Chapter 290: Severed Connections
by xennovel“So… maybe next time I’ll let you loose. We need to build up our relationship first…”
Lu Xin apologized to his father while concentrating his attention.
The shadow stretching from beneath his feet suddenly underwent a drastic change. Initially vast, covering the entire Brain Monster, it now contracted rapidly, like a black cloth being gathered up. This concentration of power caused the intense mental impact from the crimson brain to surge outwards.
“*Crack! Pop! Pop…*”
That was the sound of walls and glass along the road shattering and collapsing under the mental impact.
The Brain Monster’s influence seemed to touch everything around it.
Even Lu Xin standing three or four meters away was hit by the sudden surge of power sliding back a meter or two.
But at that very moment Lu Xin’s shadow after contracting shot forward again.
This violent shift focused immense power into the shadow, like coiling up before striking hard. *Shhhhk!* The shadow surged towards the crimson brain tearing a gash through the distorted air—or force field—surrounding it, despite the mental impact covering the entire monster.
The tear ran deep even wounding the Brain Monster’s main body.
The brain writhed noticeably as if in pain and the electrical currents across its surface flashed more intensely.
This small wound seemed insignificant to it.
And it could repair itself almost instantly.
But Lu Xin having already consulted his family seized this small opening. He lunged forward grabbed the nearby skinned dog cowering with its tail between its legs and hurled it forward fast and accurately.
“*Awooo…*”
The skinned dog let out a pitiful cry before diving through the tear into the center of the Brain Monster’s force field.
The Brain Monster’s flesh writhed instinctively wrapping around and attempting to devour it.
Instantly half of the skinned dog’s body was consumed.
It shrieked in terror feeling its body being devoured then… an expression of pure bliss spread across its face.
Blood began seeping from its body mingling with the Brain Monster.
…
The violin music suddenly dissolved into chaos.
It sounded harsh and discordant like someone who knew nothing about music randomly sawing at the strings.
Simultaneously more and more madmen surged forward charging like wild beasts. They roared opening mouths filled with some unknown black liquid their pale pupils shrinking to pinpoints faces contorted with extreme madness and cruelty.
They lunged viciously at Lu Xin and Gao Ting their numbers threatening to overwhelm them completely.
But the instant the violin music changed these madmen also convulsed their limbs spasming as they twisted and collapsed to the ground.
The chaotic violin sounds persisted growing more frantic and jumbled losing all semblance of order.
The music radiated outwards from the Brain Monster like a wave spreading throughout the abandoned city.
“*Hoh hoh…*”
Countless madmen now shrieked wildly at the sky. Some desperately slammed their heads against walls again and again.
Others simply grabbed each other tearing and gnawing with feral intensity.
“Heavens… what… what’s happening…”
On a street near the abandoned city Old Zhou Little Zhou and the others clutching their guns about to charge froze bewildered by the chaos.
They had braced themselves to die fighting these crazed monsters never expecting them to suddenly turn on themselves.
To put it simply these madmen had gone mad.
Truly utterly mad…
“Could it be? Did Boss and Little Brother Lu succeed?”
Old Zhou suddenly cried out his voice trembling, “Then what do we do now…”
The madmen’s chaos made the surrounding scene even more frantic and terrifying.
But the pressure on them had lessened considerably.
The other old drivers instantly understood Old Zhou’s thought. They exchanged glances and nodded firmly.
“Let’s go! Get them back…”
“Not everyone! Anyone with less than three years’ experience keep heading out. Someone needs to spread the word about the madmen here…”
“Everyone else follow me! We’re rescuing the Boss… and that young man!”
…
“*Zzzzt…*”
Sparks flew everywhere as even stronger electrical currents surged into the Brain Monster. But the monster was already descending into indescribable chaos. Its surface remained intact even growing stronger with the energy input but its music was a jumbled mess. Simultaneously holes began appearing in the distorted force field around its body.
In some places the mental impact intensified while large blank spots appeared in others.
“*Phew…*”
Lu Xin let out a sigh. At this point the monster was no longer a real problem.
Cleaning up these things really just required finding the right method.
“*Snip…*”
Multiple figures of Mom appeared simultaneously opening their scissors.
With that crisp pleasant sound the blood vessels extending from the Brain Monster were all severed neatly. *Boom!* The Brain Monster crashed to the ground writhing like a giant mollusk.
“Waah! Die die die…”
Sister seized the opportunity leaping from Lu Xin’s shoulder and pouncing fiercely striking the monster with her small hands.
Where her hands landed patches of the monster’s blood-red surface immediately distorted. The currents flowing through its surface grooves short-circuited piece by piece. The crimson flesh turned gray and withered.
“You guys handle things here for a bit…”
A smile finally touched Mom’s lips as she gently instructed Lu Xin, “I’m going to check things out elsewhere.”
Lu Xin didn’t know where Mom was going but nodded anyway.
The shadow beneath his feet opened its blood-red eyes. After glancing at Mom it let out a hollow cold laugh. Then the shadow suddenly swelled surging towards the Brain Monster like a black tide. By now large areas were already distorted by Sister and its own mental impact was malfunctioning. The Brain Monster couldn’t resist the black shadow at all.
“*Splat…*”
The Brain Monster was instantly torn into several pieces. Foul blood sprayed seven or eight meters high like a fountain.
Amidst the rotting foul-smelling flesh lay the inappropriate skinned dog flat on its back its body twitching.
Its tongue lolled out of its mouth savoring the aftertaste.
…
“What… what just happened?”
At the same moment in the underground lab in White Tower Town all the personnel stared blankly at the screens.
They felt a chill run down their spines their minds utterly blank.
How could a simple enhancement experiment take such an unexpected turn?
On the surveillance footage the thin young man just stood there quietly watching as the “God’s Brain” No. 3 experimental subject disintegrated piece by piece finally collapsing into a pool of flesh and blood as if dealing with some trivial matter. But only they knew what kind of psychic magnitude and bizarre abilities that thin body must possess to achieve such a feat.
They clearly saw the young man seemingly standing still as the air around him distorted tearing through the “God’s Brain’s” distorted force field. Then as he simply watched the God’s Brain’s various indicators suddenly fell into abnormal disarray.
The God’s Brain was the core of the entire experiment.
Its disruption instantly caused all the low-level experimental subjects in the entire base to go mad their cognition thrown into chaos.
From the main control room they could even hear the low-level and incomplete Level 2 experimental subjects locked in the underground warehouses emitting agonized insane roars. They were devouring each other slamming their heads against the thick concrete walls.
…
…
“Who is he?”
“How could someone like that be in the convoy?”
A long time passed in the oppressive tense office before the sound of someone swallowing hard broke the silence.
“How… how do we write the report?”
…
His reminder suddenly jolted the white-bearded man who shouted abruptly, “Quick! Cut off all external connections…”
But just as his voice rang out the young man on the surveillance screen suddenly turned around.
He looked directly at the screen and offered a strange smile.
…
“*Click…*”
All surveillance feeds went dead.
The office fell eerily silent so quiet you could hear a pin drop.
“Should… should we evacuate?”
After a long pause a staff member finally spoke in a low voice.
The white-bearded man’s Adam’s apple bobbed. Before he could speak he suddenly shivered and looked outside.
Outside the office stretched a long corridor bathed in soft light.
But the lights had started flickering erratically sparks showering from the electrical connections. All surrounding noise had vanished leaving a silence so profound you could indeed hear a pin drop.
The soft indoor lighting flickered incessantly growing brighter then dimmer as if the lights themselves were trembling.
“*Click* *Click* *Click*”
A sound echoed from the corridor.
It was the crisp pleasant sound of high heels clicking on smooth tile.
But the internal surveillance screen which hadn’t been cut off yet showed the corridor completely empty.
“*Click… click…*”
The footsteps continued steadily drawing closer as if stepping on each person’s heart.
Finally the footsteps reached the doorway and stopped.
Everyone instinctively looked towards the door feeling as if someone was standing there watching them quietly.
But they saw no one.
In the oppressive atmosphere bordering on madness an expression of strange terror appeared on the white-bearded middle-aged man’s face. He suddenly lunged forward.
His hand shot up aiming to slam the red button marked “EXTREME DANGER”.
His face was ferocious filled with the resolve to destroy everything.
“*Snip…*”
Just as he slammed his hand onto the red button a crisp sound echoed in the air.
Like someone gently closing a pair of scissors.
Blood sprayed. The man’s wrist scraped across the console hitting the floor. Only then did he realize the feeling of pressing the button was an illusion. His hand separated from his wrist slapped onto the floor and twitched gently.
The cut was clean possessing a strange beauty.
“Ahhhhhh…”
Everyone in the research institute screamed in panic pushing and shoving trying to flee in all directions.
But amidst the chaos that crisp pleasant footstep sound echoed once more.
The footsteps echoed from various places as if an elegant composed person moved among the panicked crowd.
And so among the fleeing panicked people some suddenly collapsed looking down at their legs still standing on the ground. Others stared in horror across the room seeing their reflections in the glass revealing neat slits across their throats. Someone frantically reached for a gun only to find their fingers gone blood gushing from the stumps.
…
*Click click click*
The elegant captivating footsteps echoed through every corner of the lab.
Wherever they passed vibrant flowers bloomed within the lab.
Like an oil painting rendered in fresh blood.
