Chapter 186: Monsters in Human Skin
by xennovelLu Xin’s heart sank slightly.
He’d encountered a coffee shop clerk who could sprout tentacles from his body seen monsters stitched together from human faces seen a man who multiplied into sixteen when killed and even encountered the Queen… Some of those monsters were bizarre others were frenzied but none of them had ever made his heart pound and his scalp tingle like the scenes unfolding before him now.
Each person each scene felt more terrifying than any monster.
It wasn’t just terrifying it was deeply unsettling…
…More frightening than monsters are monsters wearing human skin!
Walking through this hell Lu Xin ignored everyone and rushed straight upstairs.
The moment he stepped into the twelfth-floor hallway he saw a sight that made his heart clench.
There were surprisingly many people on the twelfth floor…
Lu Xin didn’t see the two Mental Monsters but he saw the drunkard’s apartment door wide open. In the hallway lines of sneaky people gathered. They tiptoed their eyes darting around warily yet gleaming with a strange mix of triumph and gloom.
Judging by their clothes they all seemed to be the drunkard’s neighbors.
Everyone held a weapon whether it was a kitchen knife a dagger an electric baton or even…
They formed a line entering the drunkard’s home one by one.
At this moment Lu Xin was still borrowing his Mom’s ability. In his vision he could not only see the eerie dark color of these neighbors’ mental entities but also witness their actions after entering the drunkard’s home.
They crept into the drunkard’s parents’ room brandishing their kitchen knives and daggers hacking down fiercely.
Cotton stuffing flew blood splattered landing on everyone’s face.
Then wiping the blood from their faces they queued up again satisfied leaving the opportunity for the next person.
“Could it be…”
Lu Xin’s heart jolted then he heard faint heavy thuds from upstairs.
Stopping in his tracks Lu Xin pushed off his toes twisting forcefully and charged upstairs.
The drunkard’s parents had been hacked to such an extent they were long dead. There was no point going back in.
Through his “Mom vision” Lu Xin could even see that there was no mental fluctuation coming from the two mutilated bodies.
Beyond saving.
Having made his judgment Lu Xin didn’t hesitate taking large strides and reaching the next floor’s hallway in just two seconds.
Planting his feet on the hallway wall Lu Xin turned his head to look inside immediately assaulted by a thick stench of blood. He saw the hallway crammed with grotesque bloody bodies looking like skinned flesh—the forms of the two Mental Monsters. They squeezed into the narrow passage their massive bodies constantly writhing filling almost every inch of space.
The light in the hallway was extremely dim a dark red bloody hue filling his vision.
Huge masses of flesh writhed slowly serpent-like tentacles weaving back and forth in the cramped space.
Although these Mental Monsters were enormous nearly blocking Lu Xin’s entire view.
From Lu Xin’s perspective however his gaze seemed to penetrate them.
It was as if Lu Xin’s vision had split in two his left and right eyes seeing different things.
So one eye saw a hallway full of monsters while the other saw only distorted air.
Was this because the two types of vision overlapped?
Ordinary people looking here wouldn’t see the true form of the Mental Monsters they’d only see masses of distorted oppressive air. Lu Xin however could see the Mental Monsters’ true appearance but he also possessed the perception of an ordinary person. So now with the monsters jamming the entire hallway he essentially had two kinds of vision acting on him simultaneously.
Therefore he could see the monsters and his sight could also pass through them to see the Drunkard being chased by these two monsters down the hallway.
This Drunkard still looked like that high school student ponytail sneakers the picture of youthful energy. Yet this female high school student was darting through the narrow confines of the building dodging the pursuit and bites of tentacle after tentacle.
“Hiss…”
The monster with the Human Head Necklace let out a piercing shriek from the large mouth on its abdomen peeling away layers of the wall surface.
That cry was like chaotic seawater crashing into one’s mind.
The fleeing Drunkard’s body seemed affected by the cry staggering slightly. Then the ivy-like monster flowed rapidly across the wall towards her all its tentacles shooting forward simultaneously weaving into a black waterfall. At the crest of the waterfall mouths split open one after another biting fiercely.
Just as it seemed the Drunkard had nowhere left to dodge she suddenly looked up shot backward like a streak of smoke straight towards the window and with a ‘whoosh’ jumped out. Right behind her the snake heads burst out in pursuit.
Mid-air the Drunkard twisted around pulling both hands to her left waist then thrust them forward simultaneously.
She shouted: “Hasagi!”
…
…
“Bang…”
A ball of white energy shot from between the Drunkard’s hands slamming directly into the ivy monster.
It had some effect several tentacles on the ivy monster snapped instantly and the eyes on those tentacles burst open.
But this level of injury clearly didn’t significantly affect the monsters. Instead they became even greedier scrambling quickly down the building.
“Boom!”
The high-school-student-dressed Drunkard landed in a one-knee kneel seemingly cratering the ground.
Then she immediately leaped up turned around and… ran!
Behind her the ivy-like monster immediately scaled the building face chasing after her.
The fat sturdy Mental Monster wrapped in the Human Head Necklace also shifted its bulk moving forward.
“It can do that?”
Lu Xin was already rushing forward seeing the Drunkard’s exaggerated movements from afar. He too was a bit surprised.
But he didn’t have time to think too much right now.
He had been trying to figure out how to use his Father’s ability unable to grasp the feeling. But when the fat Mental Monster opened its mouth screaming and releasing intense radiation he was quickly overwhelmed by an indescribable anger a coldness enveloping his entire body.
Yet this anger brought him an unusual sense of ease.
Normally his emotions were mostly calm sometimes feeling faint happiness or curiosity.
Feelings of anger were rare.
This was why his earlier attempt to forcefully borrow his Father’s ability had completely failed.
But now that feeling of anger suddenly surged within him.
Instantly it was like opening floodgates unstoppable.
He didn’t even know if this should be called anger or perhaps a kind of happiness.
His eyes suddenly turned blood-red as he charged forward.
“Brother…”
On the lamp above the hallway ahead Sister’s shadow appeared. She looked at Lu Xin with a grin.
She who hadn’t appeared all night finally showed herself.
“Move.”
But the Lu Xin of this moment let out a sound from deep in his throat charging straight past completely ignoring any intention to communicate with his sister.
Sister’s expression turned somewhat stunned staring blankly at Lu Xin.
…
…
After pondering how his father would act and feeling a sense of excitement Lu Xin felt everything around him change.
Especially when he leaped up reaching for the monster all his concentration focused instantly feeling himself like he was in water—that sense where any casual wave of his hand could create currents around him.
“Kill him kill him…”
Some of the heads on the monster were facing backward spotting Lu Xin and immediately opening their mouths to scream.
But before the monster could react Lu Xin had already grabbed hold of it.
It felt soft almost unreal but he was certain he could grasp the monster’s body.
A low growl escaped Lu Xin’s throat as he bent his arms pulling hard at the monster he held.
With a ripping sound *’Chila’* he tore off a piece of the monster’s body.
It was like real flesh he could even see blood-like liquid seeping from the wound.
“I can kill it…”
An excited expression appeared on Lu Xin’s face.
