheng Ran for long.

“There, all done. Try not to get hurt again next time.”

Lin Zheng Ran let go, but Han Wenwen didn’t pull away—instead, she grasped his hand.

“I’ve been thinking about you nonstop these past few days; I didn’t even notice if I got hurt.”

With that, she leaned back against his leg.

Like a lazy fox cozying up to its owner, her tone turned soft:

“I missed you so much I wanted to message you, but I was afraid of interrupting your time with Lily during the competition. Who wants a boyfriend like you, making me think of you all the time…”

She sighed. “I never got why people who chase me get so jealous, but now I do. Knowing the one you like is with someone else hurts like hell.”

Lin Zheng Ran stroked her hair like petting a fox, and she buried her face in his leg.

Her eyes showed deep jealousy and sadness.

“Hey, I came straight here after the competition, knowing you were waiting.” He comforted her.

Han Wenwen sat up and moved closer, right in front of him, her face near his. “Oh yeah? Were you planning to go home, eat, shower, and sleep before coming? By then, your little fox might’ve wasted away waiting in this rental house!”

She spoke slowly. “Don’t you feel bad? Not for a little fox whose heart is all yours?”

Lin Zheng Ran tried to lower his hand, but Han Wenwen protested, “Why’d you stop petting my head?”

Then she saw him open his arms, and she lit up, quickly snuggling into his embrace.

Her face against his chest, arms wrapped around him, all her unhappiness vanished in that moment:

“This is the first time Brother Zheng Ran’s held me. Your arms are so comfortable~”

Lin Zheng Ran held her injured paw.

Han Wenwen asked, “Has Brother Zheng Ran hugged anyone else before?”

    “No, you’re the first.”

Han Wenwen lifted her head, her fox eyes on him. “Really? Not Heqing or Lily? Don’t lie!”

“When have I ever lied to you? But you’re something else—I haven’t been here ten minutes, and you’ve already chattered nonstop. If I didn’t hug you, would you keep going forever?”

“What do you mean chattered? Can’t I act spoiled with my Brother Zheng Ran? Can’t I be jealous?”

Han Wenwen enjoyed his embrace, one hand gripping his shoulder:

“And so what if I chatter? You won’t let me talk to you? Besides, from the first to the sixth, six whole days, you only sent a few messages at night. What good is that?”

Han Wenwen complained, “Even though I’m easy to please, you can’t just brush me off with a few texts. We agreed you’d spoil me on the sixth, so I’ll keep talking until you do. I need you to pamper me and know how much I’ve missed you these days.”

“So, what have you been up to?”

“Thinking about when my Brother Zheng Ran would come.”

    “Be serious.”

    “I am being serious.”

    “Besides that, then?”

Han Wenwen shook her head in his arms, her smooth legs already up on the bed, slightly bent beside his.

Her feet kept brushing against his calf restlessly.

“Just playing games, making videos. But practicing alone feels so slow. I only get better when you’re around—it’s weird. Oh, and I hit Master rank!”

    “Master rank? That’s quick.”

“Your little fox is pretty amazing, right?” She grinned.

“But it’s tougher from here. The next two ranks will take forever. Oh, and I heard about this online game video contest with over 10,000 in prizes. It was supposed to be this half-year,

but I checked this morning, and it’s delayed to the second half. You can do it from home, but it needs duos.”

Han Wenwen looked at Lin Zheng Ran, tapping a finger on his lips. “Brother Zheng Ran, got anything going on in the second half of the year? Join me for the contest? With you there, we’ll win that money easy.”

“I don’t know how to answer that. ‘Second half’ is too vague.”

“But the contest is just getting started; I don’t know the exact date yet.”

Lin Zheng Ran thought it was probably the one organized by Jiang Jingshi.

After all, he’d searched last night, and this was the big one with prizes.

“We’ll wait for the details. I’ll clear my schedule then.” He replied.

Han Wenwen nodded happily. “Deal— you’ll join me at home for it.”

“Sure.” No sooner had he said it than the red sash around Han Wenwen’s waist slipped down.

Revealing her underwear at the top of her thigh.

Lin Zheng Ran glanced over, puzzled. “Wenwen, where’s your safety shorts? You’re just wearing this?”

Han Wenwen noticed his look and blushed, quickly covering up:

“Of course! Why wear safety shorts at home?” She teased, “What kind of face is that, Brother Zheng Ran? I told you, this outfit’s to tempt you. I’m all yours, so what do I have to hide?”

But then she whispered in his ear, “Actually, I forgot. I thought I had them on. Don’t worry, Brother Zheng Ran— I’ll only wear this for you at home.”

    He was speechless.

Snuggled against his chest, Han Wenwen suddenly sniffed like a little dog, catching his scent.

Her expression shifted as she stared at him. “Brother Zheng Ran, what’s that smell on you?”

“What smell? I don’t think I have any.”

    He sniffed himself too.

Han Wenwen said, “Oh, I forgot—you don’t know about this. Let me tell you, I’ve had this special skill since I was little that I never told anyone: my nose is incredibly sharp.”

    “Really?”

“Totally. And it’s not just smelling things briefly— if I focus, I can even pick up scents from days ago, like stuff you’ve been around.”

    “Is that for real?”

Han Wenwen smiled knowingly. “I know you might not believe it, so let me try and tell you what I smell.”

    “Go ahead.”

Little Fox sat up straight and pressed her nose— practically her whole body— against his chest, sniffing carefully. She checked his arms,

then lifted his hand and sniffed that too.

She frowned, glared at him, and sniffed his neck and lips.

Lin Zheng Ran found it amusing. “What’d you get?”

Han Wenwen smirked mysteriously. “Lots of things. Like, you’ve been with Lily lately, and she leaned on your shoulder, right? Not just holding your arm, but right on one side.”

She pointed to his right arm. “That spot. Am I wrong?”

Lin Zheng Ran remembered Lily burying her face in his shoulder before the competition.

    And

Han Wenwen went on. “Plus, she hugged your shoulder?”

Lin Zheng Ran was impressed. “You’re spot-on. That was days ago—how’d you catch that?”

“Impressed? But there’s more.” She sniffed his chest again, then accused, “At first I wasn’t sure, but after sniffing more, I know—there’s another woman’s scent on you.”

    Lin Zheng Ran paused.

Han Wenwen bit her lip, thinking, a finger on her mouth.

“The smell’s faint, with a hint of fancy shampoo. It seems like she bumped into you by accident, not a full hug.”

She took his hand. “And you caught her with this hand, didn’t you?”

It was one of those rare moments that surprised even Lin Zheng Ran.

“That’s some ability. You’ve had it since you were a kid?”

Han Wenwen nodded. “Yeah, but I’m more accurate with you since we’ve known each other so long. A fox knows its owner’s scent best.”

“But if I switched shampoos, could you still tell?”

“Of course! It’s not the shampoo—it’s your unique scent. No matter what you use, I know it. And hey, we’re off track. Who was that girl, Brother Zheng Ran?”

She smiled like it was no big deal, but there was an edge to it. “You’re not aiming for four girlfriends, are you? From the smell, it seems you spent a lot of time with her. Don’t say she’s just some stranger.”

Han Wenwen tugged at his shirt. “This spot has lipstick and makeup remover on it—she wiped it off you.”

Lin Zheng Ran said, “You’re really something.”

“Brother Zheng Ran!” Little Fox couldn’t hold back. “Who is she?”

“Just a friend. She tripped, so I helped her up, and that’s how the lipstick got on me. She wiped it off.”

    “Really?”

    “Of course.”

    “Is she pretty?”

    “She’s alright.”

Han Wenwen clicked her tongue. “Alright means she’s gorgeous—your standards are high! What about compared to me?”

“You two have different styles; I can’t compare. But you’re both attractive.”

Frustrated, Han Wenwen huffed and settled back into his arms.

“I don’t want to talk to you anymore, you flirt. But remember, I only let you have multiple girlfriends because I can’t stop it! It’s not that I’m okay with it or anything—

I just can’t bear to see you unhappy, and I can’t leave you. So even when I’m jealous, I have to deal with it.

I’m actually pretty petty. Even with Heqing, who’s my friend, I don’t like you getting too close to her, let alone others!”

    Han Wenwen asked seriously,

“I’ve been wanting to ask: Be honest, Brother Zheng Ran, how many do you want at most? Don’t say you haven’t thought about it—think now. This is your one chance; if you go over, don’t blame me for my tricks.”

“Tricks? What tricks?” He was curious.

Han Wenwen whispered fiercely yet tenderly in his ear, “My trick is, when I grow up, I’ll wear you out so you won’t look at other girls or even get out of bed.”

Lin Zheng Ran met her serious gaze and thought that if he were ordinary, maybe—but now, it was unlikely.

    He flicked her forehead again.

    “Can you be serious?”

    But Han Wenwen still pouted.

Lin Zheng Ran considered. “Honestly, I haven’t thought about it much. Let me think—okay, I can answer.”

    “Really? Tell me quick.”

Han Wenwen probed carefully. “Three? Four? Not five, right?!”

Lin Zheng Ran blinked. “At most seven. One a day seems about right.”

“Seven?! That’s too many! Does that mean you already like seven girls?” She widened her eyes in shock.

Lin Zheng Ran laughed. “Of course not— I don’t have that many now. But you asked for the maximum, and seven’s my limit. More than that doesn’t make sense.”

“Doesn’t make sense?!” Han Wenwen puffed up. “So seven isn’t enough for you? One a day and you’re not even tired? How do you manage— are you part octopus?”

    “Wenwen?”

Han Wenwen didn’t argue back but seethed with jealousy inside. She grabbed his arm and pretended to bite it hard.

Yet she couldn’t bring herself to actually hurt him.

“Too many! Cut it down!” Then she sighed. “What’s the point? If that’s what you want, you’ll do it anyway.”

“No, I said that’s the cap. As long as it’s less than seven, it’s fine.”

Han Wenwen pointed at his mouth, annoyed. “But you said this is the only chance—no going over seven!”

    “Yeah, I did.”

    “You better mean it!”

    “I do.”

“Then promise me something—not a new ask, but what you promised before: No matter how many girlfriends, I’m the one you spoil most. Not anyone else!”

“Am I not spoiling you enough? You’ve called me out of the blue more than anyone since high school.”

She shook his arm close to his face. “Promise me? I don’t need extras or anything—I just want more of your time, even a little. Like sneaking over today. Okay?”

Lin Zheng Ran nodded slowly. “But you’ve been hiding our thing from Heqing and Lily for this, right?”

Han Wenwen bit her lip excitedly. “Not hiding it exactly. I’m just your secret little fox.” She whispered in his ear,

“In my heart, you’re like my owner—everything about me belongs to you, so it’s special.”

“I’m just your secret little fox. In my heart, you’re like my owner—everything about me belongs to you, so it’s special.”
