Chapter Index

    “So serious?”

The entire corridor was packed with people, all hurrying over and asking anxiously. Even Lu Xin couldn’t help but feel a bit nervous.

He hadn’t expected that this matter would suddenly stir such a huge reaction.

Professor Chen’s barrage of rapid-fire, professional questions left him at a loss for answers.

It felt just like having a teacher pick on you back in school.

But what scared him even more was this nanny team.

Seeing their imposing figures and aggressive glares, Lu Xin felt an inexplicable sense of unease.

There was no choice but to look to Mom for help.

After all, wasn’t it Mom you had to ask about this?

Lu Xin understood the concerns coming from Qinggang. Mom had granted Doll the innate power of the Cangzhang Sect. While that was good news in one respect, it was also incredibly sudden for Qinggang. Under normal procedures, one would first submit an application, have a group of researchers study it to ensure the risks were controlled, and then put protective measures in place.

Mom had quietly bestowed this level of power upon her—much like stealthily upgrading someone’s nuclear weapon.

So, to be honest, this matter really had little to do with him…

    “Hehe…”

Sensing Lu Xin’s nervousness, Mom slowly approached from behind and gently placed her hand on his shoulder.

Facing the onslaught of questions, she remained unfazed.

Her eyes swept over Professor Chen Liqing’s worried and urgent face, causing her brows to knit slightly.

Then, in a suddenly stern tone, she said, “You still need to ask about such a simple matter?”

    “Hmm?”

Professor Chen, who had been visibly frantic—almost on the verge of complaining—fell silent.

Lu Xin’s reaction seemed a bit off.

Before he could say anything, Mom continued, “Didn’t you pay attention during training?”

    “Uhm…”

    Professor Chen’s unease only deepened.

At that moment, Mom’s tone grew firm and her expression remained stern.

Professor Chen couldn’t tell if he was being addressed by a Single Soldier or by the mysterious ‘Ms. Lu’…

And, most crucially, it was the question she asked…

Getting old made it hard to digest all that material in such a short time…

He had even dozed off a little during class.

But he had collected all the class materials and studied them carefully…

Before Professor Chen could explain, Mom continued her lecture:

“You were given such precious knowledge to share and yet you weren’t serious. Is that what research is all about?”

    “…”

Professor Chen Liqing’s anxious look completely faded, replaced only by apprehension and guilt.

“All questions about her can be answered in the materials I provided to you.”

Clearly disinterested in further discussion, Mom added, “If you can’t understand, that’s your problem.”

“Now go back and study properly.”

“No more slacking off. When we meet again, I’ll test you.”

    “…”

Professor Chen nodded obediently and mumbled, “Alright.”

    “Hmph!”

Mom gave him a disdainful look before turning to the nanny team, whose tough appearance immediately gave them pause.

“What else are you up to?”

Mom didn’t even spare a kind look for the nanny team.

    “Well…”

Her hesitant tone made the team awkward, as if they had something to say but were too embarrassed to speak.

Then, a smile suddenly spread across Mom’s face as she said, “Take good care of her, or I won’t let you off the hook.”

    “Huh?”

The nanny team’s expressions shifted to one of bright surprise.

Although it sounded like a threat, hearing it made them happier than winning the lottery.

    “Where is she?”

Mom released her grip on Lu Xin’s shoulder, and he grinned as he said, “I’ll go check on her.”

    “She’s inside.”

The nanny team brightened up and cheerfully led Lu Xin toward the large ward inside.

Left alone in the corridor, Professor Chen Liqing stood dazed, unsure where to go, and Lu Xin paused briefly to give him a look.

Professor Chen instantly shivered and said, “I’ll go check the materials right away.”

In his anxious haste, he hurried off.

Lu Xin couldn’t help but feel both surprised and proud—this was the first time he’d seen that uneasy look on a Researcher.

    Mom was truly something else…

They arrived at the patient’s room and found Doll sitting cross-legged on the bed, dressed in black thermal underwear.

She seemed to have heard Lu Xin’s voice from the corridor and was waiting by the door for him.

Beside her, streams of mental power were gradually materializing into white chains, gently swaying around the room.

Some of the chains were even fetching the remote control from the distant television.

Others were rolling an apple from the table onto a nearby set of covers.

One chain had even reached over her back, playfully scratching an itch.

It almost looked like a pretty spider perched on the bed.

“So the domination chains work like this too?”

Even though Lu Xin had only seen it yesterday, her peculiar behavior still amused him.

The nanny team, trailing nervously behind, hurriedly explained in hushed tones, “This is a coordination plan developed after Professor Chen and a few researchers discussed it. They advised Doll to use this ability more often. If she feels any discomfort, she should stop immediately, so that we can quickly record the pressure this power exerts. That way, any potential risks can be identified sooner…”

“But judging by her current performance, Doll doesn’t seem uncomfortable at all…”

    “…”

“Getting her familiar with it might even be beneficial…”

Mom said with a playful smile, then added in a different tone, “But if she gets too used to it, she’ll only become lazier, right?”

    “Lazy?”

Lu Xin and the anxious nanny team all froze for a moment before suddenly realizing the implication.

After all, Doll barely ever left her room aside from her usual activities.

Of course, she had been making more trips to Second Satellite City lately.

Now, with these chains at her disposal, it seemed she could grab anything she wanted in the room without even moving.

…I hope she doesn’t end up like the little female officer from Second Satellite City and turn into a lump of meat.

    “Not bad…”

Mom approached Doll, pinched her cheek, and gently patted her head. She then rolled her eyes playfully before turning her attention back to Lu Xin, saying, “The inherent power of domination in a person is definitely a level above most ability users. When an ordinary user bears such power, their mind is bound to show signs of collapse.”

“It’s similar to the unbearable pressure you once lived under.”

    “…”

She smiled again as she glanced back at Doll and nodded with approval, adding, “But this little girl is really something. Her so-called ‘princess-type’ ability falls under the domination category. Besides, even though she can be a bit dim-witted, her heart is completely pure—free from the clutter of ordinary thoughts. That actually enables her to better withstand higher levels of power.”

“Before, she could borrow others’ mental power precisely because of her high tolerance.”

    “…”

Listening to this, Lu Xin could only nod in agreement.

He recalled how, during the confrontation with the Queen of Happy Town by the Technology Church, he’d witnessed Doll reach her mental power limit.

At that time, it was a terrifying magnitude. If applied to an ordinary ability user, even a third of that capacity would be unachievable—and that was before she had fully mastered her own power.

Later, she learned to control her mental power, greatly enhancing her endurance.

    “Just stay pure…”

Mom sighed softly and then smiled at Doll, saying, “Take good care of her and be good.”

As she said this, she planted a tender kiss on Doll’s forehead.

Doll blinked in surprise before turning to Mom with a sweet, happy smile.

Lu Xin stood aside, watching their exchange and feeling deeply moved.

    “Sss…”

But this scene, witnessed by the nanny team at the door and by Han Bing among others, made their eyes widen in shock.

Aside from the fact that Lu Xin had deliberately mentioned that ‘Ms. Lu’ would come to lecture—and showed a clear change in his demeanor—they wouldn’t have noticed his condition otherwise. From their perspective, all they saw was Lu Xin scolding Professor Chen, carefully checking Doll, and muttering that there was nothing wrong; that Doll was perfectly fine…

The most shocking part was that after the check, Lu Xin actually kissed Doll!

    He kissed Doll!

    Were they already that close?

He had missed some of the events last night—what exactly happened?

The nanny team was simultaneously astonished, confused, and anxious, while Han Bing’s eyes widened further as he silently lowered his head.

    “Are we leaving now?”

“Or should we sit a while longer?”

As they were about to leave, the nanny team leader personally carried a tea tray. Others brought along snacks and even some candy.

They warmly invited, “It’s almost lunchtime. Why not have lunch before getting back to work?”

Lu Xin murmured to himself, wondering, “How did their attitude change so drastically?” He remembered that earlier upstairs he had been rather cold.

However, picking up on Han Bing’s subtle glance, Lu Xin knew just how impatient the Special Cleaning Department outside the city was, so he declined their offer to linger for lunch, instead pocketing a handful of candy—after all, these were high-end treats…

…They could be taken home for Sister.

“See how well they treat you?”

As they left the hospital and prepared to board the helicopter to the base outside the city for the Special Cleaning Department, Mom seemed in exceptionally high spirits.

With a cheerful smile, she turned to Lu Xin and said, “Of course, giving away something this precious all at once naturally makes the other side a bit concerned. They’ll always wonder if there’s a special ulterior motive. But what do you think?”

Her smile grew triumphant as she asked, “What does this signify?”

    “Um…”

Surprised by Mom’s question, Lu Xin hesitated before tentatively asking, “So, the three million doesn’t need to be repaid?”

    “Sigh…”

Mom let out a soft, resigned sigh.
