Chapter 113: No One Can Sleep
by xennovel“Good night Jiang Qin.”
In the silent night Feng Nanshu’s delicate face was illuminated by her phone screen.
She was lying on her stomach with her left arm across the pillow chin resting on her arm right hand holding the phone quietly looking at Jiang Qin’s avatar. It was an ugly four-eyed dog the kind with black fur but with two tufts of yellow eyebrow-like fur on its head.
Its eyes were fierce as if saying “Let’s go for a walk!”
Feng Nanshu put down the phone burying her face in the pillow then flipped over staring blankly at the white wall as if her soul had left her body.
But before she could space out for long the phone screen beside her suddenly lit up. Opening it she saw the fierce four-eyed dog had sent a message.
“Picking you up for the team building tomorrow 7am sharp. Don’t be late.”
“I don’t have a boss lady ID.” Feng Nanshu picked up the phone and typed.
“That is a problem. Since this is a team building activity wearing work cards and name tags sets the atmosphere so anyone without them tomorrow is not allowed on the bus.”
After reading Feng Nanshu was silent for a moment her fair jade-like fingers hovering over the keyboard about to reply when Jiang Qin’s next message popped up.
“But you can choose not to take the bus and ride shotgun with me instead.”
“Jiang Qin you’re truly a great person.”
After reading Feng Nanshu’s message Jiang Qin lay in bed unable to sleep staring fixedly at the ceiling in a daze. A while later he sat up leaning his back against the wall continuing to space out. Glancing over he discovered Cao Guangyu across from him was in the exact same state and had been maintaining it for a long time.
Jiang Qin felt his scalp go numb. “Why aren’t you asleep yet? Not making a sound you gave me a fright.”
Cao Guangyu glanced at him and muttered “You’re not asleep either?”
“We have the team building tomorrow. I’m just a bit excited.” Jiang Qin pulled the blanket up wrapping it around himself. “Brother Cao why are you up? Do tell.”
“I’m contemplating life. My thoughts are a bit deep so it’s hard to fall asleep.”
“Set your sights on some girl again?”
Cao Guangyu suddenly moved adjusting to a more comfortable position. “I can tell you but only the two of us can know. You can’t tell anyone else. If you agree then swear an oath.”
“Enough with the nonsense. If you’re not going to say it I’m going to sleep. Doesn’t seem like you can come up with anything profound anyway.” Jiang Qin launched a provocation.
“Hey hey wait don’t. I’ll say it I’ll say it right now.”
Jiang Qin knew this guy couldn’t hold back. “Go on I’ll reluctantly stay awake to listen.”
“Old Jiang what do you think liking someone feels like? Are there specific signs? Also how do you know if a girl likes you or not?”
Jiang Qin was instantly stunned into silence by this question. “You’ve been sitting there half the night pondering this? Something’s up?”
“I’ve never been in a relationship. I’m a bit unclear.” Cao Guangyu started pouring his heart out.
“Then what was that bull you spouted at the start of the semester about having five girlfriends?”
“We weren’t close back then. I had to embellish a bit. What if I was the only one who had never dated? Too embarrassing.”
Jiang Qin snorted. “Not having dated isn’t embarrassing. Pretending you have is embarrassing.”
“Okay I’ll tell the truth. I may have fallen for a girl now.” Cao Guangyu suddenly spoke his eyes burning a little.
Jiang Qin wasn’t too surprised. “Normal. You fall in love with every girl you see get infatuated then lose interest.”
“I’m serious this time. Haven’t you noticed I’ve been leaving early and returning late recently? Actually I’ve been meeting up with her the whole time. But I don’t know why I’ve become very cautious.”
Hearing this Jiang Qin got a bit more interested. “Which department is she in? How’d you meet?”
“We’re discussing life philosophies right now. Don’t change the subject. I’m asking you Old Jiang how do you determine if you like someone or not?” Cao Guangyu threw the question back at Jiang Qin.
“Heh you’re purely asking a bald man how to maintain his hair.”
Just then a creak came from the bed next to Cao Guangyu. Zhou Chao sat up. “Liking someone is wanting to see them wanting to make them happy wanting to stick together. It’s a distracted yearning a reckless impulse a heartfelt joy.”
“Why aren’t you asleep?” Jiang Qin found it hard to believe.
Zhou Chao also sat up. “Come on how can anyone our age fall asleep at this hour?”
Cao Guangyu waved his hand indicating he didn’t care. “Doesn’t matter as long as that asshole Ren Ziqiang is asleep. This matter is between heaven earth me and you guys. Absolutely cannot let a fourth person know.”
“Okay.”
“Fine.”
“No problem.”
As their voices fell everyone looked at the southwest corner in disbelief. Ren Ziqiang had also sat up a smile on his face. That “no problem” just now was shouted by him.
Seeing him get up Cao Guangyu’s face turned green. “Fuck why aren’t you asleep either? If even you know then the whole school will know.”
After hearing this Jiang Qin waved his hand. “What are you afraid of him for? He chased after Pan Xiu for a month only to end up as sworn siblings. Won’t we laugh at him for life? You’re still afraid of him mocking you?”
“…”
Ren Ziqiang turned and lay back down thinking he might as well sleep himself to death.
Cao Guangyu felt Jiang Qin made sense so he let go of his worries. “I think she’s quite nice. Other than a bit of a temper she has no other flaws. What do you guys think should I pursue her?”
“If you have the courage to like someone then go for it. Don’t wait until you lose that courage to regret it. Also you must recognize the right person. A good girl will help you grow. A bad girl will only make you sink.” Jiang Qin gave a fair suggestion.
Zhou Chao couldn’t help scooting forward. “Old Cao is it someone in our class?”
“No. Even if I say you won’t know her. Go to sleep!” Cao Guangyu lay flat in a hurry.
Jiang Qin looked at Zhou Chao. “What did you say liking someone felt like just now?”
“Liking someone is wanting to see them wanting to make them happy wanting to stick together. It’s a distracted yearning a reckless impulse a heartfelt joy.”
Jiang Qin was silent for a while. “Where did you hear that answer from? So weird.”
“I was just reading a novel under the covers. Happened to see that line. And since you guys were discussing it I blurted it out.”
“A web novel? I thought it was real for a moment almost resonated with it. Web novels have no substance just hoodwinking people. Read less of them in the future.”
Jiang Qin pulled the blanket over himself about to close his eyes and sleep when his phone beside him suddenly lit up. Opening it he saw it was a QQ message from Guo Zihang.
“Bro Jiang I heard a milk tea shop at our school is being transferred. Do you want to take a look?”
“Speak of the devil. Where is it? It’s not at the small plaza by the male dorms right?” Jiang Qin was already a pro at using his physical keyboard.
Guo Zihang also replied instantly. “Right under the female dorm building.”
“Then I’ll go take a look early tomorrow morning. Wait for me at the school gate at 7:30. Don’t come too early. I may need to pick someone up.”
