Chapter 77: An Unwanted Complication
by xennovel“This…”
Seeing Lu Xin’s demeanor, both Mr. Xu and Fat Manager Liu felt a strange sense of unease.
They had handled similar private commissions countless times. Some involved searching for items in the old cities others required dealing with shady matters discreetly. But every time their main worry was finding irresponsible freelancers who’d merely go through the motions. Who could have expected they’d run into someone whose sense of responsibility was almost excessive…
They’d already said the job was finished and offered payment yet he refused to let it go?
Mr. Xu’s expression turned awkward his brow furrowing tightly. He remained silent for a long moment.
Fat Manager Liu however instantly noticed Mr. Xu seemed to have ulterior motives simply wanting no further interference. He quickly smoothed things over with a smile, “Mr. Lone Soldier you’re truly a responsible person. But since the client has already stated…”
Lu Xin frowned slightly asking, “Is that written in the contract?”
Fat Manager Liu choked.
This was originally a rescue contract how could it possibly mention this?
Besides he never anticipated a situation like this…
…Though perhaps it should be added to future contracts.
Mr. Xu’s frown deepened. Something seemed to cross his mind and his expression turned colder his voice gaining some force, “Mr. Lone Soldier my daughter is fine now. The commission for you is concluded. To express my gratitude for saving her life I’m willing to double the payment. But I hope this matter ends here. You may leave…”
“Double?”
Fat Manager Liu nodded looking towards Lu Xin as if thinking this was quite generous.
But Lu Xin still shook his head saying, “I’m not doing this for your payment. I just won’t accept payment without finishing the job properly.”
The atmosphere immediately grew heavy.
Mr. Xu suddenly seemed to exude a greater sense of authority watching Lu Xin silently as if trying to see through his true intentions.
“Dad what are you still talking about?”
Just then a voice inquired from the villa’s living room. Xu Xiao Xiao now wearing a thick down jacket over her robe had come to the doorway. Looking impatient she urged, “Hurry up and send them away. We need to leave immediately for… otherwise we won’t be able to enter the Main City tonight…”
Though anxious she instinctively omitted part of her sentence as if afraid Lu Xin and the others might overhear.
Sister was hanging upside down from the doorframe beside her giggling and spinning:
“They’re rushing to get something from a place called Bengbu Port. They’re eager to get rid of you now…”
Lu Xin listened to his sister’s words without changing expression though his gaze seemed to deepen slightly.
Mr. Xu unaware that Lu Xin already knew everything frowned and said rather coldly, “Xiao Xiao wait a moment. Go make the phone arrangements. It seems this Mr. Lone Soldier isn’t satisfied with the payment we offered.”
Hearing this Lu Xin couldn’t help but frown. Wasn’t this falsely accusing him?
He looked up at Mr. Xu saying, “I just hope to resolve the matter of the pollution source…”
He wanted to say such things were too dangerous and if something went wrong it wouldn’t just be the father and daughter who suffered.
But he felt they couldn’t possibly be unaware of this.
“There is no pollution source.”
Mr. Xu frowned cutting him off, “Mr. Lone Soldier this is merely your baseless speculation…”
Lu Xin frowned considering how to phrase his words. Just then the woman in the thick down jacket strode out the door her brow furrowed, “I heard Dad talk about you. You saved my life. To thank you and to ensure you don’t go spreading rumors I can give you 300,000. Let’s end this here. Don’t be too greedy…”
“300,000…”
Lu Xin paused slightly, “Is money this easy for these people to make?”
Then he shook his head saying, “300,000 is very good but…”
Before he could finish his explanation the girl’s expression suddenly changed. From beneath her down jacket she pulled out a handgun pointing it coldly at Lu Xin, “Don’t think just because we’re from the Main City we don’t understand your kind’s extortion tricks. Do you know even if I shot you dead right now the Administration Hall wouldn’t find me guilty after I return to the Main City?”
“This…”
Fat Manager Liu seeing her suddenly draw a gun hastily stepped back.
Even Mr. Xu frowned slightly seeming to want to say something but ultimately held his tongue merely watching Lu Xin.
In the distance the medical personnel saw this unfold with mild surprise but seemed unsurprised by such occurrences.
Lu Xin stood motionless his brow slightly furrowed.
His gaze met Xu Xiao Xiao’s which was sharp and cold.
Lu Xin noticed her eyes were slightly bloodshot possessing a subtle excitement and coldness. He could confirm the Mental Monster on her had been cleared and she was conscious but there was an intense impulsive feeling about her.
“Although the Mental Monster was cleared is she still under some kind of influence?”
“Or perhaps…”
“…”
“I don’t have time to waste with you!”
As Lu Xin pondered the girl had already flicked off the gun’s safety.
Her voice was cold her brow tightly knit, “I’ll give you two choices now. Take the money and get lost immediately or…”
Even without her finishing Lu Xin understood the implication.
Fat Manager Liu couldn’t help but interject, “Mr. Lone Soldier it doesn’t have to come to this…”
Mr. Xu also tapped his cane lightly saying slowly, “Mr. Lone Soldier we didn’t have to make things so tense.”
Hearing them Lu Xin paused for a moment before slowly nodding, “Indeed it wasn’t necessary.”
Xu Xiao Xiao standing on the steps revealed a cold smirk upon hearing this.
Just then she saw Lu Xin look up at her his expression seemingly tinged with worry.
This momentarily stunned her.
Then she suddenly felt a faint cold breeze. The gun in her hand abruptly moved on its own. Though it was a complete handgun its chamber barrel spring receiver magazine and even the bullets seemed to gain lives of their own flying apart inexplicably piece by piece meticulously disassembling into a pile of parts that clattered to the ground.
This bizarre scene made her scream and quickly retreat.
But almost immediately her shout turned into a shriek.
Because after the gun in her hand automatically fell apart scattered on the ground next were her fingers.
One by one.
They landed bloodily mingling with the gun parts.
