Chapter 835: The Wolves Claim the Battlefield
by xennovel“Sister Qing, Er Yong, Ding Hao, Zhang Hongda and I will reach the target in ten minutes. The helicopter from Territory Seven is already in the air.” Jing Kuan, a Level 5 Speed Evolver from Hu Zifeng’s Squad, cranked his speed to the max as a barrage of explosions echoed around him, calling out to Xia Qing on the walkie-talkie.
Right after another shell exploded, Xin Yu responded immediately: “This is Xin Yu! Xia Qing is being chased by their sniper and grenadier. Requesting air—”
“Awoooo——”
A long, commanding wolf howl pierced the air. Xin Yu changed her tone at once. “The wolf pack is here to back us up! Forget air support—don’t attack, and watch out for the wolves.”
“Copy.” Hearing the wolves had arrived, Jing Kuan’s nerves eased just a bit, but he kept pressing his team forward at top speed.
This area belonged to the Northern Wolf Pack. Although the pack leaders who liked to wander into Section Three didn’t care much for him or Er Yong, they knew both were friends of Xia Qing. Attacking them would go against the pack’s way.
The wolf howls mixed with the roar of artillery, but neither Tang Huai nor Zhu Li—the auditory evolvers inside Territory One—picked them up. Over in Section Three, though, Wolfdog Number Two was feeding fish when he suddenly stood up, kicked off the ground, and soared over the fish pond toward the Buffer Forest.
“Baa—!” Old Goat, who was lying under a tree and ruminating, jumped in fright and called out to his companions.
But Er didn’t answer. He dashed through the Buffer Forest, sailed over two iron mesh walls, and charged into the Evolved Forest.
“Baaaaaa—”
Old Goat’s bleat was full of alarm. Chen Cheng, standing guard in Section Three, felt even more unsettled.
“Awoo—oooo—”
On Hill Fifty-Three, the Alpha stood tall atop the peak, lifting his head for a long, furious howl.
“Not good, we’ve riled up the wolf pack! Fall back! Helicopter, get rea—”
The enemy sniper perched in the tree never finished his warning—a split second later, Crippled Wolf leaped up and sank his jaws into the sniper’s gun hand, while an Evolved Wolf tackled the grenadier targeting Xia Qing.
Xia Qing ducked another shell, raised her gun, and was about to fire back—when her eyes widened in shock.
A huge, fearless gray wolf had clamped down on the enemy grenadier’s throat!
Xia Qing instantly swung her aim to where the sniper was—but only caught a fleeting glimpse of a familiar figure disappearing through the trees. The grenadier was down, and Crippled Wolf was chasing the sniper!
Looking up, Xia Qing spotted the Alpha standing tall on the mountain peak, his howl echoing in the sky. Her blood roared with excitement.
Her allies—the strongest force in the Northern Evolved Forest—had come to her aid!
The shelling stopped. The Queen stood regal on the mountaintop, howling for all to hear. What did that mean?
It meant the wolves had taken control of the battleground.
If Xia Qing knew anything about the Alpha, king of the Northern Evolved Forest, it was this: he wouldn’t hesitate to order the death of any enemy fighting Xia Qing.
“Your Majesty!”
With that shout, Xia Qing raced with everything she had toward Xin Yu’s hiding place. Because Xin Yu, who was holed up with the Evolved Bear, would almost certainly be seen as a foe by the wolves!
“Awoooo—” Xia Qing howled as she ran.
Her howl caught everyone off guard—the Alpha leading the pack on the mountain, Crippled Wolf mid-sprint, the huge gray wolf standing over the grenadier, and all the other wolves surrounding the helicopter and Xin Yu froze for a beat.
Feeling the killing intent of the four beasts rushing toward her suddenly weaken, Xin Yu finally let out a relieved breath—still not realizing the Evolved Bear beside her was twitching its paws, its eyelids flickering as the eyeballs moved beneath.
After that wild howl, Xia Qing pressed the walkie-talkie. “Xin Yu, the wolf pack has secured the field. Tell the backup squad to stand by. Let the Territory Seven chopper hit the enemy helicopter and don’t land to extract the bear until I give the all-clear—do NOT get into a conflict with the wolves.”
“Copy that,” Xin Yu replied, raising her voice.
“Copy.” Jing Kuan’s voice came right through the walkie-talkie—no need for Xin Yu to repeat the message. “The wolves stopped us but there was no fight.”
“Copy.” At the controls of the helicopter, Huo Zhun gunned the engine toward the enemy bird. On the co-pilot seat, Yan Long kept his eyes glued to the radar, pressing the button on the walkie-talkie. “Six wolves are clustered around the enemy helicopter.”
Dashing up to the boulders sheltering Xin Yu and the Evolved Bear, Xia Qing stepped between the rocks and the two wolves lurking just meters away, quickly identifying them. “Scarface, and you there—thanks for coming with Her Majesty to help me. I’m fine. The human inside is my ally, not an enemy.”
The two wolves bared their fangs at Xia Qing, radiating menace and fury. She couldn’t hear the growls, but knew from their faces how angry they were.
After all, there wasn’t just a human scent in that cave—there was also the Evolved Bear’s. Bears and wolves from the Northern Evolved Forest were mortal enemies.
As Xia Qing wondered if another howl might help, both fierce Evolved Wolves suddenly pulled back their fangs and stepped away.
Now that was unexpected…
Spinning around, Xia Qing glanced up—and sure enough, the Alpha who’d stood atop the mountain moments ago now stared down at her from the rock behind.
Xia Qing finally exhaled in relief. Looking up at the Alpha, she gently gestured in sign—her hearing was still shot, but she had no problem talking with the wolves. “Your Majesty, the human inside is my companion. The bear is sick and can’t move, so there’s no threat.”
After just a few seconds of eye contact, Xia Qing got the message. “Please wait, Your Majesty. I’ll get them out for you.”
She ducked into the gap between the boulders. “Xin Yu, stow the grenades and bring the monkey out to stand by me. Don’t worry, the wolves won’t hurt you.”
“Okay,” Xin Yu called back, flashing an OK sign at Xia Qing.
Lifting the brown bear, Xia Qing walked out with Xin Yu, setting the bear before the Alpha. Xin Yu quickly placed the monkey next to the bear as well.
Xia Qing explained with gestures, “This brown bear and the monkey are both sick.”
Why not say they were attacked by humans? Xia Qing thought. After all, she was human herself.
The Alpha stared at the humans standing between the rocks and the wolves.
Xin Yu let her hands drop to her sides, trying to look relaxed and show she meant no harm. To her surprise, this made the Alpha’s hostility surge. She scrambled to hide her emotions and calm down.
Losing interest in Xin Yu, the Alpha turned his attention to the bear.
With her ears still buzzing, Xia Qing nudged the prone bear with her foot and kept briefing the Alpha. “Please look, Your Majesty, the bear really is sick.”
The Alpha lowered his head to sniff the bear. As Xin Yu sensed her partner tense up, she was shocked to feel the bear’s aura grow stronger too.
It was awake now—and nervous as well. Xin Yu wanted to update Xia Qing, but the latter couldn’t hear a thing.
The Alpha sniffed the bear, then the monkey. Snarling, he flashed his fangs and killing intent spiked. Xin Yu winced at a sudden headache, but just as quickly, the Alpha’s hostility faded.
Seeing the Alpha relax his snarl and swivel his ears north, Xia Qing turned and quietly asked Xin Yu, “Did you hear anything just now?”
