Chapter 238: Descent of Chaos
by xennovel“Are we… Are we just going to watch these people go mad?”
Before the Information Analysis Department could provide their results, the chaos gripping the entire city had become nearly uncontrollable.
Around the Isolation Zone countless people felt their scalps tingle at the horrifying sight unfolding before them.
The crowd rushing madly towards the perimeter of the Isolation Zone seemed like completely different people now.
To ordinary people they wore expressions of madness or sinister intent, charging forward heedless of their own lives, unafraid of the armed soldiers’ firearms or the bullets felling their companions.
But in Lu Xin’s eyes these people were monsters.
He had already drawn his revolver, borrowing his sister’s ability to take down several monsters that had breached the perimeter.
Unfortunately compared to the sheer madness engulfing the entire Isolation Zone, his own power felt insignificant.
This wasn’t a lack of strength but a matter of numbers, like facing an ant swarm.
Dealing with those rushing towards the Donghai Grand Hotel from all over the city center felt even more overwhelming.
Once this kind of chaos began it felt unstoppable.
Though extremely anxious they could only endure for now.
Facing such a sudden large-scale special pollution incident, killing was never the best cleanup method.
Besides killing often introduced unnecessary complications.
Therefore until the fundamental logic chain of this pollution was found, all they could do was stabilize the situation.
The key to victory often lay more in prior preparation and the analysis of all available information.
…
…
In the sky the Red Moon grew larger as if drawing closer to the earth.
It wasn’t supposed to be a full moon tonight, yet the missing sliver seemed to be filling in.
The moon before people’s eyes was becoming fuller and fuller.
At this moment Qinggang truly seemed to have become a ghost domain, its atmosphere defined by chaos and panic.
Behind him in the direction of the Donghai Grand Hotel, the red-cloaked monster overlooking Qinggang Main City seemed to come alive.
It seemed to lift its head slightly, its indifferent gaze fixed upon Qinggang.
Also at this time countless panicked citizens of Qinggang looked up only to freeze completely.
They all clearly saw the red-cloaked mental monster.
For countless people this was the first time they had clearly seen the true form of a mental monster.
The visual impact instilled extreme panic in innumerable hearts making them want to kneel in its direction.
Such a colossal figure, an image delivering a profound psychological shock, brought one thing to mind:
The descent of a god!
…
…
Beside the Isolation Zone, Lu Xin who was helping the armed soldiers maintain the cordon occasionally firing twice to stop the Altered approaching, was also affected. He subconsciously turned towards the mental monster feeling rather annoyed.
Beside him the Doll had sidled up at some point, also looking up at the mental monster.
Lu Xin frowned and she frowned too.
An expression of displeasure Lu Xin himself hadn’t noticed appeared on his face, and she mirrored it.
The two of them quietly watched the mental monster.
They even tilted their heads slightly in unison.
It was hard to describe the feeling then—like an inexplicable lack of goodwill towards something they had no prior grievance against. Lu Xin clearly felt a dislike for it but was equally sure he couldn’t quite understand it yet. The mental fluctuations emanating from the red-cloaked mental monster filled him with disgust and impatience…
But its terrifying presence also put him on high alert.
These conflicting emotions warred within Lu Xin. Beside him the mad rush of the Altered in the Isolation Zone put immense pressure on the cordon while the distant red-cloaked mental monster seemed to be pushing their frenzy to even greater heights.
…
…
“All personnel, listen up.”
Just then Chen Jing’s calm yet forceful voice suddenly crackled through the channel.
Her voice held an unconcealed lightness.
“The Information Analysis Department has provided their action proposal. We are now officially commencing the cleanup operation.”
She sounded like she had received relevant orders, her voice holding no trace of hesitation as she commanded loudly, “Attention cordon personnel outside the Isolation Zone! All units fall back thirty meters, check protective helmets, activate vision disruption mode, and await further orders.”
“All members of the Special Action Team enter the channel and await orders. Prepare to begin the cleanup mission.”
“…”
*Swish!*
Upon hearing Chen Jing’s words Lu Xin immediately took the camera from his bag and attached it to his chest. Simultaneously after a burst of static on his open channel, a familiar voice announced, “Information Analysis Team connecting.”
“Mr. Lone Soldier, are you there?”
“…”
“I’m here.”
Hearing this voice Lu Xin felt an inexplicable sense of relief and snapped back to attention.
He quickly replied softly feeling somewhat complicated inside.
The Doll standing beside him seemed to notice the shift in Lu Xin’s mood and glanced at him.
Lu Xin subconsciously turned slightly away from the Doll covering his headset with his hand.
On the channel Han Bing’s voice paused for a moment then she chuckled, “Good evening Mr. Lone Soldier.”
“Good evening to you too…”
Lu Xin replied a bit stiffly unable to stop himself from adding, “About this meeting…”
“I know…”
Han Bing cut him off with a laugh her voice light. “Mr. Lone Soldier was assigned an important task at the last minute so we couldn’t meet. It’s quite a shame. But right now our main priority is resolving this mental pollution attack initiated by the Sea Country. Once this is over I hope I’ll have the chance to treat you to a meal Mr. Lone Soldier. After all we are in the Main City…”
“I should at least fulfill my duties as a host!”
“…”
Han Bing’s words instantly lightened Lu Xin’s mood.
He nodded and smiled. “Okay.”
Sensing Lu Xin’s improved mood the Doll beside him also showed a faint smile.
…
“Let’s save the reminiscing meeting colleagues and dinner invitations for later!”
Although Han Bing was online and about to take over providing information analysis support to Lu Xin Chen Jing hadn’t left the channel yet.
So naturally she had heard the conversation between Lu Xin and Han Bing.
After assigning a series of tasks her voice immediately sounded in the channel:
“Mr. Lone Soldier I need you to execute a mission now.”
Lu Xin immediately nodded composing himself. “Alright.”
He knew Qinggang was facing a terrifying special pollution attack and that cleaning up this pollution was his job.
Especially since the Altered in the adjacent Isolation Zone had become extremely violent by now.
The earlier gunfire had only slowed their advance to some extent.
The reason they hadn’t broken out of the Isolation Zone yet was because they were consuming each other slowing themselves down.
Even so they had already reached the edge of the Isolation Zone.
Regardless it was time to act.
Then he heard Chen Jing say over the channel, “Your mission is: Request the Doll to take action.”
