Chapter 900: The Day of the Wolf’s Medicinal Bath
by xennovelWhen the Handsome Huge Wolf pushed open the little door with his big paw he was greeted by Xia Qing’s enthusiastic welcome. “Handsome Wolf, you’re here! Come in, come in!”
The Handsome Huge Wolf locked his icy-blue eyes on the unusually friendly Xia Qing for a couple of seconds before wisely withdrawing his paw.
Before the auto-closing security door could fully shut, Xia Qing grabbed it. She lifted her head, doing her best to keep calm, and sincerely thanked her lucky mount.
“Handsome Wolf, thank you for taking me to look for other humans yesterday—and for protecting me when the Western Wolf Pack tried to attack. To show my gratitude, I made you a special drink with extra nutrients.”
As soon as she finished, Xia Qing dashed off to the kitchen and whipped up the Handsome Huge Wolf’s favorite beverage using a blend of nutrient source, pure spring water and spinach juice, then brought it right to the bathroom door.
Honey? She only had two jars of honey left. That stuff needed to be rationed.
The Handsome Huge Wolf finished the drink, turned to look at the bath barrel inside the bathroom and made his intentions clear.
He wanted a medicinal bath.
Xia Qing took the basin the wolf had licked clean to the kitchen, gave it a good wash and put it away before coming back out to thank him again, gestures and all.
But the Handsome Huge Wolf didn’t pay her gestures or gratitude any mind—he fixated on the bath barrel instead.
No point reasoning with this wolf when he’s ignoring her like that. Xia Qing walked into the bathroom and started to fill the bath barrel with water.
The moment he heard water running, the Handsome Huge Wolf stepped into the bathroom and settled right into the barrel.
Xia Qing just stared in disbelief.
At least she’d set the water to the right temperature—thank goodness for that.
No, wait. The Handsome Huge Wolf wasn’t stupid. If the water had been too hot there’s no way he’d have jumped in.
So, while Xia Qing kept filling the barrel with water, she patiently explained why today he could have a medicinal bath. She even tried to persuade him to stop being stubborn and carry her around more without complaints.
Once the barrel was full, Xia Qing went to the fridge, took out a packet of blue medicine and poured it into the warm water, mixing it well.
Whatever this medicine might feel like, the Handsome Huge Wolf was already hooked and clearly wouldn’t go wild, so Xia Qing felt safe leaving the bathroom. She grabbed the Monkey off the steps and plopped it back by the basket, nudging it to get back to work. “Finish peeling this sunflower, and you’ll get some spinach juice.”
The Monkey slowly resumed pulling seeds from the sunflower disk while Xia Qing went on working with the radio in the background.
Finally, with peace restored, the Handsome Huge Wolf closed his eyes and even dipped his neck into the herbal bath.
“Luo, are you there?”
Tang Huai’s voice crackled through the walkie-talkie channel.
“Here.” Luo Pei replied curtly.
“I heard that Chen Dongyang’s squad’s Hui Five Sniper, the one killed by an Evolved Wolf, participated in the spring slaughter of Western Wolf Pack pups. Is that true?”
Inside the bathroom, the Handsome Huge Wolf opened his icy-blue eyes, brimming with killing intent.
The Monkey inched toward Xia Qing, frightened. Little Fei Mao, busy picking seeds, darted straight into her pocket. Old Goat kept pedaling his cool bicycle. Er, who’d been lying at Xia Qing’s side, stood up and headed for the bathroom.
The animals’ strong reactions said it all—they sensed the Handsome Huge Wolf’s entire aura had shifted. Once again Xia Qing was reminded just how much this wolf actually understood human speech.
Clearly, the Handsome Huge Wolf’s brain had evolved to a remarkable level. His blank expressions weren’t from stupidity—he just came with a frosty poker face.
Luo Pei answered, “Chen Dongyang’s gang is still under interrogation. I haven’t heard anything definite yet.”
Zhao Ze came online. “I looked at the photos. The way this sniper died is identical to Xue Jinchang. It’s a match.”
Yuan Yan chimed in, “Chen Dongyang colluded with people from other bases to bring Evolved Wolves down on our territory. He deserves worse. This time, we can’t let him walk away.”
Kuang Qingwei found death too easy for them. “Just killing them isn’t enough. They ought to be sentenced to forced labor until they drop.”
Wen Nengjie joined, “Nah, it’s best to just execute him. Chen Dongyang is too cunning, always sweet-talking his way into trouble—if he stays alive, who knows when he’ll escape.”
Tang Huai chimed in with a warning. “Old Wen, mind your language. There are kids in the group.”
“Sorry, sorry,” Wen Nengjie apologized immediately.
Madam Shi cut in, “Thank the Divine Wolf. That’s why the Western Wolf Pack left our turf alone.”
After a round of grateful messages for the Divine Wolf, Tang Huai shared some news. “Hey, did you hear? Sea beasts and raptors are fighting over at Gui San Base. Gui Five Base has called for help. Luo, did you get the mission request?”
Luo Pei responded, “Got it. I’m heading out the day after tomorrow.”
Nobody expected Luo to leave again so soon. Xia Qing felt reluctant to see him go, but at least he’d finally get to fight alongside Yan Long at Gui Five. That was something.
“Luo, you never rest. A whole year and barely a break. It’s because of experts like you guarding our base—and the Inspection Team risking their lives—that farmers like us can work and sleep in peace,” Wen Nengjie said, tugging at the heartstrings a bit. “Just take care out there.”
Zhao Ze asked, “Brother Huai, do you know which sea beast and which raptor are fighting over at Gui San?”
Everyone leaned in to listen.
Luo Pei replied, “It all started when a Giant Raptor on the mountain near Gui San Base preyed on a newborn Evolved Great White Shark pup. The big shark rallied a whole bunch of sea beasts. Not sure what all’s involved yet.”
“Damn!” Tang Huai exclaimed. “A sky king against a sea king—now that’s a show.”
Wen Nengjie voiced the question Xia Qing was dying to ask. “Luo, if it’s just two evolved beasts fighting inside Gui San, why is Gui Five so nervous?”
Luo Pei replied, “The evolved sea beasts are working together to try to topple the seaside cliff occupied by the Giant Raptor. If that cliff collapses into the sea, Gui Five faces the risk of flooding.”
So Gui Five was in real danger? Everyone on the Lords’ channel went silent.
Shi Du suddenly asked, “Aren’t sharks fish? Don’t fish lay eggs? How could a great white shark give birth to a pup?”
Everyone fell silent.
Tang Huai snarked, “You’ll have to ask your class leader about that. Tan Qi, you there?”
Tan Qi was currently studying in Section One of the North, where she was class leader.
Jiang Ying from Territory Fifteen pressed the button. “Tan Qi hasn’t finished her homework. She’s not online.”
Zhu Li, busy cramming for junior high graduation exams like Shi Du, answered, “I just looked it up! Turns out, great white sharks are fish, but they’re ovoviviparous.”
Shi Du asked, “Sis Li, what’s the difference between ovoviviparous and viviparous?”
Zhu Li replied, “Still looking it up. Huo, do you know?”
Zhu Li and Shi Du, both originally planning to take the graduation test next year, decided to do it this year. Huo Lei had also signed his son up.
So Huo Zhun, barely retired and hoping for a break, had to hit the books hard.
As a member of Yan Long’s special forces, Huo Zhun had fought sea beasts plenty of times, but this topic stumped him. “If it was a multiple-choice question, I’d probably get it right.”
Everybody else went silent again.
From Territory Eleven, Huo Lei barked, “You go turn off your walkie-talkie and study right this instant! And if you flunk that test—just wait and see!”
Knowing that answer or having a graduation certificate didn’t really affect his fighting strength…
A frustrated Huo Zhun didn’t dare argue, just curled up and mumbled, “Dad, let me hear the answer, then I’ll go study.”
