Chapter Index

All the lords, whether new or old, had phones. With a local network about to go online in this area, they’d be using their phones to contact each other much more often. Xia Qing decided to ask Da Ya for help setting their allies’ phones to anti-eavesdropping mode.

After the Inspection Team left, Xia Qing spent over an hour tending Devastation Grass in the greenhouse. Suddenly, the phone in her pocket started chirping with that familiar “beep beep beep.”

Judging by the rhythm, Xia Qing didn’t even need to check—it had to be Crippled Wolf, who was oddly obsessed with the Door. When any other wolf wanted into her territory they hopped the iron mesh wall with the Alpha. Only Crippled Wolf actually used the Door. Over and over. Every visit.

Old Goat bolted outside first. When Xia Qing put away her hoe and followed, she found Old Goat already strutting in front of the pack, head held high, proudly showing off a brand new coat.

As soon as Xia Qing appeared, Lame Wolf darted over, hopping and bouncing all around her in a frenzy. Fierce Lame Wolf sister and Black Wolf bared their teeth playfully at Xia Qing. Meanwhile, Crippled Wolf eyed Old Goat’s outfit with thoughtful curiosity, and the Alpha simply waited for Xia Qing to approach.

Xia Qing ruffled Lame Wolf’s head hard and greeted the group. “Your Majesty, Crippled Wolf, you made it so fast—I… oh crap!”

She hadn’t even finished getting the stink off herself and her house when a pair of round ears and a tiny head poked out from behind the Alpha, making her jump back several steps. “Ba—Balding Weasel?! Your Majesty, what’s the Bal—Balding One doing here too?”

Seeing it here honestly scared the life out of Xia Qing.

She’d made new clothes for every Evolved Wolf—except for this Evolved Weasel. Would it get mad and let loose that nasty stench all over her yard?

If a toxic Evolved Weasel got angry, the smell would linger for half a month. In just five days, she was due for special training. Xia Qing couldn’t help but wonder if Yan Long had scheduled it after five days on purpose—maybe wanting the last traces of stink gone before training started.

But if she got another thick dose of that stink today, would Yan Long still let her join? Xia Qing had been looking forward to this training for ages.

The Alpha ignored Xia Qing and walked straight back home. Balding Weasel, legs trembling, followed right behind. Only then did Xia Qing notice that hidden near the bushes behind Alpha, Crippled Wolf and Black Wolf were seven wild chickens, some with gorgeous feathers and some quite ordinary!

Xia Qing turned curiously to Crippled Wolf, the only one not following the pack. “Crippled Wolf, are those wild chickens a gift for me?”

Crippled Wolf, still studying the Door, looked over thoughtfully at Xia Qing.

Suddenly it clicked for Xia Qing. “So you want Balding Weasel to pluck all the chickens first, then I roast them up for Her Majesty?”

Crippled Wolf finally flashed a smile, showing off its snowy white and adorably pointy fangs.

Xia Qing looked up and let out a silent groan. She was honestly starting to suspect these wolves could count—why else would six wolves bring over seven chickens?

Old Goat only ate grass, never chicken, so the spare bird might really be intended for Xia Qing. Would Balding Weasel be joining the meal too?

Er Gou rubbed against Xia Qing’s leg and grinned up at her.

Instantly, Xia Qing’s heart melted. She patted Er Gou’s head and spoke softly, “Er, you managed to bring Her Majesty and the others over so quickly. You’re amazing! You’re getting so much better. Once we’ve cleaned these chickens, I’ll make chicken breast for you, all right?”

Er Gou, who loved chicken breast and veggie porridge, beamed even brighter.

With an armful of heavy chickens, Xia Qing made her way home with Er Gou trailing behind. Back in the yard, she found the Lame Wolf siblings playing dress-up with Old Goat, while Black Wolf lounged beneath the eaves watching the fun.

And what about Her Majesty and Crippled Wolf, who’d just come running back?

No need to ask—they’d definitely gone inside.

Balding Weasel? Xia Qing didn’t dare speculate. The truth might just be too much for her to handle.

She opened the door. There, Alpha and Crippled Wolf were already stretching out by the fireplace on brand new straw mats, feet freshly washed.

Brand new mats? It figured—Crippled Wolf must’ve fetched those from the Tool Shed himself. Xia Qing tiptoed around checking for any sign of Balding Weasel, and only relaxed when she found none and could finally deposit the chickens in the yard.

Sure enough, her instincts were spot-on. Moments after she set them down, Balding Weasel appeared and the feather-plucking chaos exploded in the yard.

Xia Qing checked over the chickens, picked out the only two Green Lanterns, and carried them inside. She plopped them in a basin, poured boiling water over them, and started plucking feathers too.

Er Gou scampered off to play with the Lame Wolf siblings. Crippled Wolf parked himself at the kitchen door to watch Xia Qing work. For a split second, she felt a weird kinship with Balding Weasel—both busy plucking chickens under watchful, judging eyes.

With hot water helping and her hands far bigger than the weasel’s, Xia Qing soon had her two chickens cleaned down to smooth white skin.

Seeing she’d finished so fast, Crippled Wolf trotted out to bring her two more, dropping them by the basin.

Xia Qing was about to wash her hands…

Crippled Wolf, thanks a lot, but I honestly don’t want to compete with a weasel over chores. Balding Weasel probably got ‘paid’ for helping the pack; if Xia Qing took over, who’d get the reward?

When Balding Weasel saw there was nothing left to do, it zipped away. Crippled Wolf brought over the last poorly plucked, scruffy chicken, also dropping it by Xia Qing’s basin.

Life isn’t easy, Xia Qing sighed.

“Crippled Wolf, since when did you wolves get this picky?”

Crippled Wolf just stared blankly, eyes full of thought.

Xia Qing chuckled, holding up the cleaned chicken, waving it as she spoke, “Should I clean up these chickens and stuff them in the Living Room fireplace to roast before we eat?”

Crippled Wolf sprang into action, running to the fireplace in the Living Room, turning back to Xia Qing with an adorably pleased grin.

    “Alright, got it.”

Xia Qing gutted all seven chickens and put the innards in Crippled Wolf’s old food bowl, setting it outside. She didn’t even need to call—the Alpha left the fireplace and came out for food.

After the Alpha ate for a while, he left, and Crippled Wolf moved in for a few bites. Next up was Lame Wolf sister, then finally Lame Wolf. Black Wolf didn’t get a turn—Lame Wolf had licked the bowl clean.

Why did Lame Wolf sister get fed ahead of Lame Wolf this time? Xia Qing was a little curious.

Once the roasting rack’s hook was adjusted, Xia Qing hung up all seven chickens to roast carefully. Then she went upstairs to the Storage Room and grabbed snake-skin protective suits for the five wolves, followed by a damp cloth from the first-floor bathroom. “Your Majesty, let me wipe your mouth and help you change into your new clothes?”

There was no skipping this step. The pack had just feasted on innards—their mouths were filthy.

Alpha turned his head away, silently declining. Crippled Wolf eagerly trotted over to Xia Qing instead.

Didn’t matter who dressed first. Xia Qing swiftly wiped Crippled Wolf’s mouth clean, zipped him into the suit, and solemnly praised, “Handsome Wolf, you look dashing in your new gear! Next time you brawl with a bear or python, there’s no way you’ll lose any fur.”

After flatteringly dressing Crippled Wolf, Xia Qing tried bargaining, “Handsome Wolf, want to see yourself in a full-length mirror?”
