Chapter 1119: The Wolves, Bears, and Serpent Clash: Xia Qing Heads for Hill Sixty
by xennovelThe wolves, bears, and serpent are at war. Xia Qing races toward Hill Sixty, but why isn’t Er with her?
That’s because the moment Er heard the wolves’ howls, he vaulted over the wall and charged for the battlefield so fast Xia Qing could only thank her stars she’d suited him up in a protective suit to deal with the Devastation Snake crisis.
With the emergency disaster response underway, Hu Zifeng’s Squad had to guard Section Three and Section Three of Hill Forty-Nine. They couldn’t spare anyone for outside missions, so Xia Qing recruited Advanced Dual-System Evolver Huo Zhun and Three-Element Evolver Zhang Hongda for her team this time.
She called in Zhang Hongda because he’s trustworthy, strong, and since Territory Fifteen has the numbers, they could pull people for other tasks if needed.
Territory Eleven might only have six people, but after Xia Qing called out Huo Zhun, they felt no pressure at all. Besides Wang Dashan, the other four were all Evolvers—and three of them were ex-marine commandos with combat prowess off the charts.
Forget the Devastation Snake—even that seventeen-meter black loach from the python territory, suspected to have undergone Brain Evolution, would turn tail and burrow into the ground like a worm at the sight of these three.
Zhang Hongda, on his first mission like this, sat in the copilot seat, back to a man, a wolf, and a monkey, gripping a machine gun as he snuck a glance at the submachine gun strapped to Huo Zhun’s waist as he piloted the helicopter—trying his best to look unfazed.
Just two nights back, Huo Zhun and his two closest buddies had driven Tang Huai’s luxury car to pull off a nighttime heist, scoring a stash of weapons and supplies. That gun likely came from their haul.
Not bad… not bad at all…
Twenty minutes later, Crippled Wolf stared out the window, then raised a huge paw to tap Xia Qing as she sorted supplies with her head down.
Xia Qing glanced outside and gave the order. “Huo, set us down at the usual spot on Hill Fifty-Nine.”
“Copy that.” Huo Zhun lowered the helicopter and landed smoothly on a flat-topped peak in the northern part of Hill Fifty-Nine, close to Hill Sixty.
“Huo, Dazhi, you and Zhang stay with the helicopter. Don’t get off. If anything happens, take off immediately. Don’t tangle with the animals here.” After giving the instructions, Xia Qing slung on her backpack, hopped out, and unclipped Monkey from around her neck, pointing him toward Hill Sixty-One.
“Monkey, go check on the bear pack and come back here to wait for me. We’ll return to Section Three together.”
Monkey, with his bulging little backpack, stared vacantly at Xia Qing for a few seconds before scaling a tree with quick, nimble moves, vanishing into the dense northwest forest before anyone could blink.
Once certain Monkey was heading for Hill Sixty-One, Xia Qing and Crippled Wolf turned north and quickly disappeared as well.
Zhang Hongda, who’d never seen anything like this, felt like his brain had been stuffed with a whole encyclopedia of questions. But by the rules of a team sortie, he had to keep his mouth shut.
It was dead quiet. Above the evolved forest, not even a single bird flew by. The silence before the storm was downright eerie.
“Big Wolf, you’re hurt?!”
Following Crippled Wolf over two ridges to the second peak of Hill Sixty, deep in the Wolf Pack’s core territory near a cave, Xia Qing caught sight of Handsome Huge Wolf standing at the entrance, blood trickling from his belly. Her heart clenched.
As Xia Qing rushed toward Handsome Huge Wolf, Crippled Wolf howled a few times toward the cave and bounded into the dense forest in seconds.
Xia Qing peeked into the cave and found five wounded wolves inside. The Alpha, Er, and Lame Wolf weren’t among them, which was a relief. She pulled out an injector, planning to locally anesthetize Handsome Huge Wolf’s side wound.
His flank had three slashes nearly twenty centimeters long, deep enough to expose rib bone—clawed by an evolved bear’s wickedly sharp front paw. Thankfully, his organs were untouched.
The anesthetic Xia Qing brought was a long-lasting local one she’d traded for with Idol. It kicked in within thirty seconds—far faster than anything oral, and naturally cost more, but that was the last thing on her mind. She just wanted to numb Big Wolf’s pain and treat him fast.
Face smeared with blood, Handsome Huge Wolf sidestepped the injector, eyes glinting ice blue, locked on the pocket of Xia Qing’s protective suit with murderous intent.
Xia Qing got it—this number three fighter from the Northern Wolf Pack didn’t want anesthesia. He was here for a nutrient shake to recover, then get straight back into the fight.
“Handsome Wolf, just give me fifteen minutes.” Xia Qing didn’t hand over the nutrient shake—if she did, he’d bolt instantly. She pinned him down and gave the injection, quickly tending to his injuries.
She stopped the bleeding, shaved fur, cleaned, disinfected, debrided, stitched him up, and covered the wound with the best breathable and tough medical tape she had…
Once she was done, Xia Qing dug out a nutrient shake, freshly mixed from spinach juice and pure spring water, and held it out to Handsome Huge Wolf. “Here, Big Wolf, drink this.”
Already impatient, Handsome Huge Wolf gulped down the shake, then nudged the nose of Xia Qing’s protective mask with his big wet nose before dashing off to the battlefield.
For the first time, this proud, often-pretending-to-be-dumb giant wolf used his actions to show her genuine friendliness.
Xia Qing took out a disinfecting wipe and cleaned up the mess on her face shield, then headed into the cave to give first aid to the remaining wolves.
Every last one of these wolves, without exception, got an oral anesthetic from Xia Qing. None were close companions—and if she tried treating their wounds with only local anesthesia, they could panic and snap at her.
Two of the injured wolves refused to take the medicine, so Xia Qing let out a few growls and pinned their heads down until they swallowed it.
Oral anesthetics are a lot cheaper than injections, so Xia Qing used those whenever she could.
The two wolves guarding the wounded only bared their fangs and let out a low growl as Xia Qing pinned their buddies’ heads down. Who knew if they were snarling at her or the wounded?
Out of these five, two had injuries just like Handsome Huge Wolf—bear claw wounds. The other three bore torn skin, muscle damage, and internal injuries from fighting the python.
Surface wounds, Xia Qing could handle. For damaged organs, she’d need an x-ray to confirm and treat, so for now, she just gave them anti-inflammatory painkillers and planned to discuss further care with Crippled Wolf once the battle ended.
After treating the wolves, Xia Qing packed up and fed the two guarding wolves some fresh spinach nutrient shake before leaving the cave for the battlefield.
Her most important wolf companions were already out there in the thick of it, so she had to go too. After all, the Black Loach from Python Territory and the bear pack from Hill Sixty-One had already seen her working with the wolves—she didn’t have anything to hide.
Making her way northwest, Xia Qing ran into two more groups of wolves.
The first group, at the foot of the second peak, weren’t all that strong—likely there as sentries, not fighters. The second was stationed by a creek at the northern edge of Hill Sixty, close to Python Territory. These wolves lined up in a defensive line to block the python’s advance.
Behind the wolves trailed seven honey badgers—all with stuffed bellies—and right in the mix was Flathead, munching away.
