Chapter 340: Wolves, Wounds, and Remedies
by xennovelThere’s only a small amount of Synthetic Toxin in its blood. If we can put together two kinds of matching antidotes, the poison can be cured.
After testing the Alpha’s blood and comparing it to Luo’s case, Doctor Wang of Azure Dragon Squad couldn’t help but think this wolf was really lucky.
Captain Yang is on his way with the key antidote herb. He spent over a month, traveling thousands of miles just to find it for Luo. If Luo had gotten this medicine within 24 hours of being poisoned, he could have avoided months of suffering.
After checking the wounds on Alpha’s leg, Chang Li turned to Doctor Wang and asked, “Is the antidote for oral use or applied on the wound? Can we stitch up this wolf’s leg yet?”
“Oral. Go ahead and stitch it.” Doctor Wang glanced at the Alpha, lying quietly and sedated on the wooden boards, and sighed. “These evolution wolves are too clever. They might not know how to neutralize poison, but they get that bleeding can draw out toxins. Miss Xia, can I take a look at that Devastation Snake?”
“Of course. You can just call me Xia Qing.” Xia Qing hurried upstairs, fetched the Devastation Snake from the fridge, and handed it to Doctor Wang. “This is the only one we’ve got. Judging by the wolves’ behavior, this is probably what bit Alpha.”
Hu Zifeng and Chang Li, who had never seen a Devastation Snake before, came over too. They peered closely at the snake, watching every detail.
Chang Li corrected Xia Qing. “Devastation Snakes are extremely rare, plus there’s barely any Synthetic Toxin in Alpha. So this is definitely the snake that bit it.”
Hu Zifeng added his own guess. “After Alpha collapsed, the rest probably didn’t know which wound was the snake bite, so they just tore open all the injuries on its leg.”
“That’s possible.” Doctor Wang told Chang Li to start stitching up Alpha’s leg, then headed back to Territory One to prepare the antidote based on Alpha’s poisoning. As soon as the team captain brought the rarest ingredient, they’d finish the antidote for Alpha.
The sooner you give medicine after poisoning, the less damage the body will take.
Jing Kuan escorted Doctor Wang back while Hu Zifeng stayed to guard Chang Li. It had to be this way. Doctor Wang was vital for the whole squad, and with all those wolves and sheep in Xia Qing’s territory, if anything happened to Chang Li, it would be a big loss for Azure Dragon Squad.
Xia Qing stayed in the house, quietly stroking Alpha’s neck to calm it down, watching Chang Li suture the wound. Knowing Xia Qing wanted to learn, Chang Li explained as she worked.
Teacher and student, both completely focused. Hu Zifeng looked at Alpha, then at Xia Qing. He was dying to ask a hundred questions but had to keep them bottled up.
Last night, Hu Zifeng had seen a huge wolf carry Xia Qing away from Section Three. Then, this morning, he caught her on the cameras again, tumbling back from the north with an entire pack of wolves carrying supplies for her.
Besides a few bags, she even brought back three wounded wolves. She must’ve gone to Hill Sixty.
After the fight on Hill Sixty last night, who won—bears or wolves? Did Xia Qing gain some kind of beast speech ability? How else does she communicate with the wolves?
If she really has a way to talk to beasts, she’d be pretty much unstoppable!
Sensing the human nearby getting more and more worked up, Alpha, still and silent, flicked its one good eye toward him.
Hu Zifeng stepped back, worried he’d pick up wolf scent and Little Five wouldn’t let him get close when he got home.
“Buzz—”
Xia Qing felt her phone vibrating, glanced down, then stood up. “Captain Hu, Li Jie, Captain Yang’s here. I’ll go meet him.”
Hu Zifeng got to his feet. “Want me to go instead?”
No way. Xia Qing still had to take Yang Jin to the Spring Cave to dig up some Devastationweed. “Captain Hu, you stay here and protect Li Jie. I’ve got things to discuss with Captain Yang. Old Goat, Er, you two stay too—don’t let the wolf in the sheep shed stir up trouble.”
Xia Qing switched off the territory’s security cameras, hurried to the Northern Barrier, and led Yang Jin into the Lower Slope Greenhouse. “These are the two plants. They’ve barely changed since planting, so Captain Yang, which one should we dig up?”
“No need to dig up the whole thing. The doctor said just two leaves will do.” Yang Jin pulled out a sharp, narrow-bladed knife, sliced off two Devastationweed leaves, and tucked them into a prepared case. He turned to Xia Qing. “Based on your experience, should we treat the cut?”
Since the Spring Cave was so tiny, this was the closest Yang Jin and Xia Qing had ever been.
Xia Qing studied the two clear drops of sap on the fresh stem for a moment, then shook her head. “No need. The sap covers the cut. Anyway, I wouldn’t know what kind of disinfectant is right for this plant.”
She turned and realized just how close she stood to Yang Jin. That face packed a punch from afar, but up close, it was even more dizzying.
The three healing scars on Yang Jin’s face had all scabbed over, but his cheeks and ears were bright red. Xia Qing didn’t think she was special enough to make Captain Yang, who’d rejected every woman at Base, suddenly flustered by her.
Captain Yang’s flushed face—he must just be worn out from hurrying over.
After sprinting forty miles with a heavy load herself, Xia Qing knew better than anyone what that’s like. “Thanks for making the trip, Captain Yang. Want some water?”
Yang Jin cleared his dry, raspy throat and replied, “Please.”
Surprisingly, Xia Qing led him to a small hut by the fields. The place was empty—she figured the wolves were inside her house getting medical care.
Xia Qing poured a glass of spring water and handed it over. “Li Jie’s at my house stitching up Alpha right now, so it’s not convenient to serve you there.”
Yang Jin took it and downed it in one go.
Doctor Wang, now notified, rushed over with the finished antidote. He added the Devastationweed sap, handed the medicine to Xia Qing, and explained, “Both are oral doses. Give Alpha one after the sedation wears off, then another after 12 hours. Tomorrow we’ll run another blood test to see if more medicine is needed.”
After making sure she understood how to store the medicine, Xia Qing turned to Yang Jin.
Yang Jin read the situation perfectly. “You should go treat the wolf first. I have other things to handle—let’s talk price later.”
The antidote wasn’t just Devastationweed. It included several rare herbs that Azure Dragon Squad scraped together—no surprise it’s so expensive.
Once she saw Yang Jin and Doctor Wang off, Xia Qing rushed back home, put the medicine in the fridge, then stayed at the table—her makeshift operating table—to keep watching the suturing process.
When they finished, Xia Qing looked worried. “Li Jie, will the fur on Alpha’s leg grow back?”
“Some of it will,” Chang Li said, taking off her gloves. “If you want it to heal even better, try trading with Territory Seven for scar-reduction and skin-repair medicine.”
Skin-repair medicine? She actually had some—her Idol had made her a batch that worked wonders for body injuries. “Li Jie, how long till Alpha’s leg heals?”
Chang Li disinfected her hands. “This is a high-level evolution wolf. If it avoids heavy activity, five to seven days should do it. Regaining muscle strength will take at least a month, but how well it recovers—I can’t say yet.”
“It’ll definitely make a full recovery,” Xia Qing said with confidence. Once the wounds on the surface healed, she could use her expensive medicine—the results were nothing short of amazing.
Watching Xia Qing lovingly pet the brown-gray she-wolf, Chang Li felt the urge to join in. But she didn’t dare—evolution wolves were smart and carried grudges. “The wolf in your yard—both hind legs broken?”
Xia Qing led Chang Li outside to check the other wolf’s leg. “Yeah, probably broken by a bear.”
Chang Li studied it from a distance and gave her verdict. “I’ll fit it with a professional brace. You’re experienced with wounded wolves, so it should recover in a month.”
Afterward, Chang Li couldn’t hold back a laugh. “Xia Qing, you’re basically the wolf pack’s medic now. I’m the squad’s doctor, but you’re their doctor.”
Xia Qing…
Once Chang Li finished treating the wolf, Xia Qing gave her ten wild walnuts as thanks. Of course, Doctor Wang and Hu Zifeng got some too.
If Yang Jin hadn’t had to hurry off, Xia Qing would have given him some, too.
