Chapter 626: Chasing Shadows in a Chaotic City
by xennovelIn a city engulfed in chaos, Lu Xin and Dracula are being chased by the police.
Both of them move at incredible speed. Beneath the glow of the Red Moon, they leap and dart erratically along building faces.
Up in a helicopter, the sniper team was already on standby, but seeing how fast they were escaping, they didn’t have a shot.
The multi-barrel rotary gun fired relentlessly, but the risk of hitting innocent bystanders forced a temporary halt. Instead, they pushed forward while shouting over the walkie-talkie, calling for reinforcements.
However, thanks to the lightning reflexes of the two Spider-type Ability Users, the police cars on the ground couldn’t keep up.
Even the helicopter overhead was clearly struggling.
Amidst interwoven beams from the searchlights, Lu Xin and Dracula’s silhouettes intermittently appeared on rooftops, vertical walls, then vanished from view — moving with an eerie, blistering speed between towering buildings.
Meanwhile, on the ground, the special response team and police cars pursued them relentlessly, street after street.
The usually quiet city had suddenly become animated by their presence.
“Why are there more and more of our pursuers?”
Lu Xin dashed a few steps and caught up with Dracula along a vertical wall. Glancing back, he saw that the number of helicopters chasing them had doubled from two to four, with several more closing in from afar.
The ground forces remained hot on their heels like a relentless tide.
Lu Xin, nearly exasperated, wondered, “What the hell is going on?”
Just moments ago, the city was in utter disarray, so how could there be so many chasing us?
“Don’t worry, trust me…”
While dragging three large cases, Dracula panted as she tried to reassure Lu Xin, “They can’t catch us…”
“We’re Ability Users. How could they possibly keep up with our leaps and bounds?”
“…”
“But even Ability Users aren’t invincible…”
Lu Xin instinctively retorted, “But don’t they have their own Ability Users?”
“Bah!”
Disdainfully spitting from the window, Dracula shot back, “Their abilities have been deployed outside the city—who cares about us?”
“…”
“Swish” “Swish”
Before their words could finish, both Lu Xin and Dracula simultaneously went on high alert.
They abruptly veered off to both sides, catching sight of a flash of cold light pinned against the wall.
Turning around, they were stunned to see a black bullet.
After striking the wall, it immediately erupted into a dazzling blue electric arc.
The blast spanned three to four meters—many times more powerful than the special bullets Lu Xin had used before.
Even though both he and Dracula were adept at dodging, they still got caught in the shockwave of the blue arc.
For an instant, their bodies went numb, nearly causing them to fall from the vertical surface.
Glancing sharply downward, they noticed a dark figure far on the street, lining up a shot.
Although the shooter was clinging to a high-rise—forty to fifty meters above the ground and normally harmless—he was seen standing at the roadside, one-handed wielding a sniper rifle while squinting through the scope.
No doubt about it—such unorthodox and brazen tactics could only belong to a Spider-type Ability User.
Lu Xin, both angry and at a loss for words, shouted, “Didn’t you say that Flame currently doesn’t have any Ability Users to handle us?”
Dracula, equally exasperated, replied, “Flame is such a huge company—they must have some tricks up their sleeve.”
“Bang, bang, bang…”
As they talked, the Spider-type Ability User below began firing rapidly, unleashing bursts of blue electric arcs all around.
For someone armed with such lethal special bullets, it was nothing short of a nightmare.
Both Lu Xin and Dracula felt as if they were caught in a hail of bullets, scrambling in panic.
In anger, they glanced at the Spider-type below. The shooter, standing on a car roof with a shabby sniper rifle in hand, treated them—esteemed elite of the Red Moon Club—as if they were mere moles.
“Stay calm. Head for the window…”
But with no time to counterattack amid the overwhelming barrage, Dracula quickly made a suggestion.
Without missing a beat, she dashed into a window ahead.
Lu Xin, unsure of what else to do, grabbed his luggage and followed her through the window.
The moment he squeezed through, a brilliant blue flash erupted behind him as a bullet exploded.
“Crackle…”
Against a backdrop of dazzling blue arcs, Lu Xin and Dracula, dragging their suitcases, sprinted through a series of rooms.
In one room, a young couple was passionately embracing on a sofa while toasting with red wine.
Just as their intimacy deepened, they froze in shock as a girl laden with large bags dashed past their living room.
She sported gorgeous blonde hair and a cool eye patch over her left eye. Noticing a boy who was both kissing her and deftly unfastening her lingerie, she flashed him a remarkably meaningful smile.
No sooner had that occurred than another boy, dragging a suitcase, followed and shot the first a disdainful glance.
…
Elsewhere, a couple mid-scolding their child was startled when two shadows burst into the room. Watching a man and a woman dash through their home, one of them exclaimed,
“This is too much—who uses a spiked club to beat a kid?”
“…”
In another room, a man lay in the dark under a patchwork quilt, his face illuminated by the blue glow of a laptop screen as excitement played across it. His right hand had just slipped under the covers, and a smile crept across his face.
Suddenly, he spotted a girl outside the window carrying a suitcase who jumped into his room.
Dumbfounded, the man muttered, “Is this a dream come true?”
Before he could register a thought, he saw the girl dash by the bed and glance at the screen.
Her face flushed pink as she swatted the laptop away, cursing, “You shameless brat!”
The man was still in shock when another man leaped in and curiously peeked at the screen on the floor.
Then he chased after the girl, leaving behind a look of sympathy.
Only a man in his underwear, squatting on the ground and clutching a flickering laptop, eventually broke down in tears:
“Is this some kind of nightmare?”
…
In short, pandemonium reigned.
Countless residents of Flame City had their lives severely disrupted.
After darting through several rows of buildings, Lu Xin and Dracula began feeling dizzy, uncertain of where they were.
Meanwhile, the Spider-type Ability User on the ground, now separated by several buildings, couldn’t continue his mole-hunting. Clearly, he was smart enough not to follow any closer; otherwise, he’d be in serious trouble.
“Haha, safe for now?”
Dracula leaped out of a window, noticing that things had quieted down a bit, and as she ran, she turned and grinned at Lu Xin:
“I told you everything would be fine,”
“Flame doesn’t even have enough manpower—everyone’s overwhelmed…”
“…”
“Hmm…”
Just as Lu Xin was about to reply, he frowned slightly and muttered, “Watch out.”
As he spoke, his head jerked abruptly.
“Swish!”
A cold, sharp aura brushed against his scalp, sending a few strands of hair tumbling to the ground.
“Ah, yikes…”
Dracula, right beside him, leaped upward, narrowly escaping.
Yet, while her body dodged, the case in her hand inexplicably split in two. Its bottom half tumbled down as countless pieces of underwear, eye patches, contact lenses, wigs and more cascaded helplessly toward the dazzling lights below.
Heartbroken, Dracula cried out, “My precious…”
“Didn’t you say that Flame doesn’t have many Ability Users now?”
Lu Xin, too preoccupied to care for her cherished belongings, wearily looked ahead.
They had just shaken off the tailing and the mole-hunting Spider-type Ability User, and now more Ability Users appeared ahead.
On the rooftop of the building opposite, four or five figures in black robes were rapidly closing in.
Under the Red Moon, their silhouettes intermingled.
The foremost figure was even hovering in mid-air, swaying as it descended slightly before softly bouncing back.
With each bounce, its position shifted in an eerie manner.
Puppet-type.
Only Puppet-type Ability Users can traverse a bustling city using invisible filaments.
For medium-range movement, only Puppet-type can keep pace—even outpacing Spider-type.
And for long-range mobility, those who can slip through the abyss are the fastest.
But what drove Lu Xin crazy was seeing these fast-moving Ability Users racing toward him from the vibrant city night, with helicopters spinning overhead and ground forces accelerating in rows. He felt his entire worldview was about to be shattered.
Are you all just bored?
So many lunatics wreaking havoc in Flame City, yet you still choose to chase us?
…
“I can’t be blamed for this…”
While Lu Xin felt both frustrated and wronged, Dracula too was at her wit’s end.
With a pained glance at her irretrievably scattered underwear and eye patches, she looked up at the approaching Ability Users and argued, “I wasn’t wrong. These people aren’t from Flame—they’re from Black Box…”
“How did they get here so fast? How did they catch up to us?”
A trace of doubt flickered across her face before she spoke in a deeper tone, “But we needn’t panic…”
“…”
“Hold on…”
Lu Xin’s heart pounded furiously as he muttered, “Don’t tell me not to panic; your reassurance only makes me more panicked…”
