Chapter 106: A Gift for Sister
by xennovelAbove the distant crowd, a bloated, terrifying monster slowly writhed.
Its entire body was composed of countless human faces. These faces were even alive, constantly shifting through various expressions, their lips opening and closing. Where its body passed, broken vehicles crumpled under its weight and neat lines of standing people began to topple uniformly to either side.
Its destruction of this world was silent.
And the consumption of human life seemed just as silent for it.
The Mental Monster had reached a terrifying scale. Because of this scale, a creature that was originally easy to deal with now exuded an indescribable sense of dread after its body had swelled to such proportions.
It felt as though a single glance would cause one to be devoured, becoming just another one of its countless bloated faces.
…
…
“Very good, thank you!”
Opposite the monster, Lu Xin heard Mom’s reply and nodded lightly, his expression serious.
He stepped forward easily, his calm breathing exceptionally clear in the surrounding deathly silence. All around, the lifeless eyes in the scattered corpses on the ground seemed to cross paths near him, as if watching from behind as his somewhat lonely figure, silhouetted against the distant ruins, slowly approached the suffocatingly large shadow of the monster.
The lights from the High Wall behind him cast stiff beams forward.
His figure under the floodlights looked utterly ordinary compared to the distant monster.
But the sight of him walking towards that terrifying human-faced monster put his Sister greatly on guard.
She no longer dared to approach Lu Xin, her expression looked like she was about to cry, and she even seemed poised to flee at any moment.
“Your idea is very reasonable. Of course Mom supports it.”
Mom looked at Lu Xin, her expression somewhat subtle.
But her face only showed an approving smile, and she even clapped lightly.
Then, she smiled:
“It’s just… besides dealing with this monster, who else do you want to deal with?”
Lu Xin hesitated slightly, turning his head to look at Mom. “No one else.”
Mom kept smiling and shook her head gently. “There is.”
Lu Xin fell silent. He felt Mom’s attitude right now was a bit strange.
Just over ten kilometers away, in a dilapidated apartment building, Father was pacing back and forth in his room, consumed by rage. He would occasionally go to the window, his scarlet eyes staring fixedly outside, then move to the doorway, pacing restlessly there.
Mom’s smile remained unchanged, elegant and proper, as if discussing what groceries to buy for dinner.
Mom pointed towards the people still standing and said with a smile, “I know you’ve always wanted to let *him* out…”
“But after *he* comes out, the number of people dealt with might be more than you imagine…”
“For example, these people who are still alive…”
“For example, everyone in this entire Satellite City…”
…
Lu Xin froze slightly.
But Mom laughed very happily, seemingly taking pleasure in his misfortune:
“Of course, if you’re aiming for a clean sweep, Mom still supports you.”
She said this, clenching her fist tightly. “Go for it.”
…
…
Lu Xin, who had been clenching his jaw with a very calm expression, suddenly showed a trace of hesitation.
He hesitated for a moment, then asked, “According to your opinion, what should I do now?”
Mom’s smile didn’t fade. “Do you trust your family?”
Lu Xin fell silent for a moment.
His family… wasn’t his real family. They took him in after the Orphanage was destroyed. Now, he couldn’t even recall how they took him in; it just felt like they suddenly appeared and had been with him for a long time. Each of these family members had their own bad habits, and sometimes they even encouraged him to do bad things…
They seemed to have their own secrets, hiding them only from him.
Every one of them seemed incredibly powerful, while only he was an ordinary person.
How could he trust a family like this?
Thinking this, he nodded lightly and said, “I trust them!”
Mom smiled happily, her eyes seeming to see through everything, but she didn’t expose Lu Xin’s thoughts.
“Since you trust your family, then of course you should ask your family for help.”
Mom grinned, her gaze shifting slightly to where Sister was.
Lu Xin instinctively looked over too and saw Sister looking warily at him and Mom. As if worried about being tricked by the two of them, she arched her body like a little black cat and bared sharp fangs at Lu Xin.
“You’ve always been borrowing Sister’s power, but have you ever truly trusted her?”
Mom sounded like she was mediating between two disobedient children: “Sister might be a bit mischievous, a bit ugly, and a bit awkward, but she’s still very attached to you. You worry Sister will go bad, so you’re always wary of her, but have you ever thought about truly trusting her?”
Lu Xin suddenly understood Mom’s words, a tremor running through him.
Of course he didn’t trust her.
Sister was someone who liked toys that were different from others’.
If he didn’t keep a close eye on her, there would be problems.
But Sister had indeed followed him and handled so many things…
After a long pause, Lu Xin slowly asked, “Can I trust her?”
Mom beamed. “Do you choose to trust her?”
…
…
The question seemed to stump Lu Xin.
After a moment, he asked softly, “What are you trying to tell me?”
“What I want to tell you is…”
Mom’s smile suddenly turned mysterious. “You’ve always borrowed Sister’s ability…”
“But have you ever thought about lending your ability to Sister?”
…
A bizarre thought sprouted in Lu Xin’s mind.
He felt the veins by his temples pulsing slightly, some emotion stirring within him.
“Do you really think you’re particularly ordinary?”
Mom’s smile grew even more mysterious as she gazed gently at Lu Xin:
“You can enter the range of others’ ability influence just like an ordinary person, but surely you’ve noticed you always remain conscious within their ability range, right? You can hear that sound only ordinary people can hear, but do you think that’s because your mental level is as low as an ordinary person’s, or because you’re higher than other Ability Users?”
…
Lu Xin understood Mom’s meaning.
Actually, he had known these things all along, having discovered them long ago.
…
…
The situation was urgent. Every extra second of hesitation meant more deaths.
So, after only two seconds of thought, Lu Xin made his decision.
“I trust you!”
He said, looking at Mom.
Then he slowly raised his head and looked towards Sister. “I trust Sister too.”
Because his gaze was somewhat strange at this moment, Sister instinctively took a few steps back, full of wariness.
But after looking at Sister, Lu Xin suddenly broke into a smile.
He raised his hand, pointed at the giant human-faced monster in the distance, and said, “Sister, haven’t you always wanted a toy?”
“How about I give this one to you?”
…
Sister froze, her small face showing astonishment and disbelief.
However, this expression quickly turned into excitement and joy. She straightened up and ran rapidly towards Lu Xin.
She leaped into the air, spreading her small arms beneath the Red Moon.
Lu Xin stood there quietly, letting Sister jump onto his back like a pouting child and wrap her arms around his neck.
Mom watched the two happy children from the side, smiling blissfully.
Meanwhile, in the apartment building over ten kilometers away, Father let out a tremendous roar. The sound seemed to shake the entire building, even penetrating deep underground, yet no one could hear such a powerful shout. In this city, all the people lost in panic, all those gripped by fear, had no idea what was happening at this moment.
…
…
It was also at this moment that Lu Xin crouched down, a sinister and eerie smile spreading across his face.
Then he suddenly started running, charging forward like a twisted, bizarre monster.
His speed increased rapidly, the excited gleam in his eyes growing brighter.
“Thank you, Brother…”
In the rushing wind whipping past him, Sister’s cheerful laughter could be faintly heard: “…for giving me this big toy…”
