Chapter 480: No Time to Pass Out

    “Got it. Understood.”

After hanging up on Yang Jin, Xia Qing got a definite answer from her Idol and immediately relayed the battle plan to Huo Zhun over the walkie-talkie.

Then Xia Qing strapped the fugitive’s empty backpack onto Alpha’s back, pointed at the path they’d come from, and gave a string of careful instructions. “Queen, you and Huo, run along the route we took—lead the helicopter toward our Territory. Queen, be extra careful out there…”

She hadn’t even finished when Alpha shook the snow off and shot away to the northwest faster than Xia Qing could believe.

In the blink of an eye Alpha had vanished from her sight.

Swallowing down the rest of her words, Xia Qing asked Crippled Wolf to bury the fugitive’s backpack in the pit it had dug, then struggled to lift her aching arm and pointed ahead. “Handsome Wolf, you and Huge Wolf—hurry, get me under those rocks over there. This spot’s about to be blown sky-high.”

Crippled Wolf was just about to step out when Xia Qing yanked him back by the pocket on his protective suit. The move hurt like hell, but Xia Qing insisted, “Broken Back, don’t go out. We’ll crawl under the rocks.”

The ledge of rock barely cleared a meter high. Crippled Wolf could manage underneath while Handsome Huge Wolf had to flatten himself and crawl to keep up.

Xia Qing lay across Handsome Huge Wolf’s back, the sharp rock edges scraping her, but this kind of pain barely registered for her now.

The helicopter roared up right above their heads. The spot where they’d just been hiding was shredded by heavy machine gun fire—projectiles snapped the rocks and sent debris crashing down, filling the air with snow and dust.

Both Evolved Wolves snarled low and deep. Xia Qing wrapped an arm around each wolf’s neck, holding them back with every bit of strength she had, her voice trembling as she soothed them quietly.

“As long as we stay put, the helicopter won’t spot us. Don’t move… It’ll leave soon, I promise.”

Their stone shelter took a hail of bullets, shattering the rock. Fragments crashed onto Xia Qing but she kept her grip on the wolves, whispering, “Don’t move, don’t make a sound—it’s fine, it’s all right.”

The helicopter unleashed another wild barrage but, finding no moving target, veered off toward the northwest, chasing after the Evolved who’d leaped away with the fugitive, and the Evolved Wolves running with the backpack.

Even though the immediate threat seemed gone, Xia Qing kept the wolves beneath the slab, just as a fresh burst of gunfire rattled past—the sound of bullets striking stone was painfully shrill.

Pinned by the rocks, Xia Qing started chatting with the wolves to pass the time.

“Handsome Wolf, we’ve got some beautiful pearls back home. When we get back, I’ll make a pearl chain for your mirror—you can hang it on the wall of the Den. Do you still want that gold chain? You can trade your Yi Stone for it.”

“Huge Wolf, I noticed you really like that quilt at home. It’s yours—bring it back to Wolf Mountain and use it as a bed.”

“Any ideas what Queen likes? Do you guys know?”

Either wolf could have easily slipped from Xia Qing’s grasp, but neither moved. They just lay quietly under the rocks, listening to her ramble.

Twenty minutes later, a thunderous explosion ripped through the northwest, followed by a chain of blasts.

Xin Yu had finished the job—how brilliant!

“Huo, Queen, you two okay out there?”

Parched and out of breath, Xia Qing tried the walkie-talkie. Maybe Huo and Queen were moving too fast and out of range, or maybe her walkie-talkie got smashed in the chaos. Either way, no answer came.

Five minutes later, both Evolved Wolves tensed up again, teeth bared. Xia Qing hugged their necks, listening intently for any sign from outside.

    “Buzz.”

Her phone started vibrating in the pocket of her protective suit, but with the rocks still pressing down she couldn’t reach it.

    “Xia Qing.”

For the first time ever, Xia Qing realized just how magnetic and comforting Yang Jin’s voice was.

“Handsome Wolf, Huge Wolf, let’s head out—my teammate’s here.”

Crippled Wolf and Handsome Huge Wolf crawled forward a few paces, shook off the rubble and dirt, and rose to their feet.

Xia Qing forced herself to lift her dizzy head and saw, not far away, Yang Jin standing tall and heroic in his stunning Special Protective Suit.
