Chapter 478: Huo Zhun, Not Much of a Reader

“Boss, I knew you were the best.” After praising Old Goat, Xia Qing pulled out some jerky from the fridge and set it on the floor. “Er, you’re still recovering, so stay home and rest. If you get hungry before I get back, just munch on the jerky to tide you over.”

Er Gou gave his tail a little wag when he saw the food.

Securing the oxygen tank to her back, Xia Qing lifted the sterilized and dried protective dog suit, holding it up in front of Alpha. She spoke seriously, “Your Majesty, I need you and Broken Back, along with Huge Wolf, to go on a mission with me. You heard it yesterday, the enemies we fought in those mountains—two of their companions escaped. We need to go catch them.”

Alpha turned away, showing Xia Qing his side.

“Thank you, Your Majesty.” Xia Qing’s hands shook as she put the protective suit and shoes on Alpha. Then Old Goat hoisted her onto his back and they hurried toward the Northern Gate.

They’d barely arrived when Huo Zhun showed up outside the iron mesh wall—three minutes early.

Noticing Xia Qing’s team, Huo Zhun asked, “Xia Qing, two wolves and a sheep?”

“Three wolves. The other two aren’t here yet.” Xia Qing had Old Goat set her down, then she sat amidst drifting Devastation Snow, gently negotiating with Alpha. “Your Majesty, can you call over Broken Back and Huge Wolf?”

Before Alpha could give any command, Huo Zhun suddenly leaped aside. Two evolved wolves raced in from Section Three of Hill Forty-Nine, landing right where Huo Zhun had been. One took guard over Xia Qing and Old Goat, the other fixed its gaze on Huo Zhun, ready to strike.

Looking at the massive wolf facing him, Huo Zhun finally understood why one of the wolves had earned the nickname ‘Huge Wolf.’

Who would’ve thought Xia Qing’s squad would have a giant evolved wolf among them? That was… unreal.

Huo Zhun, with his limited vocabulary, simply couldn’t find the words to describe how shocked he felt.

So long as Alpha didn’t move, the Wolf Pack kept Huo Zhun safe from harm.

Xia Qing took the bag out of Broken Back’s mouth and retrieved his protective suit. She briefly went over the mission details again, using plenty of gestures, then pulled out a fist-sized, double-sided stainless steel shatterproof compact mirror and opened it for Broken Back to see.

“Handsome Wolf, what do you think of this mirror? Help me catch those two enemies—the ones who hurt us yesterday—and it’s yours.”

Xia Qing had noticed a while ago that Broken Back liked looking at his reflection. She’d planned to use the mirror to trade for his Yi Stone, but today it made great bait.

Broken Back’s eyes lit up. He marched right to Xia Qing, letting her hurry to dress him in the protective suit, then tucked the mirror into his suit’s pocket.

    Wow… damn!!!

Right now, the only way Huo Zhun—a man of few words—could express his utter shock was with some choice curse words.

An evolved male wolf that could understand human speech—seriously—liked to check himself out in the mirror?!

On the first day of Devastation Snow in the tenth year since the Cataclysm, 8:35 a.m.—the first disaster elimination team had fully assembled.

Captain Yang Jin led twenty-eight speed evolvers, each above level five. One of them lugged Section Nine’s lord, Li Si, as they trekked through the trampled valley between Hill Forty-Nine and Hill Fifty, heading for the third peak of Hill Fifty.

By 8:45 a.m., the third disaster elimination team—two people, three wolves—was fully kitted up and set out from the north gate of Section Three, bound for Mountain 51 southeast of Hill Fifty to hunt down the escapees.

In a snowstorm with dangerously high Devastation Element levels, the usual human-enhanced senses—sight, hearing, smell—were useless for tracking the fugitives. Only evolved dogs or wolves could sniff out their trail.

But there were no evolved military dogs in this territory, so Commander Zhang San had no choice but to send the Wolf Pack. The only way to get the evolved wolves to cooperate was for Xia Qing to lead, which was why Zhang San had to send her, even though she was in a weakened state.

Three evolved wolves led the way, while Huo Zhun—a level five jolt-powered, level seven strength evolver riding high on an Evolution Element stim shake—carried Xia Qing at full speed behind them.

Alpha was a speed evolver. Broken Back had jumping evolution. From the look of things, Huge Wolf was a speed evolver too.

    Chapter Summary

Xia Qing organizes her team—Old Goat, Er Gou, Alpha, Broken Back, and Huge Wolf—to hunt down escaped enemies from a previous battle. Huo Zhun arrives early, shocked by the might and quirks of the evolved wolves. Thanks to a mirror bribe, Broken Back eagerly joins. Two anti-disaster squads mobilize: Yang Jin leads speed evolvers to Hill Fifty, while Xia Qing leads her wolves and Huo Zhun toward Mountain 51. With human senses failing in dangerous snow, only the wolves’ abilities can track the fugitives. Their perilous hunt for the escapees is about to begin.
