Chapter Index

Lin Zheng Ran took a taxi to Zheng Shi Company headquarters.

At that moment, in the general manager’s office on the seventh floor of Zheng Shi Company, Jiang Jingshi held a freshly unwrapped piece of white soft cloth.

She was personally wiping down Lin Zheng Ran’s desk.

Today, Jiang Jingshi had put in the most effort with her appearance in recent days, though she still wore her usual women’s suit.

    Overall, it hadn’t changed much.

But in reality, almost every little detail from head to toe was newly updated.

Her hairstyle was specially done by a stylist yesterday; what was once shapeless from long hours of work now had soft waves again.

The silver necklace and earrings were newly bought, along with today’s inner shirt—all carefully selected.

Even her nails were manicured last night.

She took a hot shower that morning.

Her whole demeanor radiated a fresh energy, different from usual.

Secretary Pan Lin walked in from outside the office and knocked on the door: “Boss Jiang.”

Jiang Jingshi looked at her, smiling as she asked: “Has Lin Zheng Ran arrived?”

Pan Lin shook her head, amazed at how unusually good Boss Jiang’s mood was today compared to the past few days:

“Not yet. I told the gate guard to let me know as soon as he arrives. I just messaged him asking if he wanted a company car, but he said no, he’d take a taxi.”

Jiang Jingshi nodded: “Alright, let him come as he likes. He and Lily always took taxis when they went to Zheng Shi Music before.”

Pan Lin held the files in her hand: “These are from the finance department.”

“Okay, just put them there. I’ll go over them with him later.”

    “Got it.”

Pan Lin entered the office and placed the files on the coffee table already piled high with documents. It looked like discussing all this work would keep Lin Zheng Ran here all day.

She set the files down and glanced back to see Jiang Jingshi still meticulously wiping the desk: “Boss Jiang, let me handle that. Lin Zheng Ran should be here any minute. You should go wash your hands.”

Jiang Jingshi finished the last corner and handed the white soft cloth to Secretary Pan Lin: “How does my makeup look today?”

Jiang Jingshi had gone for light makeup, just touching up her lips and face a bit. Pan Lin smiled: “You already asked me once this morning. It’s perfect, not a flaw in sight.”

    “That’s good.”

Jiang Jingshi went to wash her hands while Pan Lin carefully straightened the items on the desk.

In fact, Pan Lin had already cleaned the office thoroughly that morning, but Jiang Jingshi was so attentive that she went over everything herself again.

A message pinged on the phone.

Pan Lin looked up with a smile: “Boss Jiang, the gate guard says Lin Zheng Ran is here!”

“Really?!” Jiang Jingshi, back from washing her hands, beamed with joy and hurried to the floor-to-ceiling window, gazing toward the company entrance with bright, gentle eyes.

She spotted a taxi pulling up at the street outside the company gate.

Pan Lin offered: “I’ll go down and greet him, tell him you’re waiting here.”

    Jiang Jingshi agreed: “Go ahead.”

The company gate guards, who usually stayed in their office, were all outside today, not a single one inside.

In fact, there were four of them on duty.

Including the security captain and his deputy.

They all stood at attention, and among them, the young security guard who had just started two months ago was curious. He whispered: “Captain, Deputy, who’s coming today? This is a big setup.”

The security captain, a thirty-something former soldier, replied: “Our company’s general manager. Supposedly arriving today.”

“The general manager?” The young guard asked while standing post: “Isn’t that Boss Jiang? The really beautiful one.”

“Boss Jiang is the deputy. The general manager is someone else. I thought it was her at first too, but after being here longer, I found out otherwise. Our general manager is a young person who doesn’t come often, so you wouldn’t know him.”

The young guard murmured: “Oh, so it’s a young person. Same as Boss Jiang? Around twenty? How come all our company’s bosses are so young?”

The captain didn’t nod, just smiled: “You’ve got a lot to learn. You’ll see when he arrives. Oh, looks like he’s here!”

He quickly sent a message to Pan Lin.

The young guard stood straight, wondering what kind of car the big boss would arrive in.

But when he looked, the street had no luxury cars—just an Audi A4 and a taxi approaching.

He thought, maybe the boss is driving the A4? That’s pretty low-key.

The taxi and the Audi stopped at the same time. A middle-aged man in his forties got out of the Audi—he was from the procurement department’s deputy minister. He hadn’t noticed the taxi at first and started walking, but then something clicked.

He instinctively glanced back at the young man stepping out of the taxi.

Shocked, he turned back quickly to greet and shake hands, whispering: “Lin Zheng Ran? You’re at the company?”

Lin Zheng Ran had an excellent memory, so he recognized all the key staff he’d met before and shook hands in return.

Just then, Pan Lin jogged over from the office building. As Jiang Jingshi’s secretary, Pan Lin held a high position in the company, and many directors and ministers greeted her first.

The security captain nodded quickly: “Pan Jie.”

Pan Lin asked: “Where’s Lin Zheng Ran?”

The security captain pointed: “He’s already gotten out!”

“Understood.” Pan Lin went to welcome him, but the young guard whispered to the captain: “Captain, our boss isn’t young at all. He’s got to be around forty, right?”

The security captain sighed: “You’ve been here nearly a month and still don’t recognize people. That forty-something is our procurement department’s deputy minister. The seventeen- or eighteen-year-old is our general manager.”

“The seventeen- or eighteen-year-old? He’s the boss at that age?!”

The security captain chuckled: “Time to broaden your horizons. I was shocked my first time too, but don’t underestimate Lin Zheng Ran. Even though he’s young, he’s incredibly capable. They say the company’s rapid growth over the last two years is all thanks to him.

Anyway, stay sharp. Lin Zheng Ran is a good guy—if he takes a liking to you and chats, you might get some surprises.”

    “Huh?”

    “Just depends on your luck.”

In the distance, Lin Zheng Ran finished shaking hands with the procurement deputy minister, and Pan Lin reached his side: “Lin Zheng Ran, you’re here.”

Lin Zheng Ran was always polite to Pan Lin, since they’d known each other for a while.

“Pan Jie, long time no see.”

Pan Lin felt flattered: “You don’t have to call me that. Just use my full name. Boss Jiang is already waiting in your office.”

“I’m used to it. Let’s head up then.”

Lin Zheng Ran led the way toward the company building, with Pan Lin and the deputy minister following.

The security captain said respectfully: “Good morning, Lin Zheng Ran!”

Lin Zheng Ran smiled at him and noticed the new guard: “You’re new?”

The young guard nodded quickly: “Lin Zheng Ran, I’m Jiang Ming. I’ve been here two months, still in my internship.”

    “Keep up the good work.”

Lin Zheng Ran continued toward the office building and casually asked Pan Lin:

“Is the internship period three months at our company? I thought it was one month before?”

Pan Lin nodded: “Yes, because Boss Jiang revised the welfare policy. With so many new hires in the past year, it was changed six months ago.”

Lin Zheng Ran acknowledged it and didn’t ask more. Jiang Jingshi was a genius at company operations, so he didn’t micromanage everything.

As the new guard passed by Lin Zheng Ran, thinking luck wasn’t on his side, Pan Lin glanced back at the young man: “New guy, move your internship up by a month. Go to admin to handle the paperwork later.”

    The young guard was surprised.

Once Lin Zheng Ran and Pan Lin were out of earshot, the security captain smiled: “Kid, you’re lucky. You’ll get an extra month’s pay for turning pro early. Let me tell you, even though Lin Zheng Ran doesn’t come often, his word carries the most weight in this company.”
