Chapter Index

    “What’s going on?”

The man ahead was skillfully escaping but kept an eye behind him. He was particularly startled when Lu Xin leaped from the ruined road into the construction pit below wondering if the guy would fall to his death. But unexpectedly Lu Xin’s clumsy figure suddenly became incredibly agile. His body tensed sprang into the air and reached out grabbing a protruding steel bar to launch himself forward.

The speed was terrifying closing the gap by two or three meters in an instant.

The man ahead was shocked and immediately quickened his pace like a phantom in the night rushing forward.

Two figures one chasing the other raced through the night.

Sometimes appearing under the lights sometimes vanishing into the darkness.

Whether it was power poles apartment buildings or abandoned high-rises their speed remained unaffected. Sometimes they ran on the ground other times they leaped onto the sides of buildings defying gravity as they dashed along.

The man was clearly getting serious his movements strangely potent.

With arms outstretched and legs slightly bent he propelled himself forward gaining a burst of speed.

But Lu Xin gritted his teeth and kept pace his form seeming even lighter than his target’s. Whether it was tangled wires in the air or narrow cramped gaps he slipped through effortlessly like a spider or perhaps a ghost flickering in and out of sight relentlessly pursuing his prey.

Even the light hitting his face seemed strange.

Under one patch of light his expression was serious and calm.

But rushing into the next patch of light his pupils turned pitch black and a playful smirk spread across his face.

Though both were incredibly fast Lu Xin was clearly quicker.

Earlier when his sister hadn’t arrived the man easily left him nearly a hundred meters behind. But now the distance was shrinking bit by bit three meters five meters ten meters… The figure ahead grew clearer in Lu Xin’s eyes.

However this area was already near the edge of High-wall City.

During their chase they quickly approached the towering High Wall at the city’s border.

Ahead there were no more buildings only a kilometer-wide open space covered in wild grass.

Further on the tall wall rose straight into the air seeming to block out half the night sky.

The figure didn’t hesitate plunging into the wasteland and heading straight for the High Wall.

Lu Xin now about sixty meters away raised his gun without compromising his agility or speed and fired several shots at the man.

No matter how accurately aimed the bullets lost some momentum after traveling fifty meters.

Especially since the man moved like a wildcat darting and weaving through the wasteland. The bullets missed kicking up clumps of grass.

Further away on the High Wall about four to five hundred meters to the left and over a thousand meters to the right spotlights flared to life sweeping towards their direction. The City Patrol Soldiers on the wall must have heard the gunshots and reacted immediately.

In the deep darkness the two beams of light were like incredibly bright swords.

Unfortunately even though the beams were tens of meters wide where they hit the ground the wasteland was simply too vast.

The figure quickly reached the base of the High Wall.

Wide thick and smooth enough for a troop to run along the polished concrete wall seemed as easy to climb as a ladder for this man. He scaled it effortlessly heading straight for the top.

It looked like he was about to escape over the High Wall to the outside.

    “Sister kill him!”

At this point Lu Xin could only grit his teeth and make a decision.

While quickly reloading he tossed the handgun into the air.

From his perspective his sister leaped into the air her small body still poised in a forward rush. Her tiny hands caught the freshly reloaded revolver. She aimed at the figure scrambling up the wall at astonishing speed almost too fast to make out clearly. A strange smile appeared on her small face hidden in the shadows.

    Then she fired repeatedly.

    Bang! Bang! Bang!

The revolver’s recoil nearly sent her weightless body flying backward.

But the three bullets flew forward with deadly accuracy.

One hit near the top of the man’s figure.

One hit near the bottom of his body.

But the third calculated his upward momentum perfectly aimed straight for his head.

In Lu Xin’s vision the bullet even seemed to slow down flying towards its target with a slow yet precise speed that felt almost magical. The man climbing the High Wall suddenly stopped instinctively turned around and beneath his dark sunglasses seemed to show a look of shock and surprise.

Then *smack* the bullet struck his neck.

Blood spurted neck tore open. His entire head flew off while his body hung limply on the High Wall.

Lu Xin watching this felt a little surprised himself.

He was using a revolver. Its bullets were less powerful but it was popular in High-wall City because it was relatively simple to make.

He hadn’t expected one shot to kill the man let alone sever his neck.

Perhaps his body was more fragile than an ordinary person’s?

As the thought crossed his mind Lu Xin didn’t hesitate catching his falling sister and quickly moving forward.

But just as he took two steps the headless corpse still hanging onto the wall by one arm suddenly twitched. Then using both hands and feet it scrambled rapidly up and over the High Wall in an instant.

Lu Xin’s heart sank. He rushed forward and climbed the High Wall himself.

He saw only the roar of a motorcycle in the wasteland outside the wall a headlight rapidly receding into the distance.

By the time he reached the top of the High Wall the motorcycle its throttle wide open had already sped seventy or eighty meters away.

The moonlight was bright tonight and Lu Xin’s vision had become exceptionally sharp.

He saw the figure on the motorcycle. Where the neck should be there was only a bloody stump completely empty.

This headless corpse riding a motorcycle quickly disappeared into the depths of the wasteland.

An extremely bizarre feeling suddenly surged in Lu Xin’s heart.

    “Who goes there?”

“Hands up immediately or we’ll shoot!”

From both sides of the High Wall came the sound of heavy rapid footsteps accompanied by high-intensity beams from hand-cranked flashlights.

    The white light was blinding.

Behind the glaring lights Lu Xin could sense many soldiers aiming their guns at him.

“My ID is in my pocket!”

Lu Xin raised his hands letting them see he wasn’t holding a weapon and spoke calmly.

He used his eyes to stop his sister. Perhaps because he seemed quite serious now she obediently crouched to one side.

Someone came forward quickly took the ID from Lu Xin’s upper left shirt pocket and handed it to the officer beside him.

Then they heard a brief flurry of commotion. A moment later all the guns were lowered simultaneously.

The blinding flashlight beams vanished only the spotlights continued to illuminate the area.

“Captain Xie Chen of the City Patrol Army’s Fourth Detachment!”

A man who looked like an officer approached Lu Xin saluted returned the ID and asked “What happened here?”

Lu Xin took back his ID put it away took a slight breath and said “I need to make a phone call!”
