Chapter Index

The synthetic toxin in Luo Pei was snake venom, targeting the internal organs; the toxin in Dazhi came from a plant and attacked the skin’s surface. While the two types aren’t identical, one main antidote ingredient is definitely Devastationweed.

The Devastationweed in her territory had already gone to seed. If all went well, Xia Qing could cultivate even more this year.

Kuang Qingwei quickly spoke up after Xia Qing. “Brother Yue, send me a copy, too. I know a few people who dabble in medicinal herbs—maybe they can’t solve it, but the more eyes we have, the more hope there is.”

Today’s Alliance meeting finally settled the personnel who’d guard Bear Cave, lifting a huge burden from Xia Qing’s shoulders.

Now Yue Haiying would be guarding the hidden valley within Bear Cave, while Yuan Yan and Madam Shi would keep a distant eye on the cultivated Dao seedlings and Green Light Sweet Potato seedlings inside. Xia Qing no longer needed to split her focus.

From here on, she could focus her main energy inside the territory, dedicating herself to spring planting and building her strength.

On her way back, Xia Qing passed through the territory with a spring in her step, only to spot Tan Junjie leading his team in measuring the Northern Barrier. They were using lime to mark where Section One’s iron mesh wall would go, and setting up the temporary site for storing building materials.

According to Xin Yu’s plan, the 4.5-meter-high wall would be built along the entire perimeter of Section One, north, south, east, and west, topped with a high-voltage pulsed perimeter alarm. Any person or animal touching the iron mesh would trigger a massive electric current, stopping creatures from scaling or breaking the wall.

To power this alarm system, they’d need a robust generator. Chonglian Group would supply the entire system and hand it over to the Inspection Team after debugging.

Section One’s iron mesh walls had four gates—one on each side. The Northern Gate sat at the north edge of Xia Qing’s Section Three. Control over this gate’s surveillance wasn’t with the Inspection Team but, at least in name, with Xin Yu—though the truth was, it belonged to Xia Qing.

Keeping this gate was all about making things easier for the Wolf Pack to come and go.

Of course, knowing Alpha’s pride, a pair of iron mesh walls was just a set of hurdles. There was no way he’d obediently use the gate.

Pretty soon, the only ones using this gate regularly would probably be Broken Back and Er Gou. Imagining Broken Back having to squeeze through two gates to enter her territory brought a grin to Xia Qing’s face.

When Yue Haiying finally sent over the last three missing medicinal herbs, Xia Qing realized that Idol had already provided two of them earlier for the Wolf Pack to find.

So it seemed that only two out of these three herbs could be found in or near Wolf Pack territory.

Xia Qing had shown Broken Back countless videos and pictures of the herbs, but lately the wolf was busy caring for Alpha and the wolf pups—no time left for foraging. The ever-helpful and reward-shunning Handsome Huge Wolf had gone to support the Western Perimeter and was out of reach. As for Er Gou, his strength hadn’t fully returned; he couldn’t leave the base either.

If she wanted to find the herbs quickly…

Xia Qing opened her phone, pulling up a camera feed to check on things inside the Sheep Shed.

Inside the cardboard box, the Albino Weasel stood on all fours, sheltering its babies beneath it and watching the outside warily. Clearly, her presence as a human made it feel threatened. The balding one was nowhere to be seen—probably out hunting for food.

Watching the snowy little creature on-screen, Xia Qing couldn’t help but get starry-eyed. The same species as the Yellow Weasel, but this albino one was just absurdly cute.

She really wanted to pet it…

Next to the cardboard box, Er Gou stuck his head inside to sniff at the Albino Weasel. The weasel, reassured, slowly relaxed.

At the moment, Er Gou was the guardian for both the albino mother and her pups. This didn’t surprise Xia Qing at all—after all, they were all part of the Wolf Pack. Protecting the young came with the territory.

Since Er Gou could keep the Albino Weasel calm, everything else would be easy.

Xia Qing grabbed a basket and headed to the greenhouse. She pulled a small snake from the snake box, pinched off some alfalfa and spinach, picked up a Green Lantern Egg, and then, once home, added wheat bran to some vegetable leaves and a Yellow Lantern Pumpkin. She mixed it all with egg wash, topped it with the little snake, and brought it to the Sheep Shed. Her voice was gentle as she called, “Er, is White Weasel awake yet?”

She had to stay quiet. If the Albino Weasel felt threatened and let loose its stink, it’d be a nightmare.

Er Gou looked at Xia Qing with trusting, relaxed eyes.

“Awake? I made White Weasel some food. Er, carry it in for them.” Xia Qing didn’t go into the Sheep Shed, but let Er Gou handle the delivery.

Er Gou obediently trotted over, grabbed the metal dish by the rim, and carefully brought it inside.

This was nothing new for him.

Once she was sure none of the food had spilled, Xia Qing returned to the house and pulled up her phone to check the Sheep Shed camera feed.

Er Gou set the food by the box and then gently carried the Albino Weasel out, placing it next to the bowl.

Still on edge, the Albino Weasel hesitated for half a minute before finally sniffing at the food and starting to eat. The little one hadn’t had anything since last night and was starving.

To Xia Qing’s surprise, the Albino Weasel went straight for the pumpkin bits covered in egg, finished them, lapped up all the egg wash, then moved on to the snake meat.

It looked like this little snowball wasn’t a fan of alfalfa or spinach.

Zooming in, Xia Qing checked the box and found the weasel pups. The three that had died before were gone, but the five survivors all had full bellies and were shakily searching for their mother.

She rewound the camera to look for how the dead pups had been handled.

While Xia Qing was at the meeting, the balding Yellow Weasel—its anesthesia wearing off—had shuffled over to the Albino Weasel and licked her fur. Then, the balding one clumsily dragged a dead pup from the corner of the box, hauling it outside.

Switching to the yard camera, Xia Qing watched as the balding Yellow Weasel buried the dead pup in the ruined lot in front of her house.

After the third trip burying the last of the dead pups, the balding Yellow Weasel had some water and went back inside to keep caring for the Albino Weasel.

Once the Albino Weasel had fully recovered from the anesthesia and started licking her babies, the balding one slipped out of the box, looking like it was heading out to hunt.

All in all, the balding Yellow Weasel made for a very responsible partner and dad.

    “Beep.”

Xia Qing heard the camera’s alarm in the yard—and saw the dirt-caked balding Yellow Weasel trotting back carrying a field frog.

Field frogs are actually tiger-spotted frogs. These creatures hibernate, so with spring only just here, the weasel must’ve worked hard to dig it up from the thawing ditch.

Without missing a beat, the balding Yellow Weasel carried the frog right into the Sheep Shed and dropped it next to the Albino Weasel.

Despite nursing her young, the Albino Weasel sprang up and started eating, while the balding one began grooming itself, sitting in the box.

There was something inexplicably heartwarming about the scene.

    Chapter Summary

In this chapter, Xia Qing and her allies work to obtain medicinal herbs needed for antidotes, settle security plans for the territory, and fortify defenses. Inside the Sheep Shed, Xia Qing observes the touching dynamic among Er Gou, the Albino Weasel, the balding Yellow Weasel, and their pups through surveillance—highlighting nurturing instincts and the little dramas of their daily lives.
