Chapter 1025: The Wolf King’s Decision
by xennovelThe Handsome Huge Wolf didn’t look back, but he froze on all fours, tail rigid, clearly wrestling with an intense internal struggle.
Seeing him waver, Xia Qing immediately sweetened the deal. “Big Wolf, come on, try this—it’s the spinach I just grew, loaded with extra energy! Drink this nutrient shake and you’ll be even stronger—you can knock Broken Back right out of that tree and pin him to the ground!”
Sure enough, the Handsome Huge Wolf was tempted. With his frosty expression, he shuffled back—never even glancing at Xia Qing—and gulped down the water in big mouthfuls.
Once he finished, Xia Qing eagerly poured in a pack of freeze-dried Green Lantern Wild Boar meat, cracked a fresh egg, and said, “Big Wolf, give this a try—freeze-dried Green Lantern pork mixed with a Green Lantern egg. Every wolf king loves this kind of Green Lantern food.”
When the Handsome Huge Wolf had licked the bowl clean and was about to leave, Xia Qing called after him. “Big Wolf, my friends said they found the scent of two strangers over there—those humans who killed my companions and ran here. They’re bad people. Your nose is amazing—you must’ve caught their trail. Can you tell me where they are?”
If it got too complicated, he might not understand, so Xia Qing simplified. “Big Wolf, can you tell me where the two humans who broke in are hiding?”
The Handsome Huge Wolf stayed expressionless, his icy blue eyes wild and fierce, just like any other Evolved Wolf. But Xia Qing knew he understood some human speech, so she pleaded, “Big Wolf, tell me where they’re hiding, okay? If I can’t find them, I won’t even have the heart to grow spinach, raise chickens, or feed wild boars.”
“If I don’t work, no tasty food for you, Big Wolf. And I won’t be able to trade you more of those Medicinal Baths to make you stronger.” Xia Qing kept persuading. “In a few days we’ll do another Medicinal Bath—if you want to get stronger, Big Wolf, you’ll tell me where they are, right?”
The Handsome Huge Wolf ignored Xia Qing and turned to leave. Xia Qing quickly picked up the bowl and followed. “Big Wolf, if the bad humans are over there, that’s great! I’ll go with you to catch them!”
“Big Wolf…”
She trailed him for a while, muttering, before the Handsome Huge Wolf finally stopped, hesitated for a few seconds, then changed direction and headed southwest toward the Evolved Forest.
Yes! It worked!
Xia Qing followed, her steps light. For all his poker face, the Handsome Huge Wolf had a soft spot and wasn’t patient—clearly fed up with her nagging, he finally caved and decided to take her along.
Just as Xia Qing was celebrating, the Handsome Huge Wolf suddenly broke into a run. Having chugged a nutrient shake, Xia Qing could barely keep up for half an hour before the distance widened—but before she could call out, the wolf slowed down. Gritting her teeth, Xia Qing half walked, half crawled to keep pace.
A stabbing pain shot through Xia Qing’s forehead. She immediately glanced at the Air Toxin Detector on her arm. The air was clean here, but the magnetic field was dangerously intense—there must be some lethal Devastation Evolution plants up ahead. Xia Qing opened her mouth to shout a warning when the Handsome Huge Wolf abruptly halted, staring straight ahead.
Here it is—they’d arrived!
Battling her headache, Xia Qing raised her sniper rifle and crept close to the Handsome Huge Wolf, nerves on high alert.
Thirty meters away, nestled in a tree hollow tangled with vines, were two humans—faces oddly blue behind protective masks, eyes shut tight. Instantly, Xia Qing leveled the sniper rifle at one of their heads, shielding the Handsome Huge Wolf with her body as she swiftly pulled back.
After eleven years of disasters, Xia Qing had seen her share of poisoned and unnatural skin. Strange skin color didn’t always mean death; even a lack of breath didn’t guarantee a real corpse. As long as a ‘body’ still had its head and neck attached, there was a good chance it was someone just faking to lure in targets for a surprise attack.
The stabbing pain in her forehead made Xia Qing even colder. She knew her limits—her strength was sniping, not close combat. If she kept her distance, she was guaranteed to win two against one.
Close combat, though, was the Handsome Huge Wolf’s specialty.
But those two masked as corpses were far from normal—and neither was that tree, or the entire patch of plants, for that matter. Who knew what kind of poison they’d brought, or how that big tree could strike? No way was Xia Qing letting her walking treasure—the wolf—risk it.
The Handsome Huge Wolf must’ve picked up on Xia Qing’s warning. His icy blue eyes blazed with murder, lips curling back to bare those deadly fangs. He growled, deep and threatening, “Grrrr—”
Not good! As he let out that growl, Xia Qing immediately shoved herself between him and the threat, retreating while squeezing the trigger.
“Bang!”
“Bang!”
“Bang!”
The three gunshots rang out together. The second Xia Qing fired, she felt bullets strike her abdomen and thigh at the same time. If she hadn’t been wearing a layer of snake skin armor under her special protective suit, and if her attackers hadn’t used homemade pistols with weak penetration, she’d be dead by now.
With her wolf companion behind her, Xia Qing didn’t dare dodge. She shoved the Handsome Huge Wolf behind a rock for cover—sure enough, two more rounds pelted the stone right after.
Gritting her teeth, Xia Qing pulled a grenade and hurled it forward.
“Boom!”
After tossing the grenade, Xia Qing quickly checked the Handsome Huge Wolf. Seeing that he was unharmed, she heaved a sigh of relief, scrambled onto his back, and shouted, “Big Wolf, that way—go!”
With Xia Qing aboard, the Handsome Huge Wolf dashed out in a flash, reaching the hillside Xia Qing had pointed to, three hundred meters away. As a sniper, Xia Qing’s first instinct, no matter where she was, was to find the best vantage point. Around here, that was the hill.
“Awooo—”
“Awoo—wooo—”
The Western Wolf Pack was roused, their warning howls rolling across the land.
As Xia Qing leapt off the wolf’s back, she hooked an arm around his neck to pull him behind a massive boulder with her. Heightening her senses, she locked onto her target in seconds and squeezed the trigger without hesitation.
“Bang!”
Eight hundred meters away, a figure bounding through the Evolved Forest took a shot to the neck and dropped like a stone.
Xia Qing wasted no time, grabbing the Handsome Huge Wolf and shifting position. Before she could spot her new target, she heard him roar. Instantly, she swung her rifle in his direction.
“Bang!”
She missed her shot at the target, now at sixteen hundred meters, but got a clear look at their moves and gear—a high-level Speed Evolver, and not a sniper.
Xia Qing may not be a high-level speed-evolved sniper—but the four-legged, human-language-savvy, brain-evolved giant wolf next to her sure closed the gap. She quickly fashioned her restraint harness into a leash, looped it around the wolf’s front legs, then swung onto his back. “Big Wolf, call the pack back. Let’s chase him down and finish it!”
“Awoo—wooo—”
The Handsome Huge Wolf raised his head and howled, silencing the pack and charging ahead with Xia Qing in hot pursuit.
With her legs lashed tightly to the running wolf, and hands bracing her sniper rifle, Xia Qing locked eyes on her quarry. Not even the thrashing trees, nor the branches whipping her as they raced past, could break her focus for a second.
