Chapter 308: Unexpected Family Triumph
by xennovelAfter learning the truth, the couple sat on the bed with their legs tucked up.
Lin Xiao Li clung to her husband’s arm while Lin Ying Jun scoured his phone for news and obscure posts about Zheng Shi Company from recent years.
Lin Xiao Li pointed at the phone and exclaimed, “Look at this news, then that one! And check out that one too!”
Lin Ying Jun stared numbly at all the articles, utterly shocked, as if in a dream.
It wasn’t until hours later, after scrolling through countless posts, that Lin Ying Jun finally snapped back to reality and bolted upright in bed.
He turned and stared blankly at his wife.
Lin Xiao Li jumped, seeing her husband’s unusual move. “Honey, what’s wrong? Why did you suddenly sit up like that, like a spring popping?”
Lin Ying Jun’s lips curved into a grin as he excitedly grabbed his wife’s shoulders:
“Honey! Doesn’t this mean we’re going to be rich second-gen from now on? We won’t have to worry about money for big things anymore!”
“Of course!” Lin Xiao Li smiled. “From now on, we’re the rich second-gen, and Zheng Ran is the first-gen!” She added quietly, “Though it feels a bit off, it’s true!”
That evening, Lin Zheng Ran returned home from Zheng Shi Company after finishing his work.
He knocked on the door outside but got no response; it seemed his parents weren’t home.
But as soon as he used his key to open the door,
suddenly, two loud pops rang out, and colorful confetti and streamers rained down from above.
There stood Lin Xiao Li and Lin Ying Jun, holding confetti guns, with banners hung up and balloons decorating the room.
Together, they raised their hands and cheered, “Welcome home, General Manager Zheng Ran! Long live Zheng Ran, our son!”
Lin Zheng Ran froze in embarrassment.
“Mom, Dad, what are you two up to? Have you lost it?”
They rushed over and hugged him tightly.
Lin Xiao Li said emotionally, “Zheng Ran, you’ve made me so proud!”
Lin Ying Jun hugged him too, tears streaming down his face. “Son, you’re my greatest pride! I never imagined you’d achieve so much— you’ve truly impressed me!”
Lin Xiao Li sobbed,
“I used to call you every night when you weren’t home, thinking you were out having fun, but you were actually busy with all this. I won’t bother you anymore— as long as it’s company stuff, I won’t nag. My son is amazing!”
Lin Zheng Ran felt awkward, thinking, My mom doesn’t nag me that often anyway.
After all, you two get along so well; when I’m not home, you’re probably enjoying your time as a couple.
Sometimes when I come back in the morning, I even see unswept rose petals on your bedroom floor.
Lin Xiao Li looked at Lin Zheng Ran. “Come on, let me give you a few kisses! Mua, mua, mua!”
Lin Ying Jun added, “Son, let me kiss you too! Mua, mua, mua!”
Lin Zheng Ran felt the slobber on both cheeks and despaired.
His face felt so grimy.
That night, the family of three enjoyed a lavish meal, buzzing with excitement.
Though the news was huge, Lin Ying Jun, as the head of the household, quickly calmed down and brought up a few matters during dinner.
For example: “Zheng Ran, even though you’re well-off now, your mom and I won’t ask for money unless we absolutely need it. Also, we won’t go around blabbing about you being the general manager—that’ll save us a lot of trouble.”
And other things that were somewhat important but not crucial.
A few days later, the college entrance exam results came out.
Uniformly across the province, high school students were anxiously checking their scores on the official website.
Lin Ying Jun and Lin Xiao Li knew the results would be available that morning, so they sat glued to the computer screen.
They waited like hunters, staring at the monitor without a word.
Lin Zheng Ran, on the other hand, didn’t care at all; he lay in bed watching his parents huddle around the laptop on his bedside.
Lin Xiao Li, arm linked with her husband’s, asked, “How do you think Zheng Ran did?”
Lin Ying Jun shook his head. “Hard to say, but he should be fine. Our Zheng Ran’s been a genius since he was little, inheriting my smarts early on.”
“And mine too.”
Lin Zheng Ran yawned speechlessly and rolled over.
Lin Xiao Li turned back. “Zheng Ran, aren’t you going to check your scores? This is a once-in-a-lifetime big event.”
Lin Zheng Ran waved it off. “Not interested.”
Mom Lin Xiao Li sighed in admiration, giving a thumbs-up. “No wonder you’re a big entrepreneur—your mindset is on another level, like a statesman with a big heart.”
Husband Lin Ying Jun added, “Our son really has style, just like me.”
Lin Zheng Ran: “.”
Finally, they could check the scores. Lin Ying Jun quickly entered his son’s exam number and other details on the official site.
After confirming everything was correct, he warned his wife, “I’m about to check!”
“Okay, this is so tense,” Lin Xiao Li said, wringing her hands.
“Query!”
Lin Ying Jun clicked the mouse.
Then
the couple stared nervously at the screen, only to see no scores displayed—just an asterisk.
All the subject results were invisible too.
They both looked puzzled.
Lin Xiao Li asked her husband, “What’s this? No scores? Is the page glitching? Refresh it!”
She noticed Lin Ying Jun’s hand hadn’t moved; after his confusion, his eyes suddenly lit up.
“Husband? Refresh it already! What’s the hold-up?”
But Lin Ying Jun said, “Wait, just wait! Let me refresh first. Don’t rush.”
After refreshing, it was still the same.
Lin Ying Jun frowned. “Why’s this happening? Can’t pull up the scores. Is the computer busted?”
Lin Ying Jun widened his eyes at his wife and whispered, “Top 50 in the province.”
“Huh?”
“I mean, our Zheng Ran’s in the top 50 in the province!”
“Huh? How do you know?”
Lin Ying Jun looked at his not-so-academic wife. “Because they don’t show scores for the top 50 in the province! So our son’s results are in the top 50!” He turned to his son. “Zheng Ran, you’re in the top 50 province-wide!”
As soon as he spoke, Lin Zheng Ran picked up his silenced phone, which showed a flood of calls that had been coming in since earlier.
They weren’t from the Three Little Ones or the company folks.
But from various university admissions teams.
Lin Zheng Ran said, “You guys are slow; I figured it out from the calls hitting my phone minutes ago.”
His parents exchanged glances and leaped up in excitement.
Once again, they hugged their son and showered him with kisses.
Lin Xiao Li cried, “Zheng Ran, Zheng Ran, let me kiss you more! Mua, mua, mua! You’re my pride—I’m over the moon, ha ha ha!”
Lin Ying Jun joined in, “Son, son! Let me kiss you too! Mua, mua, mua! You’re my biggest pride—you’re incredibly handsome!”
Lin Zheng Ran, not wanting to say more, grumbled under the barrage, “I just washed my face and lay down.”
Lin Xiao Li exclaimed excitedly, “So what? Just stay in bed; I’ll wash it for you later. Don’t worry! But on that note…” She suddenly asked her husband,
“Honey, Zheng Ran’s a big boss now. Is it weird for him to go to college after that? Seems like the order’s backward?”
Lin Ying Jun paused mid-kiss and blinked. “Good question, dear. I don’t have an answer for that.”
