Chapter Index

Old Goat and Flathead were in the middle of a brawl when both spun around at the exact same moment, startled by a sudden noise from inside the iron mesh wall. There, a human shot up with a scream, flailed their arms high in the air, then dropped just as quickly.

As the human hurtled downward, Er—who’d been on lookout for Old Goat at the edge of Section Three—jumped high and soared right over the iron mesh wall.

    “Ahhhh—”

    “Bang!”

Unable to hold back, Xia Qing had sent Tang Huai flying with one solid kick. Without hesitating, she grabbed him by his protective suit and pinned him against the iron mesh wall.

Wolfdog Number Two landed to Xia Qing’s east, bristling with hostility and blocked two humans who rushed over, weapons in hand.

Tang Huai, still reeling and cringing in pain, quickly waved his hand to tell the two bodyguards to fall back. With a desperate look, he stared at Xia Qing, eyes pleading as she almost seemed ready to finish him off. He fought to save himself:

“Don’t be mad! I just said it wrong! What I meant was—the little monkey’s freshly washed face is about the same shade as yours, and honestly, you look a lot better than you did when you first got here last year! Really!”

Xia Qing, face completely expressionless, released her grip.

The second his feet hit the ground, Tang Huai bolted. He moved even faster than a rabbit—not because he was scared Xia Qing would kill him, but because he was terrified Wolfdog Number Two would bite him or Old Goat would tackle him then stomp him a few more times.

Swiping her face at the northern gate scanner, Old Goat and Wolfdog Number Two gave chase after Tang Huai. Today, Old Goat was determined to teach a lesson to the human who interrupted their fight and dared upset her little brother!

Xia Qing planted a foot on Flathead, who’d snuck in behind Old Goat, then tossed him out the northern gate. “Hey, Er!”

Hearing Xia Qing call out, Er leapt back and intercepted Old Goat, turning her around and bringing her back.

Once Tang Huai and his two bodyguards had run off, Xia Qing ignored Flathead’s attempts to gnaw on the iron mesh. She first thanked her two companions for having her back, then gestured while consulting Er: “Er, run over to Hill Fifty-Five and bring back Queen, Broken Back, and Big Wolf. Tonight, it’s bath time for everyone!”

In front of her own kind, Xia Qing had always stayed cool and reserved over the years. That sudden burst of anger just now? All Tang Huai’s fault—his words stung, his laugh was like nails on a chalkboard. But most of all, what he said made Xia Qing suddenly understand why every time Broken Back Wolf saw Monkey, he’d grin at her!

Screw it. Even if she couldn’t pummel Broken Back Wolf to death tonight, she was definitely going to shave it bald!

Er circled around Xia Qing once, swiped his face at the gate scanner, and dashed off toward Hill Fifty-Five.

“Old Goat, thank you for sticking up for me. Next time you see Tang Huai, don’t hold back—give him a real beating! How about rations mixed with sweet potato leaves for dinner tonight?”

“Baa~~~” Old Goat bleated happily, giving up on going outside to keep brawling with Flathead, and instead trotted after Xia Qing back toward the territory.

After making sure Old Goat and Wolfdog Number Two weren’t following, Tang Huai glared, “Who told you two to tag along? What could possibly happen beside Section Three? You’re just here making things worse!”

One of the bodyguards Director Tang sent to protect Tang Huai couldn’t help but ask, “Young Master Tang, that evolved wolf…”

Tang Huai’s expression darkened. He slowly lifted his eyelids, eyes icy.

The bodyguard, still rattled from the evolved wolf’s sudden appearance, was stunned by Tang Huai’s cold sternness. He’d never expected Tang Huai to have this side.

“Transcribe the work regulations twenty times when we get back. No food till it’s finished. Do this again and you’re fired.”

    “Yes, sir.”

Inside Section Three, Xia Qing plucked Monkey out of its cage, then checked her face on her phone and let out a furious huff.

    Tang Huai, you half-blind idiot!

Broken Back Wolf hadn’t arrived yet, but the Red Fox family—always looking for free medicine—showed up first.

Xia Qing had long since stopped bothering to reason with them. She quickly pinned down the now even fluffier and rounder Red Three-Fur, dabbed them with the same bug-repellent powder she used for Old Goat and Er, then sent them off.

    “Wait…what…”

Up on Hill Forty-Nine, Er Yong stared wide-eyed at the monitor as a flash of the wolf pack passed by. He turned to Xiao Jiang, “That’s a lot of wolves. Should we report to Sister Qing?”

Little Five, who’d just finished a meal and was grooming his fur, jumped onto the table and blinked his big, round eyes at the surveillance feed.

Xiao Jiang shook his head. “Didn’t you see Queen and Broken Back Wolf leading the group?”

After dinner, Xia Qing had her knife sharpened and ready. Soon enough she heard rhythmic beeps from the northern gate.

A short while later, Alpha led Handsome Huge Wolf, Lame Wolf, and Er into Xia Qing’s yard. As Xia Qing stepped outside, she noticed Gray Giant Wolf had settled on the ruins to the south of her house, while Black Wolf appeared right on her rooftop.

With such a huge crowd of wolves, Xia Qing couldn’t help but get a little nervous. “Queen, Big Wolf, why did you bring so many over? Are you picking another fight?”

Handsome Huge Wolf padded to the eaves, the farthest point from Xia Qing, and crouched down to rest.

Lame Wolf ran over and pawed at Xia Qing’s clothes, looking for snacks.

Xia Qing handed him a chunk of freeze-dried meat to get him out of the way, then brought over a bag of jerky for Handsome Huge Wolf in the corner. When she turned, she found Alpha had already wiped his paws and walked right inside.

Xia Qing wiped the water droplets off Er’s back and head, then took him inside, where she found Alpha standing right beside Old Goat, soaking in the breeze.

Old Goat pedaled the generator bike, churning up clouds of sheep wool, looking proud as ever.

“Queen, where’s Broken Back? Why didn’t he come? I already sharpened my knife.”

Before Alpha could respond, Xia Qing heard a wolf step onto her concrete doorstep, nudge open the screen door, and start wiping its paws.

    It’s here!

With Monkey in one hand and scissors in the other, Xia Qing stormed over to stand in front of the security door, ready for a showdown with Broken Back Wolf.

Alpha glanced at Xia Qing, then tipped his head back, catching the breeze again.

    “Creak—”

After the faint sound of the doorknob turning, the front door swung open. Broken Back Wolf appeared, accompanied by a smaller wolf with flashy golden eyes and standing about twenty centimeters shorter.

Xia Qing’s fury instantly melted into a rush of pink bubbles. She set down Monkey and the scissors and hurried over, her voice oozing with sweetness. “Broken Back, is this your pup with Queen?”

No wonder the wolf pack rolled in so deep tonight—it was because the little wolf finally came out, and needed the pack’s protection.

    “Woof—”

The tall, skinny wolf pup bared its teeth and growled low, refusing to let this human—who hadn’t visited to steal rocks in ages—get anywhere near.

Broken Back Wolf licked the pup’s head. The little one ignored him and kept growling at Xia Qing.

Queen’s pup is so cute! Oh my god!!

Xia Qing instantly whipped out a pack of freeze-dried meat and tore it open on the floor. “Hey sweetie, this is Green Lantern meat. Want to try it?”

The pup only got angrier, scratching at the concrete with its claws, letting out another menacing growl.

Xia Qing tried again. “How about rabbit jerky?”

    Still growling.

    “Or grilled fish?”

“What about these—dried Green Lantern shoots?”

The second Old Goat saw Xia Qing break out the bamboo shoots, she stopped pedaling and trotted over, eager for a snack.

The little wolf immediately backed off and retreated to Handsome Huge Wolf’s side, growling even louder.

Xia Qing handed the dried shoots to Old Goat, then looked to Alpha for help. “Queen, what does your pup like to eat?”
