Chapter 147: Whispers in the Twilight
by xennovelIn the parking area of a park, families and couples filled the grounds with playful scenes.
Though from a wealthy background, Jiang Jingshi loved spending quiet moments alone in places like this.
She sat in her car with legs crossed, gazing at the neighborhood scenery while glancing down at Lin Zheng Ran’s reply:
“I think the second earring photo suits you better. Even though you have a gentle vibe, Jiang Jie, that cooler style actually fits you more. It’s just a comparison, though—overall, both look great.”
Seeing the message, Jiang Jingshi’s red lips curved into a smile.
Her face softened as she murmured to herself, “He thinks the cooler earrings suit me better?”
She considered sending Lin Zheng Ran something in return.
But then her phone popped up with a message from a Jiang Group employee.
It was about a tough client the sales department still hadn’t closed a deal with. Jiang Jingshi replied, “Send someone to negotiate again.”
After sending that, Jiang Jingshi suddenly thought of something.
If Lin Zheng Ran is talented in so many areas, does that include business too?
If he does, she could outsource the Jiang Group’s promotional work to a company they start together.
That way, she wouldn’t have to juggle everything, avoiding double work and extra stress.
Smiling to herself, she blinked and said, “But if he’s that versatile, it’s almost unbelievable. I’ll test it next time we meet.”
Her eyes returned to Lin Zheng Ran’s message: “As for the cooler styles, I’ll just go with what he likes from now on… it should look great.”
Inside Han Wenwen’s rental house.
Lin Zheng Ran leaned back against the headboard, with the jealous Little Fox curled up, her legs tucked and upper body draped across his lap.
Little Fox’s paws playfully scratched at Lin Zheng Ran’s stomach.
One hand stroking her head, the other on his phone, Lin Zheng Ran replied to messages from Heqing and Lily.
He had to handle them all at once.
Han Wenwen glanced at him occasionally and asked, “Haven’t finished replying to them yet?”
Lin Zheng Ran hummed, “Almost done, just a few lines.”
Hearing it wasn’t over, Han Wenwen let out a soft, discontented whine from her throat and closed her eyes, savoring the feel of his hand in her hair.
Like a pet soaking up affection from its owner.
“That other sister didn’t explain things clearly earlier, and now Xiao Qingqing and Lily are jumping in… it’s endless.”
“What’s unclear about it? I said what I needed to.”
Han Wenwen’s voice held a hint of complaint, but it came out sweet and playful:
“Oh please, when a girl asks a guy which jewelry looks better, it’s either fishing for compliments or she likes you. But fishing? What girl could hook Brother Zheng Ran? She’d have to be amazing—I’d want to learn from her. So, it’s obvious she likes you.”
As she spoke, Han Wenwen nestled her face against Lin Zheng Ran’s chest, trying to burrow deeper into his embrace.
“Still, it’s normal for girls to like Brother Zheng Ran. It’s all about whether you want to keep them around.”
She nuzzled his stomach with her head.
Lin Zheng Ran looked at her. “What are you doing?”
Han Wenwen opened her enchanting fox eyes. “Stop chatting with them~ Come talk to me properly.”
Lin Zheng Ran sighed, “Haven’t I been with you all along?” He finished his last few messages.
Putting down his phone, he said, “Okay, done. What do you want to talk about seriously?”
Han Wenwen looked up at Lin Zheng Ran.
Lin Zheng Ran looked down at Han Wenwen.
Their four eyes locked, each reflecting the other.
They stared in silence for a while until Han Wenwen’s face flushed with shyness and she smiled, glancing away. “Why are you staring like that, Brother Zheng Ran? It’s making me blush.”
“You said you wanted to chat seriously. I’m waiting for you to start.” He didn’t get it.
Han Wenwen huffed, “It’s not about topics or anything. I just don’t want you chatting with others, even if you’re just sitting here with me. I hate you talking to other girls, especially when you’re supposed to be with me.”
Then she noticed Lin Zheng Ran’s toenails and leaned in. “Let me trim your nails, Brother Zheng Ran. Yours don’t look neat at all.”
“What’s the point of neat nails for a guy? And mine aren’t even long—I trimmed them last week.”
“Who trimmed them?”
“Me, of course.”
Han Wenwen turned back with a serious tone. “From now on, no more trimming your own nails, Brother Zheng Ran. That’s my job.” She got up to fetch the nail clippers and returned to bed.
“Keep stroking my head, or I won’t focus on clipping.”
“How can I stroke your head while you clip my nails? You’re too far away.”
“Just curl your legs up, then you can reach.”
Lin Zheng Ran was at a loss but complied, reaching out again. He’d never seen a girl so obsessed with head pets—it was like dealing with a real fox.
As soon as his hand touched her head, Han Wenwen calmed down instantly.
She carefully clipped his nails and even prepared wet wipes for cleaning and foot care, handling everything.
While doing this, she remembered something important. “Oh right, Brother Zheng Ran, there’s something I’ve been wanting to discuss.”
“What is it?”
She clipped meticulously and gently:
“Once you’re the head of the household with all these girlfriends, we should divide up responsibilities. Otherwise, we’ll just fight over the little things and it will get messy.”
She smiled back. “So, how about I assign roles today? I’m good at noticing everyone’s habits and strengths—it’s totally fair.”
Lin Zheng Ran let her continue; it was his day off anyway.
After finishing one foot, she moved to the other:
“Starting with Xiao Qingqing. She’s steady and doesn’t like the spotlight. Once we’re all working after graduation, she’ll probably stick to home stuff—maybe occasional Taekwondo events—but mostly handling daily chores like arranging the house or buying what we need. She should call the shots on that, right, Brother Zheng Ran?”
Lin Zheng Ran nodded. “Heqing is pretty much like that—very homemaking.”
Han Wenwen grinned proudly and handed him paper and pen. “Write it down! That’s how we’ll do it when we all live together!”
Lin Zheng Ran jotted down what she said.
Once both feet were done, she started on his hands, even switching to a different clipper and sitting on his lap.
Legs spread out like a duck, facing him, she took his hand.
Lin Zheng Ran extended his left hand as she worked and talked. “Then there’s Lily. She’s energetic—I thought she was just tsundere, but she’s more evolved. At home, she could handle kids, like playing with them and educating them.”
Lin Zheng Ran chuckled. “That’s way in the future, and taking care of kids isn’t easy.”
Han Wenwen explained:
“I know, so it’s not all on her. Just the education part. I’m great with you, Brother Zheng Ran, but I’m a bit strict with kids. Xiao Qingqing’s too soft and would spoil them. Lily’s just right—firm when needed, gentle otherwise, and fun. She’s perfect for it. So, in the future, when we have little ones with you, we’ll each care for our own, but for education, we listen to Lily. Sound good?”
Lin Zheng Ran smiled and nodded. “Sure.”
After finishing that hand, she had him note it down and moved to the last one:
“Finally, me. I’m best at one thing: taking care of Brother Zheng Ran. So, stuff like helping you change, trim nails, give massages, even wash your hair or brush your teeth—leave it all to me.”
Her fox eyes glanced at him slyly.
Lin Zheng Ran met her gaze, and they both laughed.
He teased, “So, I won’t have to lift a finger?”
Han Wenwen finished the fingers and intertwined theirs, leaning close. “Of course not for the small stuff. But you’ll handle the big decisions—you’re the head of the house, our rock.”
